Parrots and many other wild animals that are sold as pets are often not bred in captivity. Instead, they are captured and smuggled out of the wild. I read about this in _The Encyclopedia Of Animals: Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians_ (ⓒ1993) by Dr. Harold G. Cogger et al. (consultant editors).
