This family is hitting the road and doing it in style! They have converted a simple school bus into an unbelievably comfortable home. The entire bus is designed to be off-the-gird giving them perfect freedom to roam wherever they choose.

I've built two conversions in my life time of 60 years and this episode is almost 5 years old now and this conversion is still by far one of if not the best conversion I've seen well done. You absolutely can see the vision and great care in details that went into this home something you could live in that wouldn't grow old as some converts don't consider in the build. I would hope that this husband and wife team would consider building bus conversions in the future they would do great at it. The video never grows old. Well done.

@Sweetbeariesart
@Sweetbeariesart 6 років тому
I see benefits to kids growing up in smaller places. I live in a small apartment in a complex with other apartments that only range up to two bedrooms. This means most kids living here share bedrooms, and they actually go outside and play in the complex park for hours. I think the same would be true with a tiny house, it would encourage kids to get outside and explore more. If a family is living in a large house where everyone has their own rooms, then a lot of kids just end up playing on their computers and watching shows. People interact when there is a smaller shared space more as well. I think there are certain social skills and team building skills that a small space can teach a child that living in a large secluded environment will not provide. A lot of teens are in shock when they go to the dorms to college because they have never had to share space with others.
@Sweetbeariesart
@Sweetbeariesart 6 років тому
Well in Southern California housing prices are sky high, so you are lucky your parents can afford for you to have your own bedrooms and be home schooled. Most kids do not have these advantages. I think it is probably better for siblings of different genders to have their own bedrooms, but sisters and brothers sharing a bedroom was very common up until recent times. If a family lives in a tiny house they all learn to share the common space. If gives you certain people management skills some do not who are lucky enough to always have their own room and space.
@Sweetbeariesart
@Sweetbeariesart 6 років тому
Okay, I get what you are saying. I reread your comment. I do not think kids of the same gender should share a bedroom, but I do not see the problem with brothers sharing a room with brothers, or a sister sharing the room with her sisters. I shared a room with my sisters growing up and that was just the way things were back then. We learned to get along and respect our own spaces. However, I went to school, so if you are home schooled sharing a room that might be stifling. Maybe your parents can enroll you in some private classes or lessons outside of the house so you can have some time away.
@Law19157
@Law19157 6 років тому
Of course, they built it themselves. Intentionally built mobile homes factor in the labor cost to build the product in the final sale price of the Vehicles so it cost more. Its always going to be cheaper if you do it yourself assuming you know what you are doing.

yan ma Yes, insurance. We have tornadoes in Oklahoma, east coast has hurricanes, west coast is known for earthquakes, etc..., I'm pretty sure this is not covered under regular auto insurance. I don't see it qualifying under regular home owners ins. Maybe mobile home ins., even if it is covered under mobile home. Constantly traveling then under what state would one file for the insured policy? Would the ins. cover all the bus upgrades? Ins. rates vary depending upon your geological status. Surely this couple would insure the $30K+ bus investment. I would!

Okay, this is DEFINITELY my favorite house. I wasn't too fond of bus conversions at first because all the one's I've seen kept the bus' shell intact, so it didn't really feel like a /home/ to me personally. What an incredible job they did on this bus! So unique and so comfortable. I imagine one option they will have as the child grows older would be to let her have their bed and then Luke and Rachel can move to sleeping on the convertible couch. They could even swap that couch out for one that may be even more comfortable as a bed. If privacy becomes a concern they can install thin tracks on the ceiling that a curtain can be attached to pull around the bed at night. Once again... GREAT JOB LUKE and RACHEL! Raising the roof as you did was brilliant and makes all the difference. I'm sure you will inspire others to do the same. Have an adventure filled and safe summer traveling!

I always had wanderlust because I grew up in one house basically. My husband's family moved him around constantly and he rarely spent one grade in the same town. We followed my wanderlust and our kids lived in many houses and we went from Midwest to Pacific Northwest. I think 'in the end' there is something you maybe gain by different experiences, but your children may not feel like they ever had a real home and real roots. I kind of wish we had stayed on the beautiful property we had originally and satisfied my wanderlust with vacations. I'm not sure we're without regrets for giving up everything to try out living close to the ocean. We've made full circle but our kids are stuck in other places. I think both of our sons feel a bit of loss because of that, but they both are beautiful in spirit and devoted to us and for that we can't help but be so grateful!

At the beginning he goes on about how the American dream is go on a road trip around the US. Well i did with my kids. We went every summer for 6 weeks camping. All I had was a minivan and a campstove. A decent tent and a cook stove. Some years we would take cots. I love to camp. We drove all over the US including all the way to Nova Scotia. I no desire to live constantly on the road but really really enjoyed our summer travels. When the girls were in high school, we traveled all over Europe camping and staying in hostels. So many good memories. Just open up your door and go. It's not really all that hard or expensive.

@AP-rj8wl
@AP-rj8wl 6 років тому
It's amazing -Adults who take the time to socialize with their kids are happier and more fulfilled. And kids who learn to socialize with adults are more mature and respectful so it's a win all the way around. Also, just because you don't see it in a 10 minute video clip, it doesn't mean it's not so... places that they travel to may have opportunity to be around other kids with like minded people. People and things are adaptable - they may decide later on to move the kids sleeping area to the other end of the bus. They will make it work, it may not be conventional, but it will work for them. 😀

My son has eight children who are all home schooled. I am so glad they did. Everyone I know who had home schooled has the best children. I met a lady in a large sailboat one day when I worked on a river. She rowed over to the office to ask about grocery stores in the area. She said her husband and her traveled all over the world with their three children and home schooled them. They are now Dr's and one is a lawyer. Home schooled children learn easier, have higher IQ's and never have to deal with the public or private school bullies. I have seen that they are close knit families. Your home is awsome.keep it in the family. Your daughter may want to raise her family one day in it.

I had a friend whose father was constantly moving them around South Africa for his work. She used to tell me she loved constant changes and she’s sort of that extrovert where she could easily meet anyone because of her experience. But she told me one thing that really stuck to my mind until these days and it was her struggle keeping in touch with people. Because she was so used to packing her bags and just left, she had problems making sure she could be loyal to long-distance friendships. Another thing was that she would always need to move her furnitures in her bedroom around because she got bored very easily of stagnant place. If you realized, I used past tense and that’s because I have no idea where she is now. Whenever I texted her, she would reply back weeks later. Keeping in touch with her was quite difficult. But I could only guess she’s been busy with her life. I suppose when you grow up with parents who constantly move, you mature on a different level but lacks that social interaction that most kids would have enjoyed at early age. I think at some points, all parents who decided to do this should also consider their children’s developments - which I am pretty sure they already did and they already had it all planned. After all, parents always want the best for their kids ❤️

She also had a similar problem, so it's a huge deal for her to be able to stay in touch with a few friends from high school and college. Also she's the only child, so you can imagine how lonely it could get.

We don't really know where they'll end up though so they may decide in a year of two to stop travelling. Who knows.
