Facts and data alone won’t inspire people to take action in the fight against global warming. So what will?
This is the sixth episode of Climate Lab, a six-part series produced by the University of California in partnership with Vox. Hosted by Emmy-nominated conservation scientist Dr. M. Sanjayan, the videos explore the surprising elements of our lives that contribute to climate change and the groundbreaking work being done to fight back. Featuring conversations with experts, scientists, thought leaders and activists, the series takes what can seem like an overwhelming problem and breaks it down into manageable parts: from clean energy to food waste, religion to smartphones. Sanjayan is an alum of UC Santa Cruz and a Visiting Researcher at UCLA. Taking action on global warming doesn’t stop here.

Not scared - it's a choice to bluster due to lack of proof that can be easily demonstrated. The computer calculations still fall under G.I.G.O. Garbage In = Garbage Out....but they make a somewhat baffling production if you don't pay attention that proof is so impossible that disproof is claimed to be needed. Nope. Guesstimating is still noise.

Kris Silveira - I think this is a claim particularly from religious Conservatives and much of it emanates from groups like Fox News who try to purposely incite anger in this population. Such groups seek to drive a deeper wedge by taking talking points, marrying them into political positions and then telling people that "this other side" is against you, is elitist, thinks you are stupid and is trying to take away your rights and persecute you. Hence, the message to religious Conservatives becomes, "Those evil, lying liberals & science believers are against God and His followers. They are trying to force their agenda on you and bully you into making this country an atheist nation. But as God's people, we must stand against them and their evil ways!" So the morality of the issue had changed in Christian circles from "stewardship of God's creation" to "standing against non-believers who want to take away our civil liberties." Climate change is rolled into that that mess and has been hard to de-tangle with certain faith communities. As such, even the mention of a hot button issue puts hackles up, erects barriers and draws lines of combat. People have been told that they are under attack, so they are already on the defense. What doesn't help is when those who adhere to the sciences become snarky, contemptuous and project superior attitudes. It feeds right into that narrative of persecution and attack by "elitists," confirming their feelings of persecution and attack. And the divide further deepens. I have watched this interaction for years between the two groups and it deeply saddens me, especially because we don't have time to bicker and argue about it. Climate change doesn't stall while we play tug of war. Hope this helps provide some understanding behind that claim of "bullying." All the best to you.

Lol no stupid is not to question so called "experts". To except so called "expert's" views based on assumptions would be a religious act. To except science without question is wrong and pure laziness. How many experiments have you done to prove humans are the cause of climate change? Do you know how many things play a factor in the weather? Do you know anything about polar shifts? Do you know how solar flares effect weather? Are you able to bring the moon closer to the earth? Do you know how the moon effects weather? Do you know how many active volcanoes are in the Oceans around the world? Do you know the effect of underwater volcanoes increase land mass and elevated Ocean waters? Have you read studies on the longevity of co2 in the atmosphere? Dis you know this exact sale this was suppose to happen in 1922 according to scientist's? Did you know of the 1816 freeze known as the year of no summer? Did you know co2 only takes up .04 percent or less of the earth's atmosphere? Do you know how accurate C02 measurements are? Do you know the difference between carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide? Do you know which of those gases are naturally occurring? Do you know how or if any of these gases traps heat? Do you known which scientists agree on which gases trap the most heat or which scents don't think they trap heat at all? Do you know the temperatures in the year 10 b.c.? Do you know the temperatures in the Viking era? Do you know how many volcanoes erupted within the past 50 years? Do you know anything about cloud seeding history? Do you know anything about government weather projects around the world? Do you know what a plasma cloud is? Do you know how many times Niagara Falls had frozen over completely and what years? Do you know how many animals roamed the earth in 1500's ? Do you know what gases humans and animals produce? What kind of gases do sea animals and creatures produce? Do you know how many holes are in all layers of atmospheres? Do you know how holes in atmospheres are measured? Do you kmow the effect of planes gasses and weather? Do you know how many satellites are around the earth? Do you know the effect they have on earth's weather? Do you know how many nuclear weapons have been tested in earth's atmosphere? Do you know there effects on weather? Do you know how radio frequencies are being used to change weather? Do you know how sound plays in weather? Or do you just believe what you political party trolls you at face value? In the realm of science does it make a difference how many agree? Should science be based on assumptions? Do you know anything about Henry's Law? Are you aware that NASA , NOAA, and other government projects need funding? Do you realize money is the motivator for the push of regulations and control? Do you know what happens when more freedoms are taken away? Do you believe with the amount of regulations today in the United States that the Wright Brothers would have ever developed the plane? Did you know the reason why United States is in so much trouble is due to 4 things. Marxist law's, Bank's providing loans or any loans, 2 tax laws (land tax and payroll tax), the push to devalue moral values? Did you know the The United States Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Federalist Paper's , the Anti- federalist papers, the book mentioned in 1st article of Constitution , and the book Mentioned in Declaration of Independence were meant for all American citizens to study so we could not be decieved? Did you know we have a type government or had a type of government named Republic or the Constitutional Republic? Do you know the difference between the Constitutional Republic and a democracy ? Did you know that as more regulations of force that are placed the less freedom, liberty, pursuit of happiness, and less choices people have? Do you know communism, totalitarianism, socialism, fascism, support a form of slavery? Are you against slavery? Are you against government servitude? Are you against freedom? Stupid people do not question but do as they are told without question. Stupid people allow Hollywood, media, and science to dictate how they should think. You will conform and you will obey as some many other puppets like you. Women by nature find comfort in socialism and communism for 2 reasons 1st they don't have to stay in shape or be healthy 2nd they don't have to work on family relationship and a 3rd could be fear of men. These subjects questioned relate in many ways the main way is control. The control over people just like the master's of the cotton fields controlling the slaves in 1800's wether they be white or black master's in those years. So very is the the real topic as is world government. Natural human rights are being taken away due to fear. Slavery in Africa has never stopped. Slavery in the form of sex trafficking and government servitude still exists. United States has less freedom than it had in 1911. Fear rules this land and creates new laws to comfort the fearful. Lastly nobody is saying to trash the environment or abuse environment. What people are saying is question and don't take away my freedom. I would challenge you to question how the oil companies became so powerful to begin with and start your research before the "Great Depression". How great would it have been if people were able to fuel vehicles via home created alcohol? How has government effected farm land? How has government effected metal companies? Capitalism doesn't exist if Marxist law's are placed to stop the function of capitalism. Innovation is not what it could be due to Marxists. There is no more of the great inventors they have all been shut out due to fear of having to struggle or to do the difficult actions. When a society prospers it forgets and becomes corrupt. They forget what freedom felt like they forget what it feels like to overcome obstacles. They forget what it feels like to be able to work unified but as individuals. We live in a time when more of what was good is becoming bad and more of what was bad is becoming good. Pride is increasing as is greed, and hate. 3 things I have noticed in last few decades. Less people practicing heartfelt charity depending more on government paid programs. More people spending time at work or in front of a screen instead of developing and nurturing healthy relationships. Increased division in the United States due to emotional based laws vs rational law's and lack of desire to want to truly understand.

Naija What does that have to do with the underlying problem? You have scientist that worked for decades with research spanning centuries on climate change yet the society only accepts knowledge when it comes from the mouth of religious figures (who live their lives based on the intelligence and scriptures of societies thousands of years in the past). This doesn't just apply to climate change but a host of other scientific fields where scientist for years have been trying to warn society with data and reason and the bulk of society doesn't take action until a religious leader sitting in a palace with a disco stick and pompus queen hat says it's important now and we should care because.....Jesus.
@DeshaunIsAmazing
@DeshaunIsAmazing 7 років тому
Naija In other words, we shouldn't wonder why our society has problems when scientist have researched and developed solutions for our actions, yet the bulk of society wants to ignore it until their favorite religious influencer says it's okay.
@Candyrock15
@Candyrock15 7 років тому
DeshaunIsAmazing //shrug There is certainly no denying that scientists have performed years of research and testing to arrive at this conclusion that global warming is a growing threat. And since it is a problem that involves all of us, they understand that the next step is to tell the public. But that is where human psychology comes into play, because the fact of it is that, unless you're already a forward thinking member of the scientific community you likely wounldnt care much if some random Dr Z. Phill (idk random name here) who not much people have heard about anyways came out and tried to persuade you to take action about global warming. Whereas with a world renounced figure like the Pope, or any well known religious figure in fact, there would be a very different result because the Pope has, in a way, a "relationship" already established with 1 billion people, you see? And so it would be easier to want to listen to someone with that influence in your life. And it doesn't have to be a religious figure. Hell, I bet if Beyonce came out about how climate change was a problem, you better believe people would follow her steps. The key point is an influential well known figure. I think what makes scientists so forward thinking is the fact that they really don't care about the credit. Whatever method works in spreading the message of this urgent issue, they'll take. I really don't think this is an issue of religious people being "too blind to care about science". It's simply a matter of psychology. If you trust, like and are familiar with somebody, you are more likely to listen to their word, and that's the psychology that was in effect with the Pope's message.

Delgen1951 - Yes. In the 90's & early 2000's, the idea of "creation care" was the phrase used. Stewardship was a key theme. Sadly, manufacturing & big oil spun a different narrative. As they challenged the science, they lumped it into arguments on evolution and origin of the planet and species. This dismantled a good deal of trust in the scientific community and conservatives began calling climate change "junk science." It's awful what occurred. Thankfully, a number of folks do see through this (as per the video) & positives steps to turn it around are being made.

While there is nothing wrong with the video, I really cringe at the idea that it's scientists' responsibility to entertain people and convince them of the current state of the art science, rather than it is peoples' responsibility to get the wisdom from knowledgeable people, however boring or unpleasant or whatever they might be. "Sorry sir, your facts on the height of this bridge and unsuitable structural integrity of my body are too boring, please step a side and let me do my fun thing".

"I'm also confused as to why people seem to be offended by my enjoyment of a series of videos..." It's part of the notion that everyone that disagrees with them is literally paid to do so (implying that there's somehow a way to get money from YT by making comments). This sort of conspiracy-hungry lunacy is pretty common in the comments on Vox videos. According to various conspiracies I am paid by: Hillary Clinton, The Clinton Foundation, George Soros, the Democratic party - I am an independent - and so on for not liking Trump and for agreeing with climatologists about climate science. There's no way to get through to such blatant conspiracy theorists. I wish there were, but any attempt at a reasoned discourse will simply be met with more slander about how you're paid to work for the 'evil liberal globalist' of the month in order to avoid thinking about anything you have to say.

Taxing energy will not make it cheaper. Water pollution is so ignored that the SourceWatch resource on coal ash piles of radioactive toxic waste by waterways ( from acid rain exhaust stack scrubbers ) is seldom mentioned, as is pollution from CAFOs ( feedlots ) overloading waterways with cow patties. The Nitrogen Cycle is unbalanced with fertilizers loading waterways with toxic algae blooms - causing dead zones in the oceans and lakes. Climate change is coming - it always has. There is just no useful way to know what and how much on a planet where meteorological forecasts break down in a week. Climate forecasts ..... who knows. They don't make any that come due ! That's like the old joke you will know if your faith is real after you are dead....when it's too late to make changes.

That's so true. My parents are farmers in South America and in the past few years, their yield has dropped terribly because the climate has become unpredictable. And yes, I mean climate, not weather: in the past, they knew which seasons to start planting and harvesting, but now they are planting earlier to prevent losses and still losing product. This year they lost around 50% of the production because the spring is too hot :(

As a communications expert communicating on complex policy and scientific issues, I can cite examples when scientists have been and can be effective communicators. I think part of this has to do with creating a strategic narrative and deploying their expertise in a way that is effective with a given audience at the appropriate time. You clearly give a good example of this. I think a lot of this also has to do with the individual scientists. There are some scientists who are exceptionally effective communicators and know how to engage their audiences. Lucy Jones is someone who comes to mind i a great example, and I know that Vox recently featured a video with her explaining earthquakes and geology!

Its about whether the affects are starting to become very, very significant that everyone would believe. If someone feels that global warming affects them in a way that would affect them largely and directly then they would start to care. Thats why the rich dont care cos they have the money to afford anything they want to be sorted out. Such is being human and not Gods. Thats the reason why religious people would start to care what their leaders said.

TBH, I also think one of the major problems is that people've been taught to think of environmentally sustainable policies as economically deleterious; with such things as them being scapegoated as a reason for working class jobs going away and those "ethical consumption" or "sustainable" options that are usually not only crappier/more time consuming than the "polluting" alternative but also more expensive to boot; associating environmental sustainability with austerity. So, I think one of the most vital things we can do is to break the false economy/environment dichotomy and actually have the huevos for once to put the burden on the people at the top of the corporate ladder to pay for/fix it; rather than putting the burden on individuals where they're less likely to be able to help in the grand scheme of things...

Humans are social creatures. We trust the charismatic and we trust the herd that follows them. "if they have that much influence/followers, they must be right" We have a bit more trouble trusting the shy individual no matter how right and what proof he may have because even if he showed us the proof we wouldn't understand it. In this scenario, critical thinking is a double edged sword. We measure the success and the trustworthiness by either the following, the money or the convenience. Intelligence is, in the mind of the masses, what must have caused that, but one look at trump and you can easily deny it

All this stems from a miscommunication among advocates of climate change and people dubbed "deniers". Instead of assuming a position of contempt both sides should really sit down and work out the disagreements.

So, be careful you don't confuse lack of adherence with ignorance. a lot of folks on the right don't necessarily doubt the science but really do not like the proposed solutions. An alternative approach is market driven solutions, kind if like how Tesla came from essentially nowhere to dominate the perception of EVs and make them "cool". Tesla's impact on the industry will be huge beyond their own car sales. They weren't driven by mandates, although the subsidies helped those subsidies are actually pretty cheap compared to a lot of other "solutions"

ever since humans started developing cities and dense population areas, waste management has always been an integral function. why is this regulation portrayed as so sinister and inconvenient by politicians these days? we are living in a globalized world and technology in transport and communication has shrunk this world many times over, the impact of poor waste management can only get worse on this crowded planet. it shouldn't be so hard to convince "conservatives" what we've always done when it comes to waste, we need to regulate it.

it's honestly sad how true this is. I mean if countless of scientists who put research into their work and know what's going on, people should listen to what they say needs to be done. It's not something to "believe" in. It's fact.

Okay straight up, we don't need to start accounting for people's ignorance by inventing new methods of conveying data. Most of us realised the inherent accessibility of information with the internet, and it's honestly not that difficult to convince yourself about climate change. It's so self evident at this point

Maybe you could make a single video tackling the following questions in sequence, focusing primarily on the last question: 1. Is the planet warming? 2. If the planet is warming, is human activity (like carbon dioxide emissions) causing it? 3. If the planet is warming, and we’re causing it, is that bad overall? 4. If the planet is warming, we’re causing it, and that’s bad, would the policies commonly advocated (e.g., the Kyoto Protocol, legislative restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions) make any difference?

I believe in climate change but I'm starting to get fed up with the fight being taken to the people. I'm not causing significant climate change, my carbon output is nothing compared to corporations. Changing the habits of everyday people will do nothing. You need to change the industries and practices of factories, manufacturers, etc.

Yes, messengers are extremely important to spread awareness about this topic, but I believe that this isn't enough. People will simply keep on living the way they do and perhaps emit slightly less. The main drive to change one's habit is through money in this day and age. If there is a cleaner and more importantly a cheaper way to produce energy, people will hop onto the enviromentmovement train, because it will be benificial for them. And of course Rome wasn't built in a day, but I believe that nothing will help this dilemma except for cheaper and cleaner energy.

It's very hypocritical when somebody that usually does not search any evidences of their beliefs just get skeptical about climate change. It's something good to see people questioning about everything, not just what they thinks is wrong. It's also arrogance the fact that people just see the problem from their sides, go search about this, trying to understand something is crucial for a debate. Climate change is something that affects everybody, and it's something that should have more attention.
