Tiny House Giant Journey

John, 75, is no stranger to building tiny homes, house trucks, expedition vehicles and DIY campers. In fact, he has designed and built twelve mobile alternative dwellings in the last 35 years!

Originally from Minnesota, John retired from the construction industry at 45 years old. With his wife and two kids, he decided to pursue a nomadic lifestyle. The family has traveled all over the world in John’s homemade RVs, homeschooling and adventuring. Instead of collecting belongings, John’s family has collected memories, experiences and photographs.
John’s House Truck is built on a Mitsubishi Fuso chassis and took only four weeks to construct. With two water tanks, an outdoor shower, solar panels, propane appliances and ample storage, John and his wife are able to travel to remote locations all over the world. Their most recent adventure lead them through some rugged terrain in South America and the next big trip will take the House Truck to Russia.

These two are some of my heroes. They are so nice and we love to stop by and say hi which we did just recently while bike riding on the spit. They are off on another venture today and we look forward to seeing them when they get back and hearing about their adventures while on the road. This youtube video is a gem. Thanks for sharing John and Linda! And safe travels too! I'll watch for the book.

I had the pleasure of meeting John and Linda in Liard Hot Springs (Yukon) in 2011. We sat and talked for about 2 hours in the spring. Probably the 2 of the most interesting, intelligent and humble people I've had the pleasure to cross paths with. I wish them well on their future travels and hope the bus is still holding up. We were "The Green horns with the Bear bag" :-)

This is your wife's Uncle?? You have got to be kidding!! How cool is that! He seems like an incredibly creative person-what I couldn't really understand was how he can afford to do all this. That wasn't explained too clearly in the video. Are he and his wife photographers, and they sell their photos to support themselves? That was the only thing I could think of as I listened to this interview, but it was never clearly stated.

@JohnSmithGlobeLie
@JohnSmithGlobeLie 7 років тому
Howard Kurtus To a point, I built my own once and there was a certain amount of worry if the mechanics failed (in not a mechanic) and its cost to repair, and spent a lot of money on fuel covering long distances as well as wear and tear on the vehicle. The maintenance on the build is doable myself yes. Sometimes there was the worry of finding somewhere safe and secure to stay overnight. And leaving the vehicle at anytime was a consern as it had all my personal belongings in it. I realise that this may all sound negative, but these concerns and worry did not negate from the great experiences I had. Im just pointing out as it is the same with most things in life there are pros and cons and sometimes I wasn’t totally relaxed and secure as I may have been in a solid bricks and mortar home. I wasn’t so much looking for risk and adventure, just a more free, quiet, and peaceful way of life. But then if its adventure your after the adventure far outweighs the risks.

This is so wonderful! If only. I live in a sort dying mobile home, some places there is nothing but carpet, huge holes in the floors. For Maine we get a lot of sun, it’s a beautiful place, but my landlord is sick and I don’t think he really plans to do anything with it. So I am trying to learn what I can to maybe keep this place livable. Right now a galvanized water pipe between the well pump and the pressure tank has corroded and burst, so we can’t have the water on for very long or we will lose the pump! Wish me luck guys!
