Setup a Raspberry Pi Web Server with Your Own .COM Using Google Domains

In this video I show how to setup a Raspberry Pi web server and how to connect it to your own domain name (.com, .org, etc.). We start be installing Raspbian, then install software updates, and then install Apache, PHP and MySQL. After verifying that the web server is functioning properly, I show how to sign up for a domain name with Google Domains, and how to use their Dynamic DNS service so your domain will work with typical residential internet service providers. We also install TeraTerm and Swish SFTP on the Windows PC in order to interact with the Raspberry Pi over the network.
This video is similar to an earlier video I made around half a year ago, but this new video covers how to setup a domain name and the Dynamic DNS service.
I have a text summary of this video on my web site, so you don't have to try reading the text off of the video:

so no security setup. that's a bad tutorial then. the whole thing is well explained i guess, but showing this without showing security setup is kinda irresponsible.

@Rizzuan Shah you must be mistaken me for someone who will do as you say. in the future you should really be at your best behavior and speak nice to other people, even on the internet. Edit: also i didnt blame him for his effort, i said it was well explained and all. but other than that this is how you make an open backdoor to your home network without the right security setup.

Can't agree. Why is the ssh-window that small? Bigger font, full-size window is the way to do it. This is not readable at all.

Never host website from Home as DDOS are in-order to happen sometime ISP will not allow you to host website. But they main thing is that hosting from home network you don't have a network firewall or firewall for raspberry you will SQL injection and other Virus and your whole local network will be infected. Get a VPS server which will cost you $3-5 per month.

The video is great, I've watched all three in this series. It appears there have been many changes, especially if your using the latest Raspbian Buster Lite where you must create an empty ssh file (without any extension) in the /boot/ directory. There is a newer server/client application which complicated installation. The rest up to creating a Web page and putting that in its new folder is all good, none of that has changed. I'll do the port forwarding tomorrow. I may edit this as I continue, but that's as far as I've got tonight. Right, I did the steps for port forwarding on my router, very straight forward, however I did skip the Google domain creation step as I find for testing, a website called noip is very good, it offers a free domain name (with a preset suffix on a 30 day rolling confirmation sign in), and a DNS updating program for the RPi, making it ideal for testing. You sign up with a email address, password and confirm the email, sign in to that account, create a domain name and choose a suffix. Important note here is that it's not a www prefix in your browser, it's simply chosen-domain dot surfix (eg. Myweb.ddns.net is what may put in your browser). Search 2013/19 pi-as-noip, as of today this gives the best working instructions for download, install, setup and autostart at Pi boot. After this I was able to reboot, ensure the ip program was active, then use the domain name to access my RPi server. This video was a great source to learn from, and I really hope upgrdman revisits this video or just annotate the change in commands that have become obsolete since it was first published.

Just a side note: Users should check their router software before creating the shell script. A lot of routers let you setup the dynDNS in their browser GUI. They will then essentially do what the shell script does but are not bound to time intervals (like the one hour) but can instead update as soon as their IP changes. Though that might be more interesting in places like here in Germany, where the ISPs disconnect private users on a 24h our basis :)
@ClaudioParraGonzalez
@ClaudioParraGonzalez Рік тому
you can do the same in the rpi. just check your public ip as frequently as you want, and as soon as it changes, trigger the wget to google

By far the best tutorial for people like myself who don't regularly use Linux and need reminded on certain commands. I saw that you created a VPN server, but is there any chance of you doing a tutorial on how to create a VPN client that uses a VPN service like PIA? I'd love to be able to route all but a few specific devices (streaming devices or gaming consoles and this web server) to use PIA (this way, anyone can connect to my WiFi and their traffic is encrypted). I have seen a few tutorials doing it via OpenVPN, but none of those tutorials are as easy to follow as yours.

For anyone who may run into this error: If you receive a message saying "connection refused" while trying to connect via Tera Term, all you need to do is add a blank file named "ssh" to your SD card. make sure the ssh file doesn't have any extension. (EX: .txt) After that, plug the SD card back into your Raspberry Pi and try connecting again. This should correct that error.

As of Jan 23 of 2020, This Tutorial still stands up very well. I will say though that most of the packages that were used here are outdated (so if you typed exactly what he typed to download PHP5 or MySQL it will not work) But you can simply search for the updated versions. I will say however that I found that if you just use the BASIC Rasbian desktop (it gives it a GUI and is way easier to set up) it makes this process a lot more simple, LIKE BY A LOT. It also cuts down on how much you have to use a windows computer as you can search, edit files, and have the terminal open, all in a simple userface to understand.

Hi. I've had my Pi running for around two years and never had problems. I'm using an old SD card and it still works great. A basic web server won't be writing to the SD card all that often, and SD cards are supposed to have automatic wear leveling built into them anyway.
@Anjfyi
@Anjfyi 7 років тому
Ah, I see. Thanks for the response. How about if I was running a dynamic website on it like installing mono for asp.net with a database? I'm guessing for static webpages it would be fine since it won't be writing, but wouldn't it be writing for a database? I definitely trust you, but there's a lot of people saying that the newest Raspbian build is killing some SD cards so it might be a new issue. I'm quite newb with Linux so I'm trying to learn to mount my HD so it would write on that instead of the SD instead. Cheers!
@upgrdman
@upgrdman 7 років тому
I'm not sure. If I recall correctly, most databases keep stuff in RAM and flush changes to disk less frequently. If you're worried about it you could store your web site and DB on a USB HDD, but I've never tried that.

Great tutorial. Since you made this, ssh has been disabled by default on raspbian. This is easily turned on if using a screen with the pi. If you are using a 'headless pi', a empty file called 'ssh' needs to be added to the boot partition of the SD card (eg change directory to the boot partition and use the command: 'touch ssh'. you have to manually connect a keyboard and mouse and enable ssh connections on your pi by typing the command "sudo raspi-config", going to "Advanced Options" and then selecting "A4 - SSH and enabling it"
@ColdOverkill

then reboot and you should be good.

Thanks you for a Great Video...!!! Love the fact that you did not edit out all the fault finding. Its all to easy for the viewer to forget how much effort and dedication it takes to make technology work! Ps Love the sound of your keyboard... mx Blues?

If Someone got connection refused when SSH its because all new rasbian update has now SSH disabled by defalut so you have to enable it manually: www.raspberrypi.org/blog/a-security-update-for-raspbian-pixel/ Reasoon why ssh is disabled as defalut its because to prevent Botnet and cyber attacks

To save others time first the login is pi and the password is raspberry Next when you get to the prompt to enter the username you just type gibberish for the user and password the FIRST TIME since your not typing it in the right location once it gives you the "Login Incorrect" error you can type in pi and raspberry and it will work no clue why they do not fix this only took me an hour to find out what the use and password was and then how to get around the glitch of trying to type it in.

I re-read my post to you, and actually it's a great video of how to ".com", but it could still really be updated to include SSL. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the awesome video. But I also have a side note: You spent this much time and energy to make this great tutorial; but WHY not maximizing the terminal at any point?!! You cannot imagine how much difference it makes for people watching it on a portable/mobile device, like I watched it on my tablet! If you ever decide to do another video, it would also be nice to add some more security configurations such as iptables, etc. But all in all, I am grateful for the excellent work you've done. Cheers,

Amazing tutorial, I was struggling when I first using Linux, because the command looks complex to me. Even now I am not an absolute beginner, despite knowing the "man" and "--help" and "info", I still sometimes have to search on internet for a more detailed explanation. I really hope that I could have watched your tutorial eariler to have less pain in my FYP. Many thanks, keep that up, bro, you deserve a lot more subscribers.

Hey nice one man! I followed your video all the way through and finally got a webserver on my raspberry pi 3 that was sitting in my cupboard for ages! The only problem I had was with Swish but downloaded putty and works like a gem! Although it has taken me nearly 2-3 days after frustration from downloading different program's recommended by different territorial videos on you tube I finally made it to the end with yours so just wanna say Thank you and Happy New Year! Excellent Video!! I'm currently studying various programming languages in college, right now I'm taking web designs with HTML, CSS and Javascript and I think having a website to display my works and content to possible employers can really give me a step up on the competition!
