Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

Ah yes, because FX as a network is totaaallly equiped to tackle such complex and culturally loaded series 😂 I mean I dont know the future but speaking from experience I think this shouldve gone to HBO and you guys stay in your lane with teen dramas and cheap action series with 0 susbtance that run for 20 seasons and then split into three so you can drain more money from your viewers.

I've just watched the 2 first episodes and my jaw dropped... The acting, music, enviorment, brutality etc in this series is just mind blowing. It's been a while since a series opened this good, normaly it takes 2-4 episodes before before the series catches you but not Shogun, it grips your soul from min 1. Fantastic series, 10/10!

@@Dark_Kommissar I was in charge of training the background and working with them for the 9+ months so I can’t speak 100% to the story. But I was on set every day and it felt extremely close to accuracy. There may be a few modern embellishments, but our Japanese cast felt it was truly authentic.

We watched the first two episodes and all I can say is that we were left speechless, a cinematic masterpiece in times like these where the cinema industry seems to be going downhill, I've been waiting for something like this for so long. Told my parents today about the show and when my mother heard shogun she went in a different room and came back with the books from more than 35 years ago

To truly understand Shogun and even Japan you need to know about the battle of Sekigahara. The battle lead to the Tokugawa Shogunate which lasted from 1603 to 1868. Sekigahara was one of if not the most defining battle in Japanese history.

One word : MASTERPIECE. It has been years since I saw quality like this, on the big, small, or whatever size screen. Wonderfully acted. It transports you there, and it honours Clavell's work. I can wait to see the rest. And whomever thinks they have a chance at the Emmy's against this...I can oly wish you good luck , because in a just world Shogun would take EVERYTHING!

The book is my favorite in all my life. It was also my father's favorite. James Clavell wrote several excellent books... King Rat. Taipan, Noble House. He also wrote the screenplay for The Great Escape. I look forward to this production of Shogun.

As Japanese, those Japanese lines sounds just like domestic jidaigeki. Beautiful languages. And whole photographs look like Hollywood budgeted Taiga Drama(annual jidaigeki show on NHK) featured Ieyasu and Miura Anjin as protagonists. This is gonna be enormous epic!

I have read the books twice. Love James Clavel novels. Hope that they do Taipan. I loved this new Shogun series. They follow the book very well. I have the Richard Chamberlain series on DVD and I just love this new version of the story. Great job. I will keep watching.

時代考証めちゃくちゃ過ぎるけど小説だからファンタジーとして楽しむべき。ただ、服飾はほぼ完璧だと思う。おそらく初めてしっかりとした服飾がハリウッドで再現されたわ。47浪人とか酷すぎて怒りが湧いてきたからな😂

It’s been a while since I read Shogun (for the umpteenth time) however I don’t remember a powerful female warrior anywhere in it. At least the Shogun isn’t a black trans wheelchair user with a penchant for wearing women’s attire.

@@Un-Wokeexactly. John Blackthorn looks like a total Beta and they keep showing Mariko as this badass physical warrior. Which is not the case- she makes you see the class of samurai as a state of mind as it applies to different people and the greatness they achieve at what they do- be it gardening or fighting. Instead these unimaginative writers literally have her fighting like a Samurai? No Thankyou. She is a badass in her wits and heart as a woman. Sad to take this great book and give it to lazy activist adaptation.

it's really good, even for non weebs. how they depict japan politic and social conflict at that time, how relevant the scenery was drawn, it really brings you to the theme. in just first 2 episode, the escalation jumps rapidly

I've watched the original Shogun miniseries with Richard Chamberlain many, many times. It's a favorite of mine that still stands up well today IMO. It'll be interesting to see what they've done with this new take on it, if they've stayed true to the story or gone another way entirely.

Tadanobu Asano, the actor playing Kashigi Yabushige also played Chinggis Khan in "Mongol", one of the best movies ever made. Excellent actor!

So good! First time I've seen a series with no hints of sci-fi. It gives me vibes of Vikings from history channel but this show is a must to watch. I recommend!

This is such a great book - crazy that it was written by an Australian/Brit who had been a Japanese POW in WW2 for several years.

@@japankasasagi Yup. One of his books is a fictional take of his imprisonment at the Changi POW camp in Singapore. He also was one of the writers for the movie The Great Escape.

Honto! (Hope I used that right.) The book is great, also remarkably fun for all the tension, plotting and tragedy within it. You end up enjoying the company of all the characters in it, including the villains. Clavell's pretty fascinating, he wrote quite a few novels set in Japan. I always found it heartening that despite his terrible experiences as a POW, post-war he was able to reconcile and became deeply fascinated with the Japanese culture. Gives me hope for humanity a bit. The book is well worth reading and doesn't keep you waiting for pay-offs, it's legimitately a page-turner! @@japankasasagi

Just got done with my first playthrough of Ghost of Tsushima that my friend gifted me. I literally put the controller down and started clapping when the credits started to roll. Now this show, that looks incredible. It seems that fate, nay, destiny wants me to stay in the spirit of the samurai.

This is literally one of the best depictions of the Samurai that Hollywood has put together. I pray this show gets the recognition it deserves and succeeds because it has me beyond hyped for it!
