Wow so Ben got double whammied here, he lost due to a one letter technicality and on his first game where someone could and did catch him. Sucks to be him right now but he had a good run.

I know it wasn’t his choice at all, but I felt like it was kind of unfair to put Ben back in just as another champion was reaching five games. Like, I’m sure they had it preplanned the date, but it would have been fairer had he come back against a one time winner. Because all the sudden there was the position of one of the two having to end their winning streak on that episode. Like, I know they were way different seasons but imagine them bringing Ken Jennings back on James Holzauers sixth game or something like that. So, I felt it was unfair to whichever of the two lost. Ben won so he was the lucky one, but since he sort of strangely ended another champion’s run, it seems apropos for his run to end strangely too on the first non runaway and a one-letter off answer.

Mayim is such a robot. Like, maybe take a second to explain that Ben almost got it but that they couldn't accept the spelling instead of just saying "Unfortunately that's NOT correct" like you do every time someone gets FJ wrong.

The one time Ben ends Double Jeopardy not in a runaway is the game he loses! 😭 The one game Mayim notes Ben's 9 runaways is when he doesn't achieve runaway status. 😕

I know this shouldn't be the takeaway, but Mayim's mechanical handling of this excruciating end to an amazing streak demonstrates how unfit she is to host this show.

I hear you. Prior to hosting Jeopardy, one starred in a long-running award-winning sitcom (that was filmed in front of live audience, no less), and the other worked as a software engineer. When you consider how effortlessly they go "off script" while hosting Jeopardy, you would think that it's Ken who is the former sitcom actor with tons of live performance experience.

I think her OCD may have something to do with it? On Celebrity Wheel of Fortune she was kind of all over the place with everything (although still lovely as always). I think she wants to stay professional and calm as host on Jeopardy.

I got this one right but “Much Ado About Nothing” is my favorite Shakespeare play. I watch the Keven Branagh movie at least once a year. I haven’t tried out for Jeopardy because I’m a afraid that my bad spelling would cost me in Final Jeopardy.

Seeing people argue about how he was "robbed" is hurting my brain. Don't argue a ruling if you don't know the rules. Sure he was one letter off, but because it changed the pronunciation it was wrong. And it's not like he misspelled the word either. He wrote what he thought it was (Benedict) and it was not correct.

I was so sad that Ben lost and the game where he doesn't have a runaway, he changed the letter of the title of what would have been the correct response and I was kind of hoping for Ben to keep his run going longer and Ben will be back in the Tournament of Champions in the fall.

My grandmother knows Lynn personally. They worked together on some sort of committee years ago and are still in touch. I found this out just today when I was at Grandma's house and she told me. 🙂

Confusingly worded answer? I was thinking of the characters not the play name. It could be argued that all 3 thought the same only that Romeo and Juliet is also the title.

Jeopardy has rules that have been used for the entire 38 year run of the show. This ruling is absolutely correct for those rules. Learn them before you rip the show for unfair ruling.

This is a tough way for Ben to end his championship reign with this technicality. It seems that the correct spelling and pronunciation must be required to deem a response correct. But we'll see Ben in next season's "Jeopardy!" Tournament of Champions!

The judges need to be consistent when contestants make spelling mistakes during final jeopardy. They penalized Ben but didn’t do it for others in previous shows. If he had said the answer, he would have been considered correct.

The spelling is different from the original work but I think it's an acceptable answer. It's not just a different name that sounds similar. It is a more common variant of the same name with the same origin mentioned in the clue. It obviously refers to the correct character. This is a similar amount of wiggle room that allows the name of the astrological sign, Capricorn, to be accepted as the name of the constellation, Capricornus. (2023-01-23, Astronomy & Geography)

I think the judges were saving money. Ben was ~95% correct and minus spelling, was correct in a way the others were far off... what happened to... we don't correct for spelling? And, yes, they are pronounced the same way.

The word was "Benedick" but he wrote "Benedict" which added an extra sound therefore changing the pronunciation.

Right call. The pronunciation is affected by the misspelling. Seems only people who can’t read disagree with the judges. And to anyone saying they would have accepted “Benedict” if it was spoken, that’s also wrong. The judges review the audio in each response, and they’d dock anyone for the added “T”.

Alas a man whose name is Ben wrote down Benedict vs Benedick. Hmmm. Tod Barnes played Jimmy Stewart’s character’s brother in It’s a Wonderfull Life. Or did he play James Stewart’s character’s brother? Would Todd (vs Tod) Barnes have been accepted on Jeopardy? I once dated a girl named Karen except her name was Karyn. People have cited that the names Benedict and Benedick are completely different names. As Benedick is derived from Benedict I say hogwash. Who is this U.S. President called Jack Kennedy people speak of? We never had a President with the first name Jack. William Taft is William Taft but William Jefferson Clinton is also President Bill Clinton. Would James Carter be accepted by Jeopardy as a U.S. President? Is it Marilyn or Norma Jean? My mom’s name was Margaret. She used to kid that Ann-Margret’s mom was bad at spelling. Candace - Candice. Jeffery - Geoffrey. Tomato - Tomato[e]. You say potato and I say spud. 😀

Not so fun fact: The last time a player was ruled incorrect by one letter was Sadie Goldberger in Megan Wachspress' 4th game, the infamous "Harriett Tubma" answer. Unfortunately this time, I believe the judges made the right call. 😕 Remembering how divisive the infamous "Harriett Tubma" answer was, I'm willing to listen to how or why the judges are wrong. 🙂👍

Yes, they did, but I can understand why Ben may have thought it was "Benedict" and not "Benedick." They do sound similar in dialogue after all. I can imagine if Alex Trebek were still hosting, he'd have said, "If you changed the 'T' to a 'K', you would have been correct."

I think the difference is that Sadie just didn’t have time to finish writing, but obviously was writing the correct answer. But, Ben actually wrote the answer incorrectly. Also, wasn't there debate about Sadie's handwriting? I seem to recall people saying they thought the N was not missing.

This is a stupid ruling. If he had spelled it “Benedic” instead they would have probably accepted it. Benedick and Benedict are effectively the same name and are definitely the same meaning.

that was some bs. the other contestant's misspelled their answers (although wrong), but the host correctly said what they were trying to write, but he messed up one character with the right answer and it was wrong? If he would have said it instead of spelled it, it would have been right....DUMB, so DUMB.

They don't penalize you if you misspell a word _if_ it is _phonetically_ correct. "Benedict" was not phonetically correct, so he was ruled for that reason.

Béatrice et Bénédict (Beatrice and Benedick) is how the names appear when I looked them up. That's a BS way to lose. Why have a question with such nit-picky spelling on Final Jeopardy!
