Set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries, Shardlake is a four-part drama based on the first novel in C.J. Sansom’s internationally popular Tudor murder mystery series. The eerie whodunnit adventure follows lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) and Jack Barack (Anthony Boyle) as they work to uncover the truth behind a horrific murder. The two men are sent out on a mission by the dangerous and all-powerful right-hand man to Henry VIII: Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) - and failure is not an option.
As they race to uncover the mystery, Shardlake and Barack are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order.

Fascinating. A murder mystery involving an abbey/church? Reminds me somewhat of the board game "Secret in the Abbey", albeit that was less grim than this looks to be.

It seems more like a complete rip off from the fantastic book "The Name Of The Rose" by Umberto Echo set in familiar English history and poorly adapted for TV with some truly awful acting. Unfortunately Sean Bean is on particularly bad form in this series I am sorry to say... but that doesn't matter on this particular occasion as there's nobody worthy of note in the entire cast.

Umm why are there black people in this film? It doesn't add to the historical context.. What's next, are they gonna remake Zulu with the tribe headed by a Hispanic man and Michael Caine's character as an Asian man? I have no problem if this movie is set in an alternate history/earth but this is getting stupid. I could maybe see an Arab person theoretically in the actual context due to the expulsion of the moors in Spain in church outfit around the same time in order to fill DEI quota gently but even that is a big stretch. Quite simply no disrespect the use of a black actor in this context throws out believability and is completely absurd. Box office pass for me.....

The movie is set in 16th century Tudor England. There were indeed black people in the Tudor courts in England. Perhaps they may not have had such a high role, but we don't know the role the person is playing. But it is possible for it to be historically accurate.

@@lfcbpro He is playing Abbott Fabian and there is no record of a black man being able to attain such a high position within the Catholic Church in England during this period. We know there were at least 360 black people living in the country around this time period from archival records but its estimated it would have been higher if you included foreign traders and sailors. Something between 2-4 thousand, mostly living in port cities or London out of a population of around 4 million .

@@user-hl1ex6py8l My point was that the original commentator seemed to think there was no black people in England at the time, that it would be a huge stretch of the imagination and not possible. I was merely pointing out that black people were in fact in England, and held roles in the court. So it would not be impossible for one to hold such a role.
