The way they recorded it would've been directly through the input devices used (mainly mics). Microphones are also designed to accept sound coming from a certain direction(s) and block out other sound that comes from a different direction. This would also be a contributing factor but the main reason you don't hear them much is because the mics simply don't pick them up. The performance would have been set up on purpose this way. They could have removed the background audio after but unless there's some amazing program I don't know about (entirely possible), it would be quite hard. The method above would probably be simpler and work better. But I really don't know that much about this stuff so take it with a grain of salt :) Main point: The audience wasn't dead

I am so glad that someone else noticed that, too. He seems to always give a high energy performance but most of this audience seemed unimpressed or bored. Look at some of the facial expressions on other performers who were in the audience. So sad. It did not ruin things for me, though. He is only going to keep getting better. :)
