The family just sits there and doesn't indulge in the conversation - they just wait for the guy to finish his speech so he can give them his money. The family, who are the main characters, have the least dialogue in the film. Unlike the drunk, they don't have the privilege of talking about philosophy, since they need to worry about not starving. The film conveys that these thoughts are pointless and don't help anyone in need nor the person expressing these thoughts.
