could you use sprinters shifters to do the same thing one on each side being smaller and fitted to the tops?

Yes, but they’ll need to be used with levers that support sprint shifters (only rim brake levers).

Keep up the great work Shane! I am installing GRX DI2 here in the UK on a Shand gravel bike and following every step of the way. My cockpit is a little busier with cross levers and a sprint shifter but the principles and lessons learned from your journey with DI2 have been so valuable. ST SLane’s wiring plan was genius too and set me off on the right path 👍👍👍😃

2 sprinters switches are lighter and endlessly cleaner when installed. I find it easier to mount the switch first than route and secure the wire. Sprinters switches would work better with an internally routed bar.

Hi Shane. Was that so necessary? I think it is a bit too bulky and in your face where you put it. Have you considered programming the buttons on the hood tops? I’m not sure if you know, but each button can be programmed for 3 functions: 1) pressing it once. 2) double clicking, and 3) Holding the button down. So you can not only use them to turn pages on your Wahoo/Garmin, but also change your gears. Just sayin’.

Dick Tchairdjian

Hsien Wei Tan in Australia the front and back shifters are swapped. Left is rear, front is on the right. On mine, in Canada, the wire from the down tube went all the way to the Bar end control unit on the right.... and then I pulled a wire from the control unit to the right shifter. Then another wire from the right shifter to the left shifter, leaving one unused port on the left shifter. Also I put a heat shrink tube around the rear brake hose and the Di2 cable which are both going to the down tube together so everything looks nice and tidy. In Australia, to do the same, you need to locate the bar end control unit on the left side. Also if you want to have an empty port on the right shifter, then run a cable from the bar end unit to the left shifter, then run another cable from the left shifter to the right shifter.... very flexible.
Hsien Wei Tan

I have a Canyon Ultimate CF SL Disc Di2 Aero factory fitted with Shimano Ultegra R8070 Hydraulic shift/brake levers, bar end junction and an internal battery installed in the down tube instead of the seat tube. I also have the one-piece integrated stem-handlebar. The issue is that BOTH Di2 ports on the right shift/brake level are used and the only available port is on the left shift/brake lever. I installed the climbing shifter on the right side of the handlebar but ran the wire over to the left shifter/brake lever to the only available port. The wire was stretched but it works. Any idea why Shane's bike has only one port used on the right lever, while mine as both ports occupied?

Hi, I don't know where else to ask so I thought I'd ask here as I'm a subscriber. Do you know if you can fit and have working the front Di2 derailleur only - obviously it would need the brake/ shifter, battery, junction box, cables. Does it actually need a rear derailleur? The reason I ask is that the wife has a problem with her left hand and is having problems pushing the left lever to make the mechanical shift onto the large front ring.

seems like a massive scam... Shimano knows that people will want these and so they can set the price to be anything they like, its just two ordinary buttons and a wire... probably doesn't even cost 5$ to manufacture... It's a really cool thing to have on a bike but it's way too overpriced for what it is...
Shane Miller - GPLama

Overpriced, yes. Scam? No. It does exactly what they say it does. It's up to the consumer/sucker/me to pay the price for that functionality.

Great video as always, I have just installed one of these units myself on a R8050 Ultegra system and I think it's brilliant. The size isn't an issue especially when wearing gloves and it seems to shift quicker than the buttons on the leavers, also fitted the bar end junction box at the same time, really for easier access to charging and use. All di2 cable routed through the bars on my Giant Propel Advance 0 without any trouble, drilled a 6mm hole near each shifter for the wire to pop out and finished off with Shimano 6mm grommets. I am now after a new computer and torn between the Elemnt Bolt and the Garmin 1030, but swaying towards the 1030 as I've always had Garmin without any issues whatsoever. Keep the great videos coming.

Done it! I have spent a happy day learning all the intricacies of the di2 and have now just bought all the bits ;) I bought everything individually as the kits all offered the A box under the stem which looks a bit messy, I’m going for a hidden install at least as much as possible so wanted the in drops unit that you have. I’m a tech anyway so much of this stuff is pretty normal for me. There are still plenty of gotcha’s though, so it did need a lot of care to make sure I got the right bits, the battery in particular nearly caught me out as there is an older non BT compatible one still being sold. One question, can you get di2 battery status on the Bolt? On mine all I can see is the graphic of gears and the actual gear, no mode or battery level, or do they materialise once paired? (It’ll be a couple of weeks before the bits get to me)
Garethev

Shane Miller - GPLama yes that’s exactly what I read, it seems like they used to provide it as a field but may have removed it for some reason. Apparently it will pop up a message when it drops to 20%, so you do get a warning but not a field, not sure why they did this...

Is it only me who thinks this is a complete rip off, $100 for a basic switch! It doesn't even seem very high quality, but maybe that is because they have gone for lightweight over flashy design but then it is held on with cable ties! For that kind of price I would expect a far more streamlined solution. In technology terms you can get a low end smart phone for that kind of money and someone could makes something nicer for $20 with a profit margin included. At this point in time I would expect DI2 to be rolling down, especially considering SRAM has a wireless system that at least in my opinion is far more the future than wires instead of cables, even if the performance is equal.
Shane Miller - GPLama

We can shoot the breeze all day about how overpriced this stuff is, then mention SRAM... which itself is over $1000 more for the groupset. Shane, have you worked out if you can fool the system so it allows you to put it in small ring at the front and small cog at the back? Not really for riding but i always prefer to put the rear wheel on that way and it annoys me that effectively i only have 20 speed! I heard of you tell the system you have 59/29 11/25 it lets you but done that and didnt work.

Dick Tchairdjian
Dick Tchairdjian 2 роки тому
Rhys Leach you could, but there’s probably no more empty slots left on the shifters. You probably have to add another small junction box... bit things are getting a bit too crowded already. Did you know that there is a button under the hood of each shifter that could also be programmed to do whatever one needs. Actually each button has 3 modes. Single click, double click, and click and hold... so the possibilities are endless. Most people use those to change pages on their Garmin/ Wahoo, but you can operate headlights or use them to change gears - front or back.

Great job, and this is the real advantage of electronic shifting, the buttons are customisable setting to how you want it. I have tried a couple of the electronic systems, and was underwhelmed, It didn’t feel like I had something better on the bike that gave it that extra edge (for more money and more weight) so put the mechanical on, and I am happy, all that wiring and firmware stuff is just another complication to me, as I see it, I have enough of that with all the other stuff I have clipped on the bike.

It’s a chunky monkey that’s for sure. There are other options I’ll look into now I’m all-in on this setup. I think it’s inevitable they’ll go wireless one day. The issue is all the independent batteries required. Cables do suck, but one battery for the whole system is pretty neat.

You are right, but you are forgetting it is $100 for a cable and switch, you could make it for $20 with a good profit margin, the fact it is held with cable ties at that price is a bit of a joke, while cable ties are functional, they also often rub on your bike and aren't as good as a softer rubber solution for grip. No one could complain if this was an Aliexpress special for $9.99 with shipping included, but it isn't, that said take the Shimano logo off and you would have fooled me.

@James Vaughan He's already on my back about that crappy junction that the bike shipped with. I'll try score more cables at the TdU this week for Project Stealth.

@Shane Miller - GPLama But at least these are designed for riding up grades! Really interested to see the before/after with SLane. I'm sure, like me, he's being triggered at the sight of those Di2 cables and exposed y-junction (ran mine inside the bar on my last build).

That’s the problem when using handlebars that are ridiculously narrow.

Dan Gurtler agree with that if your shoulder width is correct for the bar width than great.

I use 38 mm too. It works for some, not for others. Nothing ridiculous about using what works...

@Russell Jorden "I have 30+ years of experience in the cycling industry, and I am not an expert", well maybe you are both a bit slow as well as a bit of a d**k. Try adding something useful derived from your 30 years of experience, rather than a totally irrelevant comment, it may make you feel better...

Request. Can you do something for those of us who have say a Shimano 105 groupset, want to go electronic and keep as much of existing kit as they can? In my case I have a Cannondale synapse carbon about year 2016 I think. I just bought a Quark Dzero power meter / crankset, so want to keep that, other than that I'm up for upgrading it to electronic. I am in no way a pro cyclist, I'm doing this for the tech fun more than anything else. I can do the research I know, but I thought that there would be a fair few others interested in this sort of upgrade?

Dan Gurtler thanks that’s what I thought / was hoping, as my frame has quite a complex shape at the point and a mounting point already riveted on.
Dan Gurtler
Dan Gurtler 2 роки тому
@Garethev They are all braise on, but Shimano sells a clamp that the derailleur mounts to if you need a clamp type. I used the Ultegra clamp on the Moots. The Colnago is a "braise on" type, so it is mounted right to the frame.

@Dan GurtlerThanks. After a day's research I'm pretty sure I have what I need nailed now. Yes the A box seems to have two options, one (neater) in the tube and one under the front stem and the B box which appears to be just a parallel wired junction box which is still needed. Unfortunately the front stem version of the A box is the one supplied in all the kits I've seen! The bit that I have mixed answers on is whether the kit front derailleur is 'braise on' or clamp. The Shimano web site appears to state that they are all braise, but the supplier (Wiggle UK) says that its clamp (I'm pretty sure that they are wrong and have emailed to clarify), it takes weeks to get stuff to me and I have a difficult return route so I need to be sure before I buy....

I upgraded a 2007 Moots to Di2 in 2015. The minimum parts required are: front & rear derailleur, both shifter levers, a battery mount, a junction box (not sure if that is still needed), the control box, Di2 cables that are the right length for: 1) shifters to control box (2 of those), 2) control box to junction box 3) battery to junction box, 4) junction box to front derailleur, 5) junction box to rear railroader. That was all externally routed and I did it myself (very easy to do really). There are some shops that sell upgrade kits ready to go--just ensure that you are getting the Di2 cable lengths that you need. Better to have a little too long than too short. The shifters and junction box have some allowance for looping excess cable. But if they are too short, there is nothing to do except order new cables. My newest bike is a Colnago C-RS that has all internal cable routing. The control box fits in the end of the handle bars (same as with Shane's Giant) and the Di2 cables are all hidden except for a short run to the front derailleur and a short run to the rear derailleur. That was the way I bought that bike in 2018. I expect there is still a rear junction box somewhere near the BB.

Awesome video Shane. I have Di2 forever now (it seems that way away LOL). I too have this climbing shifter although for me because I have the first gen of the hydro non series STI and those stupid levers didn't come with any spare plugs, my bike shop had to order in a 5 port junction box (that sits under the stem) so I could use the climbing shifter (I can't use the sprint shifters since they have to be plugged directly into the STI's which they can't on my levers). Thankfully the mechanic who works on my bike (that I know quite well) was very good at hiding all of the wiring underneath the bar tape (and there is a lot of that). I did take my climbing shifter to the extreme and put some hockey stick tape on the zip ties (to of course smooth out the air flowing over it although of course this is a placebo effect of my brain staying this when in reality it does nothing for the air). I still have to buy the new battery (that has memory built in that your bike came with) so I can get synchro shifting for my DA and than the same D-Fly unit that you have so I can update the component firmware and re-program my system like you do in these videos but right now I am saving for a new trainer that I mentioned in a previous comment on a previous video (the battery and D-Fly unit will have to wait until I get back out on my road bike in the spring or whenever as I am so busy on Zwift that I had to write a schedule for myself as I have rides everyday and sometimes twice or even three times a day which is crazy [last week I clocked up over 436 KM and I have already flown past the 10,000 calorie mission that was put up at the beginning of this month]). Anyway sorry for the long comment. Hope you have a great weekend. Enjoy your new bike (it looks so cool and I am so jealous). Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Mike Prytherch for me those damn cables keep stretching and. Shrinking with temperature. Today I took a fall because I couldn’t shift down from the big chainring to the small one on a steep uphill, and couldn’t even unclip. Damm. My other bike has Di2. That would have never happened. Haha

Charles Rush P.S. Have you ever ridden Sram red 10 speed mech, or Campy EPS, or Campy revolution mechanical with the “b”screw wound in? I have, and Sram etap is a very slow shift compared to these groupsets. Period, It is very noticeable.

Charles Rush Please link a reference???,When it came out this was a big disappointment compared to DI2! I asked the shop and researched on the internet “no speed shift change in the software” I was willing to drop 4K aussie on this groupset, but it changed slow (told no adjustment) and the rubber hoods were very cheapie. You may like it, but at 4K I did not like it. I know DI2 has speed shift selection, but there is a number of vids out there on people going back to mechanical as they don’t like the low speed change of electric.

Owen Johnson well that is news to me, on reviews and in store I was told the Sram red speed can not be adjusted? Unless this is a new thing (software upgrade). I agree the control adjustment can be customised, and all that jazz, but that is not shifting better. I rode eps and Sram, although yeah it was nice, i don’t believe they are worth the extra coin unless your hands have some disability or you are finding it hard to do multiple shifts. Also every person i know who has had these have had flat batteries from forgetting to charge, i know that is operator error, but you don’t need to worry about it on mech. I will say on tri bikes electric is really good because you can have controls on both arms. But again, all this doesn’t make it shift better, and generally they are slower. The campy was the only one that is real fast, i don’t like the feel of slow soft shifting. Why i never have liked shimano transmissions. Don’t get me wrong, they all work well, but i don’t believe they are better, just nicer, and more convenient.

@Waynos Fotos You can adjust the shift speed. You can adjust a lot of things. Just riding one at a store will not give you the full details.
