Nice! Someone could start an entire youtube channel dedicated solely to explaining Di2 systems. Shimano provides almost NO information (at least none readable by a layperson) on setup, function, alterations and modifications. Don't get me started on the "E-tube project" app. I've found many bits and bobs of information on youtube and in forums, but (unless you tell me otherwise) there is no single, organized site or channel with all the information in one place. Rant over. Thank you for providing another piece of the puzzle.

Great video, very informitave , have ordered di2 up grade for my s3 and had to pay postage 3 times as there is no information from shimano on up grading to di2 parts and what u will need , hope i can set it up ok or u will be getting more request for info 👍

Very interesting information Shane. My BMC RoadMachine setup has Ultegra Di2 8050 groupset. In average my battery lasted 1200 to 1500 km, but it dramaticaly dropped to 300 to 400 km once I installed the EW-WU 111 module, so I gave up and decided to remove it. Now after some months looking here and there I found your usefull video, today I installed the EW-WU 111 module one more time, but setting ANT+ only. Hope this time I'll get battery lasting at least 1000 km.

Hey Shane. So if I understand what you think you understand based on what Shimano has told us, there are three communication channels. First is ANT+ ( data ), second id Bluetooth (data), add the third is Bluetooth (management). And the channel you disabled in the video was Bluetooth (data). In theory, this should have no impact on the ANT+ ( data) to the head unit or the Bluetooth used to configure the system using a mobile device? Is there even a use case fur Bluetooth (data)? I could understand having this ability if there were a popular activity tracking phone app that recorded Di2 data ( i.e. if Strava for iPhone or Android let you connect to a EW-WU1111 to record shifting info or display current gear info.). To my knowledge no apps currently do this (do they?). Anyway, I don't use Bluetooth for data or management unless I'm updating the firmware oh the wireless module itself ( I believe it's still required for this ).

Hi Shane, Great info here. Question about connection with Garmin Edge 820. If you change the communication mode to just ANT+ on the Shimano EWWU111 is the Garmin still able to show me info about the gears and the function of the top buttoms on the lever shifter to pass the Garmin Edge screen left/right? (basically the question is, what is the communication protocol used by the sensor to connect to Garmin Edge). Other detail, when I go to connect the garmin to the EWWU111 i need to hit the button of the DI2 central unit for 0.5s, then go to the Edge 820 and look for sensors, then Shimano Di2 and hit CONNECT option there, otherwise it won't connect automatically even when the groupset is wake up or broadcasting as you mentioned. I recently changed my cellphone from LG Android to Huawei Android. I have another problem here, for some reason the Garmin stopped giving me info about text messages and notifications in general recieved on the by the phone, feature that used to work fine with the LG cell phone, but I'm able to connect my cell phone using Garmin Connect to the Garmin Edge and even use the LiveTracking feature to share real time location. Shane, i got the same TCR as yours, followed your steps. Your video ends with, it won’t be seen after di2 System goes to sleep. But mine stays visible on bluelight no matter what. ( i also put it on ANT only). Did you encountered the same or mine di2 just doesn’t go to sleep :S. Thanks

After bricking my Di2 on the day I tried to do a firmware update right after installing my EW-WU111 (exactly like it happened with Shane) I am too scared to ever use this app again. Having the BT module inside the Giant Propel's notoriously tricky stem makes it a disaster to remove and reconnect the module if something goes wrong. Feel much safer doing it through the PC software even though that means dragging the bike to my office where my only Windows computer is. Once bitten, twice shy, I guess!

I get my Ultimate CF SL Disc 8.0 Di2 soon and I have also bought WU111. I hope I can excchange the connector at the handle bar with WU111. But I am scared about how to make the update :-) Is it correct that it is only possible to make the firmware update to WU111 by bluetooth over the app ? Or is it possible to update wu111 also with the charger and PC ? Will it brick always or only while having bad luck ? I am not sure where canyon has installed the battery and how difficult it is to unplug the battery to recover the system ... Or is the issue solved and the device is not bricking any more ?

In order for someone to change your gearing by connecting to it via bluetooth, wouldn't they have to know your pairing password? So it is secure even when broadcasting in bluetooth?

If you have one of these DI2 wireless connection modules, is there a way in the E-Tube project phone app to see the battery life remaining? I tried looking for this information when I use the SM-BCR1 battery charger and the E-Tube project software running on my Windows PC but I was not able to find this battery life info in the E-Tube project software for Windows. Did I miss something or is it not there?

Shane, I just installed the ew (even worse experience than you had) and I don't see an option to turn off blue tooth broadcast. I'm in an android and everything is completely updated. This should be in the app, yes?

So I just purchased this same unit and had it installed. It connects to my E-TUBE app on my IOS but my Wahoo ELEMNT Roam can't find it? IV tried connecting via the ELEMNT app and the Roam itself and it still doesn't find it. Any options? I've pushed all the buttons to wake it up and still nada.

Man this is so confusing for me. Is this recommended if using a Garmin 530? Trying to save as much battery life as possible.

Also I don’t understand how we can turn off Bluetooth broadcasts on the WU111 and then expect to access it for management purposes. It the same chip. If it’s off, it’s off. Are you saying that when we press the button on the RS910 unit it also turns on the Bluetooth on the WU111?

Just did this and now my phone is not picking up the wireless unit at all so I can't link the wireless unit with my phone and the etube app.
