"Following a multi-year global market study, product testing and development process, Shimano introduce the world’s first dedicated gravel component line: SHIMANO GRX. New for the 2020 model year, the SHIMANO GRX 800 series offers 1x11 and 2x11 drivetrains - with mechanical and Di2 electronic options - that allow riders to tailor their mixed surface riding experience and Explore Beyond." - Shimano
Following a multi-month review spanning some nine months, I have tested the GRX Di2 groupset far and wide, from the edge of the Australian Outback to the high country of Falls Creek in Australia, to summertime in Montana and all throughout the southeast, in Florida and Georgia. In both cases, I'm talking about the 2x specific version of GRX Di2, although I have ridden the 1x version on the all-new Specialized Diverge which is covered in this review.

Sweet and aspirational. Have to say the new bike budget came down to GRX Di2 or carbon wheels. I went with the wheels and love them. GRX mechanical 2x is amazing and the lever ergonomics are simply outstanding for my smaller hands. Now if Shimano would make a rim brake version of these levers, they would be on my road bike. Well done Shimano. Almost. 😊👌👍👏

Totally with you,had Di2 since the original 7970 series... faultless. Shimano aren’t silly though when it comes to their bottom line. Unfortunately Di2 remains in their halo groupsets only. Secondly doing the DIY wire set up is craaazily expensive with the multitude of wires and junction boxes required. Tried the grip ergonomics the other day....as a Di2 junkie I need this in my life!

Thanks for the video JOM. As to why 1x? I'd go with 1) Cost - there's no need to spend $$$$ on an electronic groupset to get a simple to operate, non-rubbing, non-crunchy gear system, 2) One less thing to go wrong. 3) Bigger tyres - 1x's chainline allows for them. Fwiw either going Mullet, or waiting for SRAM to bring twelve (or more) speed to the their mechanical road 1x setups looks like a better option to getting the smaller gearing gaps.
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 3 роки тому
Fair enough, thanks for the feedback. Shimano filed a 14-speed patent in the early 1990's... I thought, how insane is that, yet we have a 1x Rotor hydro groupset (a bit odd for sure) that is 13-speed. Wild times! More choices is the best part of all this development, 1x or 2x, choices for everyone.

Great review on the GRX Di2 there. I have Ultegra Di2 on my road bike, and can't fault the Di2 at all - has shifted perfect every single time, just need to check the battery level, as you mentioned in the video. Would love the GRX on my GT gravel bike, but being 100% external routing, I think my better bet would be either a new bike (n+1) or a new frame, and build it up to spec.
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 3 роки тому
David, if you use the Di2 cable tape to keep the cables attached to the frame, you'll have no problems running it externally. This is how all of my Di2 bike were before they started internalizing everything, I never had a problem. Honestly, the external battery that sits below the bottle cage is the best. Super easy to replace and access, and no issues with corrosion... I'v had two internal Di2 batteries die due to corrosion, but those were earlier models. I believe Shimano has corrected that issue now.

@@GravelCyclist Hi there. Do you see any reason why the GRX Di2 shifters and 2x rear derailleur would NOT work with my Dura-Ace road crank and Ultegra R8050 Di2 front derailleur? Thanks!
@Peter-tc3ep
@Peter-tc3ep 3 роки тому
1 or 2x really depends on where you ride, I ride in New England USA. We have lots of short steep hills were the 1X performs much better then 2X. Unfortunately natively right now the GRX doesn’t offer a great range, so you have to use an after market cassette and derailleur cage for better shifting with a better range like 10-46, 10-48 or 10-50 or 11-46, 11-48 or 11-50. My road bike is a 2X compact Dura Ace DI2 which is ok. I personally find the 12 speed SRAM red much better then GRX, wether 11 or 12 or 22 or 24 speeds. It’s lighter has an amazing range and no duplicate gears. You can shift two gears when a quick steep hill approaches verse 4 gears or changing chainrings and gears. The 10t on the cassette with 42t chainring gives me all the top end speed I need. Was thinking of switching my road bike as well since it is a decent weight savings and quicker and easier shifting then the 2X. I started with the GRX 1X on my Open UP then morphed it to GRX/Garbaruk to get the better range. Which worked well but requires constant derailleur tweaking due to the large pulley wheels and larger derailleur. Finally just switch to SRAM red which has worked amazing. Road bike might get switched to red 1X next. For hilly or constant changing inclines rides 1X is definitely the way to go.
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 3 роки тому
I politely disagree. I rode 2x all day every day I rode in New England a few years ago. People have choices, some like 1x, some like 2x. I am not a fan of people always jamming 1x down everyone's throat. Manufacturers are especially guilty of this.
@Peter-tc3ep
@Peter-tc3ep 3 роки тому
Gravel Cyclist definitely a choice, I’d just recommend demoing both 1 and 2 X before buying and both SRAM and shimano since shimano grx handles are some of the best shaped, very comfortable but their cassettes and derailleur for 1X are years behind SRAM. I ride in Ted King’s home town race each year in NH and a few in Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts. There’s definitely a split in who uses what. Both male and female Dirty Kanza winners last year used 1X. Ted King was using 1X also in his race last year, but the year before used 2X. I used to never be willing to try 1X, finally made the jump, hated it, a month later liked it, switched grx cassette to Garbaruk 10-48, loved it. Didn’t love the that larger ceramic derailleur pulleys and cage. They require a bit of constant maintenance. Switched to the Red works perfectly, 12 speeds, 10-50 cassette. I’d recommend trying it unless you’re sponsored by Shimano.

Totally agree with your gearing views especially for an all day self supported ride. I'm looking to purchase this group set and run 2 wheel sets. 1 gravel with a 36T and road 28T 30/46 up front. Would the b screw need resetting with each wheel change? and if it does will the derailleur thread cope?
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 3 роки тому
These shadow derailleurs are very sensitive to b-screw adjustment. I would setup it up for the 36T big cog first, then see how it shifts with the roadie 28T setup. Worse case scenario, you may need to turn the b-screw one full rotation to bring the derailleur closer to the cassette. If you're careful, I don't see a problem... I've doe plenty of tinkering, haven't blown anything up yet. Be sure to use a high quality 2mm allen key.

What a wonderful review. Hunting for gears and tire width are the two reasons I’d consider 1-by. What’s the overlap between the gear ranges of the 2-by systems like? Also, how much do they restrict the width of tires you can run? I believe the Diverge can run 47mm with its 1-by which is very appealing to me (I don’t think there’s much advantage to ever running tires outside of a time trial!).
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 3 роки тому
Thank you. I've run 700c x 50mm with Di2 and a 2x, it mostly depends on your frame / chainstay length, etc. 650b is another option with gives additional flexibility but will affect gear ratios. You'll have to spend time with the gear calculator I am afraid, there are a lot of options to evaluate.

I have the 1x grx wich i mainly use for cyclocross. The rear cassette is an 11-42 xt and feels awful in terms of gaps. Now with a 11-32 on it, it feels a lot better. Next up will be to go back to 2x with the ultegra cx crankset. On my mtb build i've opted for xtr 2x11 with ultegra 11-28 cassette. I flat out hate those wide range monster cassette's and i really wish shimano stayed far away from the sram hipster train. Great Review. What is the widest tire you can run as a 2 x. Tire width is also a big factor in 1x or 2x decisions. I believe you rode the Otso Wahella C with 700 x 50 tires. I'd be using a 68mm bsa bottom bracket and would like to keep the q factor as narrow as possible, but would likely use the Easton crank same as you have in the video. Great wrap up Jom. I saw you ran the 11-40 cassette with no issue as stated, but have you ever tried swapping your front chainrings to make a 48/30 setup? I used to run a 52/34 on a compact road crank with Di2 Ultegra 10sp and had no issues with the shifting or chain, so wondering if it's possible here instead of the 46/30 or 48/31? Maybe a good test to run for a future video?
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 3 роки тому
Hey there, 48/30 may not be possible, it all depends on chainring compatibility / crank BCD, etc. I find 48 a little too big for my liking, whereas I really like the 46/30 combination.
@RindoRob
@RindoRob 3 роки тому
@@GravelCyclist thanks for the reply. GRX shares the same BCD though for 48/31 & 46/30? Yeah I think most riders are quite over geared when it comes to casual riding so 46/30 is probably still the better fit, but been curious to see if the 48/30 works just the same. Cheers!

Di2 might be worth the extra $$$ for my next gravel bike. I currently do run 1x on my gravel bike (Sorry JOM!). 40T chainring, and 11/42 out back. I find it fine for the terrain here around Tallahassee, which is similar to what you ride. I have a dedicated road bike, so I don't have to worry about the big top end gear for group rides on the road. I had my gravel bike converted over from a 48/36, Shimano 105 with a 11/32. Bike came out in 2015 long before gravel group sets were a thing so my conversion was to get better gearing at a lower cost without having to upgrade bikes at the time. GRX rear derailleur compatibility with 11 speed 105 shifters saved some $$$ for sure as those didn't need switched out. Love the simplicity of 1x, but Di2 looks solid, so it's something to consider if I have the cash on the next gravel bike.

I do wish that grx had given the bigger ring more teeth (50 tooth) I find myself spinning the wheels in the last three rings in the cassette, and the middle of the cassette when climbing. while taking some teeth away from the smaller chain ring, I think that would have for sure made the bike more versatile on gravel/road.

thanks for making this review! a few questions: a) is the front derailleur cage smaller than the ultegra version to avoid hitting the chainstay with small chainrings? b) can you use grx di2 shifters with ultegra di2 derailleurs, or vise versa? what about xtr di2? c) any physical differences in the rd cages between ultegra gs and grx?

a. I don't have an Ultegra derailleur available to answer your question. b. Yes, you can mix and match shifters with those systems. c. You need to look up Shimano documentation, don't have a Ultegra derailleur laying around.

Can a GRX Di2 1x be converted to a 2x? I know I can add the derailleur and the front chainrings, but is there a different junction box for 2x? or anything else to change? No difference in Junction boxes, Di2 is pretty much plug and play. You will need an additional eTube wire for the front derailleur. I would plug the system into the eTube software once you're done configuring, to check for updates, etc.

Some big statements in there. More comfortable than campag levers and two by why bother with one by! What are thoughts about shimano adding a bigger official cassette for touring bikes and the future of adding twelve speed with microspline ie 10 tooth smallest rear sprocket?
@GravelCyclist
@GravelCyclist 3 роки тому
Troy, I'm a pretty upfront reviewer and opinionated! Campy ergonomics are very nice for sure. If Shimano goes 12-speed for this system, especially Di2 on GRX, I say forget about the 10T or even the 11T, they are barely used. I'd rather see some closer gaps in the cassettes and some bigger gears for touring bikes as you point out. As it is, the rear derailleur will shift a 40T no worries at all.

@GravelCyclist

Hello there, I'm wondering if your eTap noise issues are related to the often extreme chainline requirements of 1x? I'm not a fan of 1x, you can definitely feel gears running rougher at the top and bottom end of the cassette. I prefer 2x any day, those issues seldom happen depending on how you use your gears. 1x is good for MTB's and CX race bikes but miserable for gravel/adventure bikes. Less range, bigger gear jumps, and sub optimal chainline for most of the cassette. The only advantage is being able to dump a bunch of gears more quickly if you're riding very short and steep rollers but that's a small price to pay, especially for someone like me who's very pedantic about his gear selection. I say why should I give up any of the gears I had before with a 2x setup? 2x for the win!

@@AREMPEE I upgraded from 105 to ultegra di2 recently and honestly I cannot say it's worth it. I like di2 but the cost is just outrageous since there is hardly a performance gain over mechanical. The shifting is crisp, the throws up or down the cassette and chainrings are incredibly easy, the levers are simply fantastic. It's my first experience with disc brakes and the lever modulation is incredible. Time and experience will tell what the maintenance will be like to live with, though probably not too bad once I climb the learning curve.

@@GravelCyclist 1. Most people don't need a ton of top end, if you're not racing who cars about having optimal cadence at 25mph. 2. Front dérailleurs limit frame design, this is exacerbated as tires get wider and clearance at the BB gets tighter. 3. Limited tire clearance with short stays 4. One more thing to keep in tune, one more cable, one more shifter etc etc. Less = more 5. Cost. A well sorted 1x system has fewer parts and thus less things to buy.
