Problem with many android gpus isnt the power itself but the bad driver support. Thats why mali gpus tend to be so much worse than adreno ones.

In hexadecimal A comes after 9. So A series comes after 9 Series. Lets wait and see if they will have a 10 Series after F series.

PowerVR reminds me of ChainFire3D days when we had to fiddle with GPU plugins to play certain gpu specific games like the Nvidia's Riptide GP.

I had a lodger for a short period back in 2013 who worked for Imagination - he had a doctorate in something impressive if I recall and used to work for fun on this stuff throughout the evening - big shame it all went Pear (ahem!) shaped as I thought they were pretty much done for. Seems they're still alive and competing which can only be a good thing since they're based in the UK and up against the big guns :)

Hi Gary. Great video, sounds good what the new A series delivers. Question: do you know what GPU is inside the Apple iPhone 11? The only thing I could found is that it’s an 4-core “Apple designed” GPU. You cannot tell what Android 13/Windows 11s/ChromeOS will need in three years. More GPU? More AI? More CPU? And how much more? How much RAM/ROM/Storage needs to be adressed?

Gary Please can you answer one thing? Since This IMG chip can do 2TFlops and PS4 does 1.8Tflops so does that mean Console games can be played using this GPUs? Please answer. I know Efficient cooling system are required but Given that if Nintendo switch uses IMG chip with a cooling fan in a handheld device will it be able to play PS4 type of games?

Hey Gary, another great video so thanks but I really think you missed a trick in this video by not linking claimed performance to what we have today. What I mean is, even after watching your video I still have no idea what to expect from this new series as they cleverly only compared performance against their own older PowerVR chips and I don't know the best phone out there using their chips. I also don't know what TFLOPs or gigspixels Mali or Adreno get etc. So I have no basis to gauge whether PowerVR are still catching up to them or will be miles ahead. Do you see what I mean?

Ok, Qualcomm socs will always come with adreno, so question is what manufacturer will adopt these? Exinos traditionaly choose mali, all the chinese (hwawei, mediatek, allawinner etc..) also choose mali, nvidia has its own, so who'll use it? Does linux kernel already supports it fully? I don't believe will see this gpu on any popular device anytime soon or ever... All the manufacturers put good money for licencing mali, they won't put in the bin... Its a shame since powervr was amazing throughout the 90s ans 00s on dreamcast and iphones... Hopefully they'll stay competative and we'll see killer device with it so we won't have mobile gpu doupoll, also great video as always. I enjoy your videos so much. Thanks!

For comparison, Qualcomm's Adreno 640 GPU in their Snapdragon 855+ also offers 1TFLOP of performance while the PS4 and Xbox One offer just under 2TFLOPS. Modern PC GPUs like the RTX2070 and RX5700 are around 8TFLOPS.

A 2 TFLOP GPU is like having a GTX 1050ti at 2GHz in your phone. That is awesome. For example the Adreno 650 has 1,024 ALU's and rated at 1.2TFlops and the SD865 Plus's Adreno 650+ can hit 1.3TFlops. Not to shabby but, IMG PowerVR will have them best, easily. Most people don't know that the Adreno 640 (768 ALU's) in the SD855+ is the 1st Mobile GPU to pass the 1 Teraflop of FP32 compute, in a SOC that uses 9watts or less. The overclocked version of the Adreno 640 is 15% faster than the vanilla version of the Adreno 640 in the SD855, which is clocked a 100-150MHz higher. With every 100MHz, a Qualcomm Adreno GPU can gain a 10 to 15% performance boost. That's perfect scaling. Something desktop GPU vendors wish they could get. I even modded the SD845 and Adreno 630 (512 ALU's at 710MHz rated at 850 GFlops) with the ROG Phone 1 2.96GHz clock mod on the 4 HP A75/Kryo cores and boosted the Adreno 630 to 825MHz. This Adreno 630 is hitting almost 1 Teraflops of FP32 compute. 960GFlops to be exact but, that's what I call perfect frequency/performance scaling if i ever seen any. A 512 ALU Adreno 630 is coming close to the overclocked Adreno 640 that has 256 more ALU's and is on a newer architecture and 7m node. Anyway if you guys wwnt to compare GPU/CPU's and SOC's. There's these apps/apk's called SOC-L, GPU-L and CPU-L. ✔'em out.

Everything fantastic...in paper. IMG lives only by IP license as they don’t manufacture any chips. Therefore everything depends on how many licenses they will get in 2020 and more important what design they are going to provide. I still haven’t seen any Serious 9XT Furian around and remember last year there was similar hype around... but nothing happened. So guys what do you think are we really going to see any chip with IMG high specs in 2020?

I thought the IMG A Series will be used for other applications like inside TVs, radios, etc., anything but smartphones or tablets. Is only because of the change in the name. They're not going by PowerVRs again? Well seeing that Imagination Technologies also changed their name from Videologic, I guess they want to do the same with their brand of GPUs but years later.

If IMG Techs (PowerVR) new A-series GPU is rated at a TRUE 1TFLOP, then it has even Qualcomm's SD865's Adreno 650 GPU beat in RAW TFLPOS. The Adreno 650 is just shy of a full TFLOP. I think its rated at 9.678TFLOPS. i'm still running a overclocked Adreno 530 in the SD820 with my LGv20. I manually upgraded the Vulkan driver in Android 8 to Android 9's Vulkan driver. (Thanks to XDA and all there support). that's why I still have the LG v20. I was able to eak out another 10% uplift in performance with the Adreno 530. So its basically a SD825 with a Adreno 535 lol. So as far as the updatable GPU drivers, it looks promising. I rated the modded and overclocked (710MHz) Adreno 530 at 500+ GFLOPS. I only upgrade when the upgrade doubles my performance. its only worth the upgrade if the performance doubles, in my opinion. So it looks like ill be upgrading very soon.

Imagination have long history of mobile GPU, Samsung could have benefited with their partnership. I think Samsung brought the ticket after the departure of train.

I know snapdragon 845 has , 721 gigaflops processing power. Snapdragon 855 should has more like 1 teraflops, numbers can be same on different gpus from Qualcomm or ARM but seems apple's one gonna be overall better. Mostly because of IOS ,personally it's hard to me to imagine an android device without lag , esp long term gaming , ( don't get me wrong as a hater, just hard to make android optimized according to the numbers of different companies and SOCs which are qnd based. ) every manufacturer will do own thing to deliver better things but if products aren't similar on markets like one is so great and others mediocre compared to that one, competition won't be ruled there and customers will be actual losers. Android hardware makers ( Qualcomm/ARM etc.), have to deliver same kinda products / performance. Esp 2020+ this ideas will be important.
