I feel like the music video represents what happens when you need to cry but can’t. You do as much as you can to hold back tears, you do anything so that others don’t see you cry. Maddie portrayed that so well.

My video interpretation: Her hands represent the sides of the brain. Right-creative and sensible, Left-logic and under control. She is dealing with depression but the left hand wants to be a grownup and pretends to be okay, while the right hand wants to cry it out like a child would (her hands are fighting with each other). So she starts taking medication to keep her thoughts under control and can't tell anyone (when she talks to her foot). She tries to ignore what people say (when she desperately covers her ears) but gets lost inside her own mind (when she seems to be rolling) and looks for help (the other hands) they try to help by making her seem happy but they overwhelm her and end up suffocating her (when the hands cover her mouth) making her feel lonelier and she attempts suicide but fails. After that she hits rock bottom and takes more pills which make her "happy" (when she's laughing a lot) now she doesn't care about pretending to be okay (when she attempts to eat her left hand) but she loses control and ends up taking an overdose in an attempt to look okay (when her left hand punches her in the face) and she ends up delusional, we don't see her hands anymore, her mind is lost.

This song got me through the death of my dad. As the oldest, I was expected to carry the emotional load of everyone else; siblings, my mother, my kids. My family just seemed to expect me to be a rock and act like nothing was wrong, so that everyone else didn't fall apart, so that's what I did. But this song...it let me know it was ok for me to grieve. That I wasn't weak or pathetic, that I lost him too. So this song became my therapist.

The meaning: the first part is slow because she's slowly becoming depressed. She's beating herself up and starts nodding her head, trying to act like nothing's happening and trying to get herself back to normal. The pointing represents the way people are wondering what's going on with her, noticing and pointing at her. She then sucks her thumb but eventually pulls it away to represent a loss of innocence and childhood as she gets sadder and more heartbroken. When she eventually sinks into full on depression, she starts rubbing her hand over her mouth to represent putting on lipstick and eventually her whole face in makeup. She then smiles very quickly like the makeup made it better, but she begins to frown and taps her face so it goes away. She then starts fixing herself up again, fake smiling, and the motion she makes as if putting something in her mouth are pills/drugs. She then waves her hand around her face by her nose for smoking. Then she's bathed in purple light which represents getting high/drunk, talks to her foot because she's wasted and alone and doesn't have anyone to talk to. You can see a tattoo on her hand that says "don't think", because that's what happens when you're high, and another that says "whatever dude" because you stop caring when you're drunk. She goes offscreen and comes back to reality after it wears off. She touches her face, slightly disoriented, then tries to wake herself up, as if she's in a dream, (reality is the dream for her) by pulling at her eyes and pushing her lips. She starts eating, binging and taking pills, then pulls it back out as if to throw up (bulimia). She screams in frustration then slowly goes into a daze when she starts spinning, as if the shock of her situation and the heartbreak is too much. The hands are her mind and her mental disorders, trying to keep her awake by pulling at her eyes, then realizing that won't work and pulling her ears into a fake smile to pretend she's okay. When they make swimming type motions it's as if she can't breathe and is trying to, then the hands cover her mouth which is like her mental disorders telling her to keep quiet and pretend it's alright. When she gets lifted up it's a suicide attempt (hanging), her feet get incredibly pale and white but the attempt fails or she stops herself. Then she begins to move her hands violently, fear and frustration and anger taking over, the scissors most likely representing cutting and her eating her hand as if to say shut up, don't cry. She's in pain, repeating the motions, until she desperately does more of the eating motions, taking pills, and the lighting becomes purple again because she's high. She starts laughing almost desperately because she's under drugs, before coming back to reality. This time she's in serious shock at herself and the world, staring at her hand in disbelief and looking incredibly upset and out of place, too used to being high and/or drunk and the pain hits her full on. She pulls a finger down her face for a tear, starts stuffing her hand in her mouth to make herself stop, before punching herself in the face which puts her finally back in the real world, and starts staring open-mouthed, stunned, at the mess she's become.

I heard that the video represented child stars, and how Hollywood manipulates them- I.e. 0:32 being forced to stop acting like a child and having makeup plastered all over them the lighting change at 1:06 for the exhausting performances she has to do (hence why she's so against it on the 'phone') 1:32 either being bulimia from the pressures to look perfect or going down the path of most child stars and becoming involved with alcohol/drugs etc (hence why her world starts spinning and she's driven mad) The hands are the industry controlling her life/every move and literally suffocating her (note the lighting change again) Acting as if everything is fine when in the limelight at 2:53 despite being deeply scared and unhappy in reality And then eventually being left alone and unwanted after rebelling and/or growing up at the end

The song is really really great, but, to my mind, the video is a PIECE OF ART.Sia is one of the most talanted people in this world.

There are 4 stages in this video. 1st is insecurity as she puts on makeup. 2nd is depression as she begins to feel worse about herself. 3rd is drug addiction, she takes drugs to feel better and to numb the pain she is feeling. 4th is redemption, she snaps out of her dark world, realises the mistakes she's made, and sees the real world again.

Sia is a musical genius ,I have never felt listening to music the way I feel listening to this brilliant artist .her songs are simply earth shattering and what a voice .I had never heard of sia until my son played her cd and wow was it a moment that opened my ears to her sound .she deserves to be recognised as a truly brilliant artist and song writer .May she keep giving her all to all people .

I think anyone who finds Sia's videos "odd" " "horrible" "A joke" etc.. truly do not understand the story and pain behind it all. These videos are an expression of what Sia and many others have and are still going through. Depression, addiction, lack of self identity and utter madness. Sia has taken the chaos that goes on in an unhealthy mind and beautifully expressed it through her videos. Both Sia and Maddie are truly amazing artists and I hope to see much more from them.

this looks like what having an anxiety attack feels like. Sometimes I just can't keep myself from crying and shaking when I feel out of control, but there's such a stigma about mental illness that pressures you to keep it all bottled up. but sometimes it just feels like something is clawing at your eyes, sometimes at your heart, it hurts to breathe, and every muscle feels like it's not yours, kind of like someone is trying to take control of you. but anxiety is like the other pair of hands. we have to recognize that it isn't part of us, it's something that creeps up behind you and forces itself.
