Insulin resistance can be measured. However, the gold standard method is invasive, expensive, and simply not practical in a clinical setting.
So, how do you know if your efforts toward better health are paying off and making your body more insulin sensitive? This video shares a test and observable signs that you are overcoming insulin resistance.

After six months of no sugar, low carb and intermittent fasting 4-5 days per week my skin tags are gone and my waist is down from41 to 36. Still a ways to go, but am so thankful for your videos and helpful tips. I am a 78 year old woman and had little hope of being metabolically healthy. Thanks for your practical tips and clear explanations of things to do. Now to convince the doctor I don’t need the statin he prescribed.

I started intermittent fasting since 2022. I would finish my last meal no later than 7pm and would not eat again until late morning the next day. I felt good going to bed with an empty stomach did not lose much weight. I added ketogenic diet on top of that beginning December 2023. I have seen big improvement both in weight loss and fat reduction around the waistline after two months!

Just (1) day of fasting per week can do a lot. You BG and insulin are lowered. You also will learn what hunger feels like. This will help you not feel hunger on the days you eat normally. If you have body fat going 24 hours is not harmful or difficult. Many find going 36 to be easier. You just skip dinner and go to bed.

I have followed these videos for about a year now and monitored my morning blood glucose. My discovery is that bread can spike my glucose level quickly so I severely limit any bread or carbohydrates to as close to or blow 20g per day. I am now 71 years old and glucose levels have stabilised at normal levels for some time and thankfully my weight is reducing, so far 12kgs. I cant really see my eating habits changing from this routine. Intermittent fasting and low carbohydrate with monitoring my macros really works. This process I started due to vaccine damage and also thankfully my fitness and digestion is returning to normal, although I was wary of putting any stress on my heart. This summer with continuation of this way, I have new extended goals for weight loss and exercise. Thank you for your help.

I asked my doctor the other day if I can test for HOMA-IR on my next blood draw, and he did not know what I was talking about. After watching this video, I was able to calculate my HOMA-IR. At my last blood draw, I had asked to be tested for fasting insulin in addition to fasting glucose. Now I know what my HOMA-IR is. Also, since my A1c is at pre-diabetic level, I have stopped eating rice, pasta and bread and continue with 17 hours (sometimes 18 hours) fasting. Quality sleep, stress management, exercise, low-carb diet will likely help me bring down the A1c back down in 4 months when I do my next blood draw, and also help me bring down both fasting glucose and fasting insulin level. Thank you for producing quality videos and helping many people.

Avoid processed oil even olive. Fatty liver goes with insulin resistance, the definition of diabetes is insulin resistance and fat that spilled over. My doctor didn't know those tests. I had to ask several times with endocrinologist and a c peptide test for insulin resistance. Also avoid adding salt as there is already salt in food. It is corrosive can cause hemorogic stroke. Dr fuhrman duscuses this in UKposts. There lots of skinny diabetes. 90 % of population e either prediabetic or have it and don't know. Your body can struggle for decades before until it's to late and into dialysis. Just check your insulin resistance with a c peptide test

I‘m a nurse, I’ve known my doctor for probably 30 years, but he has only been my doctor for about 18 years. He is hard headed and old school, didn’t believe I could reverse diabetes., so I didn’t tell him that on Sept 1, 2019 I quit my metformin and my pravastatin, and started alternate day fasting and keto. Two weeks later I was down 10 pounds, he told me I looked like I was losing weight, his office staff said, „she is“. He asked if there was anything I wanted to tell him, and I told him no, that it would get ugly, I would have to tell him to go in his office and close the door.😂 He said he didn’t want to hear. The office staff knew what I was doing. I told him when the time was right he could know. When January came, 4 months after I started my lifestyle change, I had my first HgbA1c that was a full 3 months test since my change in eating habits. My A1c was 5.2, and my cholesterol was the best it had been in years, with my triglycerides in normal range. I was down 60 pounds. So I told him that I quit my meds in September, and now I’m not diabetic, my cholesterol is the best it has been in years, I’m doing keto and fasting. He told me it would come back, it always gets worse. He also commented that my cholesterol was just over 200. So we did our usual, bickered like an old married couple!😂🤣. He is still waiting for diabetes to come back, sends me for A1c‘s every 3 months, but did finally admit just last month that I’m not diabetic. One time I asked him for an order for an insulin level and he almost lost it. He told me nobody orders those, and that was ridiculous. He gave me the order though, I have him trained.😉

I got a CGM about two months ago. I am a 71 yo male. At the start I typically found my glucose level to be around 210mg/dl. As I found what spiked my blood I eliminated those foods from my diet. Just the elimination of the blood spikes brought my reading down to numbers under 130. One morning during the first week I had a reading of 60. Woah, that's a low number and I guess I was going to low. The medications I was taking Glipizide and Metformin. I removed the Glipizide completely and cut the Metformin to half. My blood sugar was completely normal and stayed between 90-130. I've noticed that coffee, sad to say causes big spikes (and I don't put sugar in it) so I switched to one cup of tea in the morning. Bread, pizza, noodles, potatoes and rice no more. I had read all the things I should avoid but it wasn't believable never realized how my mind works. Realization was the key for me. When I go to the grocery store now I take a typewritten list and stick to it.

When I first mentioned my skin tags to my then family physician some 5-6 years ago, she dismissed them as a sign of aging: she jocularly calls them barnacles, she said. Not a word about insulin resistance, let alone it being a precursor of diabetes 2. I had to educate myself via UKposts videos like this one and get an insulin resistance diagnosis in Europe, while visiting relatives there, to figure out what was going on and what to do about it. Btw, I simultaneously had digestion issues and burping in an empty stomach that she recommended TUMS for. I even got myself tested for H. pylori; negative. It was just a few weeks after I'd adopted the low-carb way of eating that I noticed my burping was gone and I no longer had any digestion issues. Some people, like me, really don't do well on carbs and need to eliminate all grains and sugar for good. Occasional consumption of either is ok, but by occasional I mean once or twice a month, tops. I find carbs so addictive that for now -- I still have quite a bit of weight to lose -- it's best not to have any at all.

20 years on keto now (it wasn't even called this when I started). First meal of the day would be an English breakfast: 2 rashers of bacon 2 eggs, 2 sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and water cress or lettuce with lashings of black tea. Could be any time up to 3pm from a 7-8pm meal the night before. Didn't do this to drop weight as I've never had a problem in this respect. Changed my former vegetarian diet due to the chronic, debilitating and incessant pain - which ceased within 1 day of switching to keto. One thing I'd highlight to anyone considering switching is to watch your triglyceride:HDL ratio and keep it below 2.0. to ensure no heart problems. Keep your trigs low by avoiding carbs and your HDL as high as possible by eating LOTS of saturated fat (and avoiding all seed oils). All other lipid profile markers are irrelevant.

I've had a few high fasting blood sugar results over the last few years but my doctor hasn't really explained all of the signs and symptoms or made a big deal about it, however, I've researched my results and i can consider myself pre-diabetic!. I DO have a few extra skin tags which I didn't understand. Nice to be able to link it to something. Makes sense as I've also read a lot that says sugar feeds cancer growth which I assume skin tags are a benign form of.

I wear a CGM and have been awakened in the night several times since starting my CGM due to low glucose (under 58) There doesn’t seem to be a lot of information on UKposts regarding this condition, mostly type 2 which I don’t have but am close to pre. I keep my insulin low throughout the day and have only had three spike since starting the CGM three weeks ago. Once with brown rice, another with a very heavy dessert, and a spike with a hot bath. Perhaps you could shed some light on why a bath would cause my glucose to go from 79 to 146 then back down 15 minutes after getting out of the tub. all very interesting stuff. I don’t like being awakened in the early morning hours though. Sleep is gold for me. Thank you

Using one of these units which is connected to your phone, it's not safe, having your information on the internet , an ipns don't work good enough, I suggest you just eat right and check your blood sugar as much as possible, On a graft 180 on the top and 80 on the bottom, keeping my numbers within the graft, I'm getting 99 up to 1:54, which all are within the graft, and knowing what spikes your blood sugar depending on what you eat, paying attention to what you eat is very important, and there's more to this as far as disciplining yourself and knowing what you can eat and what you can't eat, not watching what I was eating landed me on the floor with a diabetic coma, I almost died, but once I understood what was going on and paid attention to what I ate, my levels which I keep now within the 180 and the 80 on the graft, changed everything, but I'm still using two long-lasting shots of insulin a day, but I'm working towards no insulin whatsoever with a doctor's supervision.

I bought my CGM from RapidRXUSA for $89, for two weeks. Downloaded the free app. It last for two weeks. I used it to text theories around what happened with my blood glucose when I walked after eating, slept more hours or eating lower carbs, more protein, etc. The two weeks usage allowed me to create a plan that I can follow with certainty without relying on a CGM. I now know when it's working based on my body cues. Hope this helps!

@JayJayNay, I'm also in Canada, and I DO NOT want one! It's NOT necessary! I'm a type two diabetic and the highest my HbA1c ever got was 7.3. My doctor couldn't advise me on what I should do to lower my numbers. He sent me to a dietitian-nutritionist who advised me to eat 6 times a day; one of the meals consists of 3 high-carb foods; imagine rice, yellow lentils, and potatoes, in the same meal! I left and never returned. I searched on UKposts and watched many videos, some of them with Dr. Mandell, Dr. Berg, and other doctors, plus a pastor named Mr Dennis Pollock. Those gentlemen are helping many of us worldwide! May God bless them🙏 Next, I went to Shopper's Drug Mart and bought a "Contour Next" glucose monitor test kit. I started consuming low-carbs, moderate protein, and fats, drinking 2 litres of water and walking every day on my treadmill when I didn't go outdoors. I began testing my blood glucose (only) when I consumed a meal that I thought was a bit higher in carbs than usual. Within 5 months, I brought down my HbA1c to 6.0, with the help of those doctors, the pastor, and my glucose monitor that only takes a tiny drop of blood; the needle is so fine that you don't hurt at all whenever you prick your fingertip! You can do what I did and I can assure you that you'll be happy! Btw, you'll also get 2 boxes of FREE test strips per year; each box has 100 strips; you can buy whatever you may need for yourself. Mr. Jay, I wish you the best, and God bless 🙏

Every other day it would look like I was a screaming diabetic when I took the medication for my platelet disorder. Subsequently, the compiled data wasn’t accurate or helpful. The Freestyle Libra was not impacted by the medication! I would say having a CGM is very beneficial in determining food choices!👍👍

Check you insulin resistance along the way too c peptide or homa it test.

Continuous glucose monitor is mostly uninteresting for non-diabetics. Your body compensates until it can’t anymore. You can be close to full diabetes and have a near flat sugar curve. Before diabetes breaks out you may have 5 times as high insulin than a normal person. When you cannot compensate anymore, that’s when diabetes suddenly appears.

I regained all my weight though. Then just two years ago at 35, I decided to lose weight using low carb, exercise and fasting. As a result I’m now just about 185lb or so. I’m healthier than I ever was before, my waist has gone down from 44 to around 36, and my bmi is in the over weight range, no longer obese. I’m making progress at getting to normal weight bmi. In the UK the NHS will absolutely NOT measure insulin. Can't find any private practice to do it either. Very frustrating. I read that in Europe 14% of people diagnosed as type 2 diabetic actually have a late onset autoimmune disorder and are actually type 1. NHS doesn't care, the "solution" is just the same. This way to the inevitable medication escalator. I guess insulin is the bread and butter earner for pharma - keeps it ticking over between statin crazes & such

A question: how long is normal for your A1c to get below 5.7? I have been keto/carnivore for 14 months. My last A1c was a repeat reading of 6.1. That was in October 2023. My next A1c will be in April. Based on morning fasting glucose numbers, averaging about 116, I'm not expecting my A1c to go down much or at all. Are there people like me that might take 2 or 3 years to get the A1c down below 5.7? I'm 66 yo. C-peptide 2.2. Fasting insulin 7. I weigh 157. Before keto, my A1c was 6.7. I lost 30 lbs in the first 6 months, but weight holding steady since. I wore a CGM for 2 weeks and it was quite stable during that time. I feel that the diet is working, but would love to see A1c improvement.
@LauraB.335
@LauraB.335 2 місяці тому
Two questions: are you sure you’re in ketosis? And do you fast at all? If so, how long? A1c typically isn’t hard to get down pretty quickly, but depending on metabolic issues, it may take a bit longer. I would incorporate longer fasts and make sure you’re in ketosis most, if not all the time, for a while.

Dr. Becky, You may not read the comments this late after this video, but I wanted to reach out to you because my husband got some confusing Labs yesterday. He has lost close to 50 lb doing low carb. He felt awful in the beginning and started taking an electrolyte supplement called lmnt to help with keto flu and leg cramps. It made a huge difference! He got his labs this week and his LdL went way up, triglycerides went way down to 51, HDL went up to 56, and his A1C went up to 6.2 from 5.7 previously. His CO2 was low as well. His doctor was thrilled about the weight loss but she was very upset about the LDL and the CO2. She wants to put him on a statin, she wants him to start eating potatoes and bananas and less protein and she wants him to stop drinking the lmnt. My husband is so discouraged and we don't know what to do. I think she's at a total loss with people who do keto. We need a doctor that understands this lifestyle so they can help us navigate it. Any advice?
