"We're not good at everything, we're not good by ourselves," says Simon Sinek at the 99% Conference. Our ability to build trust and relationships is the key to our survival as a race, and to thriving as ideamakers.

I just recently discovered Simon and I have become a huge fan of his thinking. His insights are provocative and his compassion sincere. I just purchased his book and I can't put it down. Fascinating, simply fascinating insight into how and why we behave the way we do as people.

Amazing. The feeling you get after helping another human being is the most pleasurable one. I felt one the very first day I had a chance to help a patient. I felt connected and a part of something huge and important.

Wow, I just discovered Simon Sinek and he is definitely one of the greatest speakers I have ever seen. This is the first video I've seen from him and I can tell this guy is really good at drawing people in when he speaks because of the energy and authenticity of his stories. He reminds me of other inspiring speakers such as Eric Thomas.

I agree and he draws us in because he actually really DOES mean what he says.. He's not giving a speech. He's talking to us... There is a HUGE difference.

I have to admit, I absolutely love everything I perceive of Simon Sinek, the messages he delivers, and the passion at which he presents. But I will say, from my personal experience in life, if you give most of your energy to everyone else, you will be taken advantage of and make sacrifices to what’s important to you. Such as family, kids, pets, and you individually... leading to exhaustion and frustration. Now I will also say, we in the USA, are dealing with an epidemic of Narcissism, the Me, Me, Me culture... think of all the Facebook and Instagram posts we see on daily basis... therefore this message is powerful for the majority. For the minority who have tried living their life for others mostly, we need to actually do the opposite. Put ourselves first, spend our energy with the ones who deserve it, and find peace with who we are.
@christopherbrown93623 роки тому
I agree, in that you can't give what you don't have. So if you're already a depleted person, then what you have to offer won't be much. Therefore, to be a blessing to others, you have to start each day by filling your own cup FIRST so that if people take advantage of your abundance (whatever that looks like), you still have enough in the tank to get you to where you're already trying to go. So "getting" to "give" is definitely the way to go in my book!

Wow, great talk and ironic I listened to this today because I was able to apply one of its lessons without even knowing it. I was out and about and saw a homeless person today holding a sign in a spot many of them frequent and usually just pass by. However, unlike all the other signs that say the traditional things we're used to seeing, his had one word on it - SMILE. Not only did I crack a smile, but I felt compelled to offer up a couple bucks to this person, which I never do, and I couldn't grasp why. He asked for nothing but a simple smile and it seemed to have such a profound effect that I was more willing to give to his cause, now I understand why.

My husband I were talking and we could literally not think of one time that either one of us has disagreed even once with even one point Simon has ever made. Even after watching him for years. Simon thank you!! It is courageous to maintain your integrity, humbleness and wanting to give back!! Every time I watch you I learn and mostly relearn significant and important lessons. Yesterday I used your quote about time being the greatest and most valuable resource with my kids. And now they might actually come back to visit. Lol! For just that night your words transformed a tough day into one that I am so grateful for.

Many years ago, I was hired on to a company to do a relatively menial job as a cashier in a gas station. And during the interview I was asked a question, something to the effect of how well do you work with others, or with customers etc. And I answered him with: People are fun, if you just know how to speak to them. For instance let's suppose I start my day in a truly foul mood. It's just been one of those days where nothing has gone right. What happens when I great that first person in the morning who's maybe also locked into one of those days. Well I make it a habit, to feed positivity into everyone with whom I interact. And really it's easy. You show them the respect of recognizing that they exist and are present. You speak with a slightly higher pitch in your voice. And you put some energy into this. 99 times out of 100, even if that person was equally in the pit of it just being one of those days. Will smile back, and give some positivity back to me. And in this way, my own mood is lifted. And I feed on that throughout the day. The interviewer had only one more questions for me. When can you start. Empathy (emotional empathy), is the ability to create in yourself the emotional state of the person with whom you are interacting. When we do this, our brains respond with the "What a good boy am I" response. More specifically it will release endorphins that make us feel good. It does this because we have then successfully socialized by generating an emotional state that matches our interlocular or group. It is the mechanism that drives us, and indeed all social animals, to socialize. And in fact, it is the diminishing of, or lack of, empathy that leads to everything that we think of as being negative, anti-social, or to use a much older term evil. I know that sounds like an oversimplification. But we are, far more simple, in many respects, than we think. An ex-girlfriend of mine, who was at the time living with a group of women once quipped. After a week that had been particularly vile in terms of the interactions of the group. That they needed to add an item to the weekly grocery list. That they needed to pick up a fresh can of evil. Because they had obviously used up all the stores inside of those few days.

@@MrEpsilonZero I am no longer able to work due to a rather complex disability. However yes in my day to day life, when I see people I still do this. As far as people who are always negative, I find the best policy is to avoid them whenever possible. If that is not a feasible, then keep it strictly business and don't engage on a social level at all. If they are a co-worker you can always refer the issue to a supervisor. If they are your supervisor, most companies have human resources departments that can help to deal with such issues. Sometimes, it can become necessary to find a new company to work for if no good solutions are to be found. Another area to explore that can be very helpful is to make sure that all of your self talk. That inner voice we all sometimes converse with. Is feeding you positive messages. Yes we do have control over what it says. But it can take work to untrain the negative things out and feed in the things we should be hearing instead. Look into self affirmations if this is something you recognize isn't something that's a positive in your life.

We all have inherent positivity in us. But we rarely listen to our inner voice. Because we most often than not are misguided by our own selfish mind. This talk brings us closer to our real self.

Dear Simon Sinek Thank you for revelations about ourselves. I consider your presentations a gift that I am still unwrapping. Much of what you say in “If you don’t understand people, you don’t understand business” is right on. But the magic potion that is needed to digest these insights is rare and allusive. . Only in your Q&A session did the gap between understanding and implementing become apparent. Your audience is asking for further explanation as to how your theories apply to their cases. Your response is in a way a reiteration of your well grounded theory but short of giving respondents what they were looking for. A “Do it for me” answer. Knowing what you believe in is hard enough. Articulating it is a skill worth developing but it is not a given. Without getting into deeper argumentation I have summarized my observation as follows: Giving interested people the eight notes does not make them musicians. The interpretation of these notes is what makes the music Best regards, Alex Goslar

Re: Trust I listened also to Brene Brown about trust and how she broke down it's anatomy. I have felt also that it is in fact a feeling as well and likely coming from those constituent pieces being in place. I feel in this digital age with social media being so insidious in society trust is becoming a rare commodity for people. Mine has been pushed beyond the breaking point so often I wonder if I can trust anyone truly again.

great talk. some people need to work on themselves though before they are mentally equipped to help others. and a part of helping themselves get out of their own hell will in turn help others by showing the way. i'm not talking about material wealth either. this is because others are suffering, or in their own hell, so they are a product of their environment and their view and actions. and we should help the sick help themselves, so they can show other people how to get out.
