Evangelism is not much different from an insurance agent trying to rope you in to listen to their sales pitch on the streets.

I'm Christian but I also believe in protecting the common/public space from (any) religion, in light of mutual respect. Much as the intent to evangelise is admirable, some efforts, if inappropriate, may cast a bad light on the faith and backfire.

This is what is called a hostage situation. Everyone on the passenger didnt get to choose whether to listen to it or not. No way to get out, no way to get them to shut up without souring the whole plane's mood. I think it's just basic respect of personal space especially when everyone is trapped in a plane thousands of km up in the skies. You cannot expect people to jump off the plane to get out of the situation, therefore, it should be on the "acting" party's part to do their due diligence and think of whether it affects them. The fact that SG govt has to set laws for Evangelism means that they don't trust people to maintain personal boundaries
@terence3908
@terence3908 2 роки тому
Couldn't agree more. A lot of people lack awareness and respect for others' personal boundaries, and try to impose on others what they feel is "right". These people need to understand that the world doesn't revolve around them and bystanders don't care about their opinions.

Many years ago, I went home by taxi. When I went into the car, the taxi driver (in his 50's) asked me "Hi boy, are you a Christian?" I answered "No". He replied "Oh, I feel sad for you boy, because you will be going to hell..." Then in my mind I was like "What in the fucking world did I just heard?!?!"... Good job at introducing your religion to non-christian, uncle lol

thankfully John is in this panel to provide a separate viewpoint. Referring to around 10:40, my take is that ultimately, churches or any other religious organisations need funds to operate and there's a need to have followers in order to sustain or even increase the operations. The "Fun" aspect of most churches is like good "marketing". I mean ultimately, almost all religions preach to do good and be good right... So how do you differentiate yourself might be key. Also youths are great to recruit. 1) Their mindset and understanding have not fully mature 2) They love fun 3) Most youths have a "crisis" phase, they'll need support 4) They are the people who ultimately donate, if not now, then when they are financially ready

I had an encounter in the MRT last year. A lady sat beside me and started singing Christian songs which was quite loud, I can hear still hear her while watching Netflix with my earpods on. Then suddenly she started crying, like sobbing, and everyone around started staring at her and me at the same time. :)

Inappropriate. If it was another religion doing something similar, it wouldn't even be a debate. We strive for religious tolerance. People should be able practice their religion in their own time and place, as long as you do not impose your religion on others or be a nuisance. 1 song might be bearable, but there were obviously people who were uncomfortable. The problem with evangelism is that in reality, it often comes with badgering, snide remarks and a misguided sense self-righteousness which really makes people uncomfortable / annoyed. If it's a sale pitch, it's a really bad one. It's almost like you don't really want others to join, but rather your existing members to be rejected / shun by the general public and feel more connection to their religious group where they are "accepted".
@zephthewind
@zephthewind 2 роки тому
I was from a Christian school growing up and didn't feel like I belonged because I'm not religious at all by any means. However, my dad always wished for his children (I have a younger brother) to pursue Christianity. Been approached so many times be it at the MRT stations back in the day and "pressured" by friends and acquaintances alike to attend their churches. Just never did like the premise of being evangelised like that. Also used to attend HOGC as I was invited by a uni cohort mate and felt so uncomfortable when I attended a few of their services that I just stopped going and cut off contact with the youth group I was "a part of". For example, I never did connect or relate with any of the testimonies that the church members shared, and was also made to feel bad for not tithing. Now when people ask me if I have a religion or am religious, I just say I'm a freethinker.
@aexlee7255
@aexlee7255 2 роки тому
i relate with this so badly, some people can tell that i cant exactly relate with their testimonies, and if i admit that im not religious then they (esp parents) will feel the need to share the gospel with me more. Though i understand that parents would always want their best for their children, to what extent should they impose it on their children ? its easier to dodge strangers like the examples talked about in this video but its pressuring when this is a huge part of your life you never chose to be a part of(a good example would be pastor's kids), it's a tricky situation to be in without having any conflict. wished this was talked about more often.

I had an encounter with one of these evangelists at NUH around 3 years ago. I was rushing back to camp after a medical appointment and got stopped by this Christian guy. I kept reiterating that I was Buddhist and was in a hurry (I was even wearing my No.4) but he kept stalling me to tell me about his religion and quoted some stuff from the Bible (I vaguely remember it was something about how he was trying to prove that Science came from God because of how God decides the weather patterns). I then politely asked him to speed things up so I can rush back to camp, so he sped up slightly and concluded by inviting me to his church to attend their service. I once again reiterated that I was Buddhist and had no interest in converting to another religion, and as I was about to leave, he stopped me again and asked for my number so that he could contact me with more Christian-related information. I declined and just walked off, but man, while I’m amazed by the persistence, it’s such a turn-off to anyone who isn’t interested.

those evangelists will specifically target people they deem as vulnerable, which irks me alot. vulnerable people such as young children/teens, 3rd world country people who has little to no access to education, and people who are in a bad stage in their lives. The fact that they target these people make me feel so disgusted. cuz they are only using other people's weak side to force their believes on them, in a way trying to brainwash or manipulate them.

I just feel like evangelism is quite creepy and imposing. I was once forced to go for an evangelical event in the neighborhood for my church and I felt so bad for telling people about the word and stuff. Still people then could have left at any moment. Stuck in a plane like that, there's no escape. Religious song or not, it's just annoying that someone else is disturbing your ride. I don't think that beneficiaries should feel obligated to listen to teachings of a religious organisation even if they are receiving help from them. It can exist but it must not be enforced.

I think the issue is that they were trying to FORCE a "moment" to happen. I remember once i was in a plane cabin with this big group of students who had been away for exchange for months. As the plane was decending, someone hummed the intro to Home ... few seconds later more hummed along... and when they hit the chorus... most of the cabin joined and sang out " This is home....". Even for me who was only away for few days felt so much joy of being Home.

Thankful for Jon (and the other John) on this show. The other members are usually always aligned in their thoughts and square, which can be frustrating because you can't really dive deep into the issues (so kudos to Jon for really providing amazing questions and insights). Honestly, as a non-Christian, I have no issues with Christians breaking into religious songs too - I think it's a great expression of faith and other desirable attributes. Just not around people in public because it is distasteful. To the plane-worshipper-singer-John, we can't fault him; I'm sure his heart was in the right place, but hopefully this incident helps him understand that matters of religion should be private to yourself and maybe your community at most without involving (and inconveniencing) the others who are too afraid to speak against this act.

I was against the singing (of any kind) mainly because of the concept of consent. It's not something that is mentioned during most discussions online but based on the podcast, you can tell that Consent is at the core of all their reactions and examples. So in essence, before doing anything, you need to gain consent from the audience/people you are performing the action towards. Additionally, the guy supposedly had gained permission from the Captain of the flight. Therefore, if anyone detest this guy's actions, logically they should also detest and offer the same reaction onto the captain. But this doesn't seem to be happening on any online discourse. My two cents.

My Assulter deserves a place in heaven despite he had traumatized many.. but even if you are a good person you would burn in hell cause you dont accept god. So in my own conclusion Christianity is about forcing and also pretty much encouraging "bad deeds?"..
@MeADow0201
@MeADow0201 2 роки тому
@@jasminetay9820 i think a clearer answer would be that's because most of us think that we are good enough by not committing crimes while the christian pov is no one is good by their own, no matter how much good deeds, we cannot save ourselves. Also there is no point in believing something we can achieve by our means? To some, if believing in Christ encourages them to sin/continue in the bad deeds you are saying, then perhaps they have not understand the grace and how much they have been forgiven by God. The person would have changed their minds and actions as a result. Tldr we were supposedly deserving of death(imagine not being able to enjoy/feel loved eternally) but through faith in Christ we can have hope and also eternal life, this is offered to everyone regardless of what they did. I remember a few years back during sec 1, when I was doing a fundraising with my cca for flag day at a hdb estate when this old woman came up to me. When I asked her to donate money, she proceeded to ask me if I was religious. When I said that my extended family was Buddhist, she proceeded to call them “fake Indian gods” and told me to worship Jesus instead. At the time, I did not know what to do(and still wanted her to donate), so I just smiled and nodded until she went away. Personally, I am not very involved in any religion, so at the time I just sat down with the understanding that insulting another religion was the worst way to convert others to yours.

I know my comment seems late, but yes I am Buddhist as well. Like you, I have also experienced evangelism where some Christian man, that look like in his 40s came up to me last year when I was at Republic Polytechnic, telling me if I want to know about god’s love and why Jesus was hung on the cross. I was like “wtf?” But firmly declined and walked away quickly after that, before he could get religious. I believe he was from the nearby Woodlands Evangelical Church as he was evangelising lol. Speaking of JEWEL, I’ve been there a number of times and saw a significant number of people wearing cross necklaces. It seems weird but to me it indicates a high presence of Christianity there. Main intention: Charity or Evangelism? 2) Doing events and games (especially for youth) and after all the fun they flip the switch and start to preach. typical 挂羊头卖狗肉。(I've been to one of these, and they literally blocked the exit: door closed, shutters down, church members guarding it)

My thought is that if i don't like it or really need to rest, I can just tell the group to stop singing the songs on the plane. It's that straightforward. And I would have done that.. And if the group doesn't listen to me, and still sing, then I will complain about it online or to the airline. The group which did that probably wouldn't think so far as to whether their singing will affect this or that blar blar blar. Their intention is just to spread I guess words of God and love (I'm Buddhist), and other religions do the same.. I wouldn't fault them for their intention.. will just question whether they are socially aware prior to singing that the plane doesn't just carry Christians.. and even some of them might want some rest at that point of time. Anyway, maybe this incident opens up possibilities of sharing love from the other religions too. Next time you will hear Buddhism chanting and I hope everyone on the plane will just keep mum till the flight ends..if got people complain, I will play the video that Christian song is allowed and why discriminate other religions. Ah.. this might win me a fortune in lawsuit.

Reactions when Daniel said the catholics are the OGs was funny. But odd because it's actually a fact which non catholic christians are not even aware. Many people just assume the bible just came to be, not knowing that the fact that it was the catholic church that put it together. The bible didn't fall from the sky, nor does the Bible ever mention anything about a Bible and what books go into it. Church history is something completely ignored by many Catholic Christians and protestants alike. But to the topic of the video, the guy was also seen singing to Ukrainian refugees. Ukrainians are orthodox Christians with beautiful hymns and chants in their worship, so for them, hearing this guy sing modern contemporary Christian English songs would probably be a turn off, or they don't understand English and they'd have no clue what this guy singing abt and probably thought he was singing some pop songs to them.

What was not covered in this discussion was that the team on the plane asked for permission, and the pilots gave it. They even made an announcement on the plane, and "everyone" clapped and welcomed them. Without this context, my first response was CRINGE. I think it would have helped if they were better singers and it was done without guitar. Also I cringe whenever I hear numbers are brought up in evangelism. I once had a "mentor" (a church assigned leader) talk to me about street evangelism, trying to convince/pressure me to do it. I have never been comfortable with that. Mostly because of my introvert nature. So whatever evangelism that I have done was more private, and among friends. It has never been a result oriented task to me. But he turned it to a numbers thing. He asked, how many people have you brought to Christ. I told him off. It does not matter the number. I don't remember seeing the bible say you have to be the ONE who brings eg. 10 people to Christ?!?! *smacks head* It's people like these who makes Christianity cringe-y. We're to love our neighbors, we're to do what we want done to us. IF I were to be "disturbed" on the plane, it better be by a damn good singer with a damn good song! >Circle of Life by The Lion King Musical Cast.

Even as they try to look at it from both sides, the chat would’ve ended immediately if majority of them are non christians nor Chinese. Religion is sacred and personal as one's interpretation can vary from another. The difference with Christianity and other religions is that other religions RESPECT the individual's space and opinion. I once saw a meme comparing religion to one's privates which is to keep it in your pants. No one asked to see it in public.

Never watched this before until now. Thanks for shining a light on this issue. May I mention that there is such a thing as Christian fundamentalism (a.k.a. evangelicalism, nowadays). It's that emotional, in your face, pushy kind of thing that is both scary and annoying because it doesn't respect those it deems bound for "hell" because they don't share their fundamentalist impulse...

Space of public needed to be respected. But I'm sure believer in christ can expresses their praise and worship to their heavenly father sharing love with all as the basis of their faith.

Religion can be both a good and bad thing. Its a powerful tool to use. It can either guide someone to a better place or be used to manipulate someone. So when someone use such a powerful thing publicly and loudly, it becomes something annoying and forced.

To me the core of this issue is that the dude in question started singing aloud in a public space. The songs sung just so happened to be Christian/evangelical in nature. My stance is that when you choose to sing out loud in a public space, you are already disturbing other people. Whatever song is involved should not affect how the action should be judged.

Evangelism to me has become "legitimate" in some way because it has been put out by religious leaders, that one has to bring people into the fold.i.e new believers, in order for them to be considered true practitioners of the belief AND for even their interpretation of the almighty, God, to recognise them..to be counted!. And I have issue with this...as if tryibg to increase the club-membership list!!...because I feel THEIR definition of how God is...is simply belittled!!..As if God..in definition of Him in any religion...as the Greatest power ever....would want humans to go tell people about Him etc as if He himself was not able to do so..!!! Much more than that I would think God..or the ALLMIGHTY would want them..the people..to do good to others etc, help the poor etc to attain better peace of mind..and than salvation. God...would not be telling people that they can "bank" in some good Karma to salvage themselves from the attrocities that they had done or CAN commit in the future. God would probably give,grant etc a good life to some one without giving the actual "Karma to goodness charge sheet" !...because to do so.. than Man would be too eager to USE that...meaning if they can always save them selves, than they can always do Bad things first!!!..than do "good things" to offset the bad!!! so No..no....sorry dear...God will decide, when and how Good=Redemption for every individual, in his own way!...Tough Luck!!! One can i suppose..prioritize that goodness at the highest level YET I don't think God would mean " you do this..so you can get this in your afterlife" etc because that would not be almighty thingy....because one should do what is RIGHT..and not expect anything in return..Because do something right, just so you can get some spiritual goodness out of it would be "gaming" the "system" called GOD,.right??.. So evangelical fervor is so wrong to me that it's like when equated to marketing, would belittle the marketing industry!! It has no place in society!..period. Just because your elders..your "family" thinks it's alright does not mean it is great..acceptable etc. To be clearer one can tell some one about doing good..but one cannot invoke that to their own concept of GOD..as if GOD needed them to do it in order for his own existence.!!! In fact I believe ..if God is THE Creator of ALL, as we would certainly think so (at least to the religious) than he could have created all as his believers etc..in one true main stream path!..But that he has not, means that other "views" paths, or religions are valid in their own terms. So we should not pick practices and culturally different practices within varied groups and use those practices to criticise and than go on to evangelise to bring the real "Truth" to them etc. Evangelism is like feeling you are Right and they, the other is wrong..and that God has a mission for you to go change the world!.. God can do it if he needs it..and even much more quickly and easily..He doesn't need mortals to do it for him...Its only man who thinks he can control others like him, from the pulpit, by invoking God etc in his words to send out people and in so doing feel more powerful. So just stop...think and go do good things without mentioning religious beliefs etc.

as a Christian. I always believe that im a Human first. If a person needs help that i can give i will give it first as a fellow Human and say nothing of my faith. Only if he ask and wish to know then i will share. To me These people are public nuisance and is shameful behavior. I hope they reflect hard. i would even call them. "Drunk on faith" behavior. Wishing everyone a good day ahead. and thank you Daily Ketchup Podcast for talking about this.

The experience jp shared is based very much on mega churches or churches that targets youth in particular? They mask it behind a 'rock concert' or an event thats got nothing to do with christianity and claims 'you dont have to stay for the worship' but you end up getting stuck sitting on the floor in midst of a few hundred people, walking off would seem impossible. I have a few anecdotes from a particular place, given me a very very bad impression.

Last time when I was walking home from school (think I was 13/14 that time), a lady approached me and ask if she can share smt w me. I said I’m not free and she said she only need 1min, so I let her share. Then she started sharing some story that’s about Christianity, while drawing some simple drawings on her notebook. After she finish her story telling, she ask if I’m int to join them and ask for my number. So I just say I will consider and gave her a fake number so she is willing to let me go.

I am a Christian living in Malaysia( if you do not know its a Muslim country) every single day in the morning ,evening and night Muslim prayers are broadcast out loud through loud speaker, even in my own home (Home = personal space) I still hear it clearly no matter sleeping eating playing or chilling, let alone when I am out (Out = public space), I could argue that I do not have a choice, that the Muslim's are forcing their religion on me but in fact I do have a choice, I can choose to ignore the prayers and treat it like a Pop song or whatever else. In fact i think the Angmo guy that was mention is someone we can learn from, he didn't like it but he didn't stood up and beat or shout or cancel the guy, he could very well understood it was a Public Space and that the singing was not doing harm to anyone but he made him feel uncomfortable (I bet in his head he was saying "oh man this again") but bearable, if the singer had just sing one song it should be fine but if the singing had not stop after a while, as a Christian even I would suggest the Angmo to ask him to stop as it was making him uncomfortable (or I would ask the singer to stop if I had knew it was making him uncomfortable), I do not know what had the church the singer Taught him but my church Taught me that we should respect other people, be kind ,understanding ,forgiving and do what that brings glory to the Lord and do not smear God's good name. An background on evangelism, evangelism is spreading the Gospel (Gospel meaning Good news), yes I agree we should live out our religion and not just speak of it ,as action does speak louder than words but because its a good news shouldn't we spread it and that's the basic of evangelism. As a Christian we have no Incentive to spreading the good news (because we already had accepted Jesus we already got our gift) unlike Insurance Agent (many of you use it as an example) they get a commission we don't. And to those who have heard things such as "you will be going to hell..." or other hurtful things, I would like to apologize and their behalf, pls forgive us for our ignorance. The bible did say if anyone accept Jesus they can go to heaven but did not mention the other way round, the bible also did mention that everyone is subjected to judgement at the end of days, which is for sure we would not know as no one been to God and came back (Jesus came back form the dead and went to heaven). To those who canceled the Christian singer I would compare them to hypocrites because they are forcing their belief ,views and ideals on the singer its like tomatoes tomatoes below is good example: Christian singer = vegans/vegetarians forcing people to stop eating meat Online Hater = like shoving steak down vegans/vegetarians' throats Long story short we all need to practice mutual respect and do not take things to the heart or personally, be forgiving and kind look on the bright side, turn a cheek. Cheers everyone^^

Looks like I am one year late on this one. Hmm, let’s see how to go from here...I have just started to discover few of this videos related to religions. Here is my take. A true religion will never try to evangelise others into their own religion. What's the point? It’s like selling membership. Most people in Singapore probably never heard of spiritual path or never really come a cross a spiritual path before. So what’s the difference between a spiritual path from a religious faith? Or shall we ask, what’s the difference between a religious teacher from a spiritual master? The difference is simple and it’s important in the topic of evangalism. Allow me to explain. Normally a religious teacher is unenlightened. Unenlightened means someone who has not yet attain the highest realisation of their religion. They are usually schlors who read a few books and understand their faith through book knowledge, maybe achieved some religious degrees of some sorts, and that’s it. Realisation, on the other hand, is the hardest thing to attain for any human being. Because true realisation take quite many lifetimes of profound cultivation to attain. One must have reach the purest mind, body and soul such that not an iota darkness exist in his/her being. Where there is no fear, no lust, no weakness of any human nature whatsoever. Very pure hearted being. Such a human being exist one in a few hundred lifetime or generation. Such that not even the Dalia Lama nor any of the Popes or any religious teacher have had attain such a state. If anyone could attain such a high state of being, he will be considered a spiritual master. So a true spiritual master is a self-realised or even a God-realised master. Someone who can see God or Buddha or Jesus, face to face. They can converse with many kinds of deities or cosmic Gods and Goddesses anytime they want. Such a master knows that Buddha is real, Jesus is real and God is also real. They are usually very intuitive. They can see ghost, spirits of any kind. They can read a person’s mind like looking at a computer screen. everything is there and more. So for a realised spiritual master, evangelism is a big joke. What is there to evangelize? They are all real. Whether it is Jesus or Buddha or Krishna, they are all very real. So your question maybe, was there such a master in our generation? Yes, in fact there was such a master. he’d composed songs in honour of Buddha, Jesus and other great spiritual masters like Sri Ramakrishna, Chaitaya, Sri Aurobindo, etc. To him, all these great masters are like family members. He’d celebrate Chrismas and Vesak day with his own students. He'd allow his students or disciples to visit temples, mosques and churches. He himslef would bow to the statues of Buddha and Jesus without any qualms. In this generation, such a master really did exist. He’d never allow his stduents or disciples to evangelise in the streets. What he’d do is to hold meditation classes so people can feel peace for themselves. And let people decide if they want to be his students or not. He never hold anyone down. His door was always open for people to leave. He don't have that many students as compared to any religion. Such a master actually did lead meditation sessions at the UN for 37 years. From 1970 to 2007. He honoured all kinds of religious teachers through different means. One of his means was to physically lift these religious teachers up in an apparatus. He wrote 1, 600books, Composed 22,000 spiritual songs, lifted 13 live elephants, lifted 8,000 people, painted 220,000 acrylic paintings, drew 16 million soul-birds as his form of praying for peace. etc, etc Here is a documentary video of one such master : www.challengingimpossibility.com

I think I would be one of the Christians who disapproves of what Jonathan did. While to us Christians, this is a brave act, and Christians should stand up for one another, in this case, I do not think this is an act that should be applauded. I've commented on this somewhere else before, similar to what one of you mentioned, the same standard needs to be applied to all religions in that case. If every religion takes such opportunity to share their faith, then we better jolly well keep quiet if another religion does this. Therefore, I do not think any religion should be allowed to do this. As one of you pointed out, there is a time & place for everything. We should be calling out errant behaviour as fellow brothers & sisters in Christ than to apply cheap grace "just because". He meant well but misguided.

There’s a verse in the Quran that says “Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.” Because it is the religion of reason and knowledge with clear evidence, we do not need to force anyone to accept our religion. God allows whoever that He wills to enter Islam.
