I still marvel at Nigel Hawthorn's linguistic and acting genius. Never get tired of watching both Yes Minister, and Yes Prime Minister. Absolutely, brilliant!

I found this today, and everything Sir Nigel said about his earlier life struck me forcefully as I too experienced all the difficulties he spoke about regarding his homosexuality at that time, especially the black depression. Such fears, such hiding from yourself and others, warping relationships. Then a liberation, but only in later life. I have always admired him as an actor, but even more deeply now as a man. Robert, 73.

I Was fortunate enough to bump into Sir Nigel in Londons west end many years ago,although I must have been terribly boring,in telling him how much I enjoyed watching Yes Minister, He was courtesy itself, A lovely man, sadly missed

Sad he wasn't able to find peace for so long. Rest in peace to a kind soul.

Possibly the best comedy to ever to be televised! Yes Minister & Yes Prime Minister are timeless and always relevant with a trio of magnificent actors whose sum is greater then the individual parts!

If ever I wanted to relax, I would see an episode or two of Yes M or Yes PM or read the book of the same. Even when reading, I saw them. They were the best and I salute all three of them and the other characters as well. Thank you all for such wonderful portrayals. From Sri Lanka.

As a long term Tokyo resident, I wish I'd known he was on stage here. My loss. It surprised me he was gay, not that it matters, but it just attests to how wonderful an actor he was that nothing about his private life came through on stage or screen. I see many actors (here in Japan) who allow too much of themselves in the character that they are portraying. A true actor plays the part, not him or herself. Sir Nigel Hawthorn is not just an actor, he's a craftsman. To my mind, the highest accolade.

Andrew Jones Productions: Sorry you missed NH in Tokyo, I saw him onstage in London a couple of times and he really was marvellous. You're right of course about his craftsmanship. I thought, however, you might enjoy seeing him in the delightful 1985 BBC adaptation of E. F. Benson's Mapp and Lucia which gives him an opportunity to actually play a gay man, and a very funny one too. ukposts.info/have/v-deo/j2J7dn2uaIqFsYk.html

Isn't it so true about all the fairies and losers in the gay bars and clubs. That has nothing to do with sexuality, that's about the sort of people who frequent those places. The straight bars and clubs have basically the same problem. If you want to meet anyone of genuine substance the last place to look for them is the bars and clubs.

Apparently some homosexuals hate the campy types too. Graham Chapman didn't like the ones who were exagerating their own stereotype, reportedly. Seems that gays are just like normal people! ;)
@irishking14147 років тому
not a great career but he was good in mapp and Lucia,him being gay the part suited him well,also a reason he always wanted the book to come to tv. Otherwise it seems he was not happy with his upbringing, well who is not?.he had a comfortable life and not a great acting caree but hey we can't have everything
@dlamiss4 роки тому
Had a brilliant career fromthe mid 70s. The sign of a great actor is taking two parts and never thinking the same actor played them.John Thaw with Regan and Morse, Ronnie Barker with Fletcher and Arkwright and Nigel Hawthorne with Sir Humphrey and George 3

@@dlamiss He also played CS Lewis on Broadway - for which he won a Tony Award. Joss Ackland played the same role in the movie from which the play was adapted. Usually the movie is adapted from a staged drama or novel. Ackland had the "edge" in the interpretation of the great theologian...being married to an extraordinary, lovely woman named Rosemary...whom he almost lost in a terrible fire...and brought a depth and level of grief deeper than Nigel... Aside from that, Sir Nigel was superb...lovable and kind... RIP...you were a friend to me...
