George Clooney's The Midnight Sky is filled with stunning images of outer space, intense scenes of survival against the elements, and many statements about the human condition. The movie follows two sets of characters amid their perilous and isolated journeys. And while they might be separated by a great distance, Clooney's Augustine and Felicity Jones' Sully have a lot more in common than either of them knows.
As their stories become intertwined throughout the movie, there are a lot of subtle details that you may have missed. Beware, spoilers ahead!
In the beginning of The Midnight Sky, after Augustine has been voluntarily left behind by the evacuating researchers, he proceeds to clean out the belongings of those who left and throws away a small statue of a wolf. If you read the book on which the film is based, Lily Brooks-Dalton's Good Morning, Midnight, you might recognize the significance of that figurine as it's something of a nod to a key scene from the book. In the novel, Augustine has several memorable encounters with arctic animals, including one in which a white wolf approaches Iris.
Augustine kills the animal to protect Iris, but she's actually very upset by this. That's because she read a field guide that indicates arctic wolves may not be aggressive to humans since they don't fear them. In a later scene from The Midnight Sky, Iris can be seen cuddling a stuffed dog, which is another nod to her compassion for the wolf.

This is a story of emotion triumphing over logic. Captain: "We're heading off to reboot the species on another planet, we need all the people we can get for genetic diversity!" Half the crew: "Nah, man, we're heading home to die! Screw the survival of the human species!" Also, I didn't get from the movie that Iris was Augustine hallucinating his own daughter; that was a "Sixth Sense" level spoiler!

I was practically jumping up and down about the crew being so irresponsible. They could do nothing substantive to help their family, or their dead crew member, but staying on the ship would have at least given the mission a *slightly* better chance at success. Once earth was toast, their loyalties should have been to their remaining crew members. Were I the captain, I would have forbidden their departure.

I appreciate details in films such as these: * His rifle was clearly 3D printed - a likely scenario for the time setting * The microwave (German brand) was set on German - signifying (along with the assorted flags there) that the base was populated with multiple nationalities. However, there were many more inaccuracies and eye-roll inducing moments, which resulted in an overly disappointing film. Also, your "small details you missed" were in the main completely wrong or completely obvious.

How come in Hollywood movies, the hero is able to survive hypothermia without shelter or resources? Augustine, already in a poor state of health, was able to hold his breath for over a minute, defy hypothermic shock and recover by himself without any other human assistance. Iris was not actually there so he couldn't even use her body heat or parka. Okay, now he's out of the water and will be able to survive for a while. Now what? Presumably, he has no compass (useless in the arctic anyway). Even if he DID have a GPS instrument, the satellite constellation was probably not being maintained so any signal would have a built-in error. There was no mention of a homing device so I was left to think he memorized the map and all landmarks along the way. I like to think that I am a good land navigator but I still need GPS, map and a compass. Not to mention dry socks and something to eat.

The film does not have much going for it. It is a memoir about a person who sacrificed his family life for a career and regrets it. There is a slight plot twist at the end that is not worth the time to watch this movie. It's a common story of not being there when your child grows up. Also, this film was not technically accurate. The film looks like there was some technical assistance from someone who knows about crewed space flight but then Hollywood set in and made stuff up that is completely wrong. The spaceship is rendered nicely but the probability of the asteroid projectiles moving slow enough to be visible to a human is almost zero. More likely 10 times the speed of a bullet or faster. It looked like Star Wars or a Disney park ride. Any impact of a projectile larger than a few grams would easily penetrate and completely destroy the spaceship. The orbital mechanics that includes people returning to Earth in "pods" from a ship using the Earth for gravity assist is impossible. It's not really about science fiction.

@@sakisgr1396 Clooney had wonderful material to work with. The video should say "Details CLOONEY missed In The Midnight Sky | Netflix.'

I literally came to the comments because I felt the same but it’s number 1 and all the other comments are giving great reviews. I came for clarity. Like I can’t be the only one lol

This movie is so boring that you can literally watch it skipping at least 50-60 min and still understanding the whole story, the script is just awful

This is, by far the worst movie I have seen in 2020. I can't believe how bad high budget SF cinema can be theese days. I would call this film: "Midsommar of 2020".
