The Old Guard's story is anything but conventional. When your team of action heroes is actually a group of centuries-old immortals, fighting to keep their powers and identities a secret, you know you're in for something special. Not only that, but The Old Guard is a surprisingly subtle action flick, full of small details that add texture to its fantastic world.
If you haven't yet, watch the movie first and see how much you notice on your own. Then, once you're immune to spoilers, come back and see what you missed. It's probably more than you expect.
The Old Guard begins with an ominous voiceover from Charlize Theron's character, Andy.
If that sounds familiar to you, then you've probably read The Old Guard before. The Old Guard movie is based on a comic book miniseries of the same name written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernández. As far as adaptations go, it's remarkably faithful. That opening monologue is lifted almost verbatim from the comics' opening panels, and much of the film's dialogue comes directly from the source material. The plot stays pretty close, too, although The Old Guard movie does throw in a couple of plot twists that'll surprise existing fans.
Of course, none of this should be a surprise. That's because, in addition to co-creating the comic, Greg Rucka also penned the screenplay for The Old Guard and was heavily involved in the production process. In fact, Rucka is having a bit of a moment in showbiz: the Cobie Smulders crime procedural Stumptown is based on another one of Rucka's books, and he's also the brains behind Kate Kane, better known as the Arrowverse's Batwoman. His influence clearly ensured that The Old Guard made its way to the screen as accurately as possible.

The movie has a lot going for it. Mostly I liked that Andy isn’t romantically involved with anyone, she cares about the world and is jaded. She deeply cared about her friend who was dropped into the ocean & I wondered if they were a couple at 1 pt but it doesn’t really matter. She’s a great character and it was nice to not see a forced romance.

After they break out of the lab you notice that the team it's been fighting together for so long that everyone knows its role, as one picks up a rifle and passes it to the one behind him as he moves forward. Andy claims to be a Scythian, a people who in turn are the source of all the Amazon legends. Women warriors were common in Scythian society (roughly 60-70 percent of all female remains excavated at Scythian burial sites have been found with weapons and/or armor interred with them). It's also well documented in ancient Greek histories that the Scythians were highly sought after as the best mercenary cavalry and horse trainers.
@torrier123

@MisterMac4321
@MisterMac4321 2 роки тому
True, but Ghezo warriors you're likely referring to are from the 18th & 19th centuries. And even had those female warriors existed during the ancient period when the term "Amazon" was first applied to women warriors, Mediterranean cultures (from whom we get all our legends of "Amazons") had no contact with sub-Saharan Africa and so would have had no knowledge of Dahomey's female warriors. You shouldn't cross-pollinate historical facts outside their chronological or geographic context.

Scytian is a culture in BC in asia and not in Greece. Yes They were the best warriors of the ancient time, male or female. They dominated / spread from central Asia to east Europe inkl. Greece and Turkey. May be this is the reason of ancient greek documentary. But they were definitely not greek roots. These are historical facts.

I think you missed some small details on the character of Andy, but they are Greek/Hellenic specific things. The first is that the axe is clearly inspired by the minoan pelekis, which is one of the symbols of Minoan Civilization the first advanced civilization in Greece/Europe (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoan_civilization). The second one is the instrument case which is use for the axe, seems very similar with the case of a bouzouki also a Greek instrument (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bouzouki). The third Andy drinks OUZO, a Hellenic alcoholic beverage (if you have not yet drink you should!). I really appreciated those easter eggs, they are testimate of the effort put into this.

It is a sweet indeed very common in Greece today (if you every been in Greece or Turkey you should definitely taste), but the origin is not well documented. Despite I am Greek, I will say that it is more likely Turkish in origin (probably created during Ottoman times after the fall of Constantinople 1453 AD). It is also amazing they mention this to be made with hazelnut (if I recall the detail correctly), as Turkey is the largest producer in the world today. I would definitely appreciate these little easter eggs if the movie was actually good, but it wasn't...It was incredibly boring and contrived, and I wasn't sold on this whole immortality thing. The protagonists didn't act or feel like battle hardened immortals, they just felt like a bunch of New Yorkers who were given toy guns and taught a bunch of flashy moves. And the terrible songs that played everytime Chalize was on screen, made it even worse. It felt like they really want to sell you on this Andy character, but I just couldn't see it at all. Her moves just weren't impactful enough, and the enemies she was fighting were being too compliant to let her pull off the the scenes! I just couldn't buy it, it didn't feel genuine at all!

Netflix released a “Old Guard Through History” on their UKposts channel detailing everyone’s backstory better and giving a more approximate date of Andy’s age. Stating that she was alone for quite a long time before she found another immortal like herself. And perhaps is even the oldest immortal.

A couple of details the Netflix Film Club missed. In the airplane fight between Andy and Nile, Andy threw several elbow punches made famous in the mixed martial arts cage fighting of the UFC. Charlize is a fan of the UFC and probably learned about the elbow punch from attending many fights. Also, Andy broke Nile's leg by blocking Nile's attempted kick. This is straight out of a famous UFC fight 162. Young challenger, Chris Weidman, blocked the kick of the then middleweight champion, the great Anderson Silva, who was champion for 7 brutal years, by breaking his shin bone on live TV. You could actually hear the bone break sitting in your living room. The replay of the blocked kick from another angle showed the bone crack and then break the skin just like the compound fracture Nile sustained.

I totally noticed that!! I thought they were gonna talk about that. I found it weird that Andy would just give up on finding her, knowing she's still in the bottom of the ocean. I may have this wrong, but isn't she the woman that appears in the last scene and says "nice to finally meet you" or something like that?

I truly loved this movie. This and 6 Underground were some of the best movies that Netflix has produced. I loved that they didn’t make her have a love interest (maybe in the next movie), that it was filled with diversity, and the action scenes were top notch. Everything about this movie was amazing and I’m so excited for the sequels. (It’s really sad that Netflix could be going out of business in a couple years

One of the first things I noticed was the name of the villain and his pharmaceutical company, "Merrick." Was this a sly reference to one of the largest pharma companies in the world, "Merck?" It appeared to me, that the signs on and around the HQ building even used the same font as Merck. Everyone is a bit pissed off with Big Pharma these days, right?

I wish that Netflix would go more into Andy's backstory or at least go looking for Quin (I am just guessing that's how you spell it) and yeah I know quin is actually alive somehow but still I fell like it would be really cool if they found the iron coffin broken out of. I also kind of want there to be more scenes with the original three ( being Andy, Quin and the other immortal that died but they never said his name) and what wars they were all in. And I am pretty sure everyone wants to know how old Andy really is.
@Whxyte
@Whxyte 3 роки тому
for a movie so hinged on fights and brutality i really hope they become more confident in their stunt acting and editing cause some scenes could really use less quick cuts & shaky cam. It'd be super cool if they could get the kind of expertise John Wick's stunt team had into the fight scenes to make it more fluid.

I wish you’d talked about things people might actually miss. Like how when Joe rips out his drawing of Nile to give to Andy, you can see a glimpse of another, earlier drawing, and if you pause at just the right moment and look closely, you can see that it’s a drawing of the helicopter from earlier in the movie, and (most likely) Nicky’s face framed by his black hood from the same day - probably at the moment of his death as it was the last thing Joe had seen before dying and the first thing he’d looked at after coming back.
