Qualcomm just announced the Snapdragon X Plus processor, an Arm-based processor made for laptops. This is a watered-down version of the already announced Snapdragon X Elite, but it offers most of the capabilities of the Elite, making it a better option for people looking to get the most performance bang for their buck. It seems that the company chooses to use 'Arm' or 'arm' as their trademark but the architecture is commonly known as ARM. (A general rule of capitalisation in English when using acronyms.) Microsoft uses 'Windows on Arm' on their website. Even though the phrase is more likely referring to the architecture rather than the company.

On the Microsoft website, both the Surface Pro 10 and the Surface Laptop 6 are both already available for purchase (arriving in 2 days with Express Shipping), and both of them use Intel CPUs, without any mention of even the option to buy them with any flavor of ARM chips. This isn't to say that they won't announce versions that use the Snapdragon X chips when those chips become available, but it's definitely not the case that they're *only* using Snapdragon.

8:16 Windows knew it way earlier when they released RT series. But, the issue is there was no any RISC processor manufacturer that was even interested in making desktop or laptop CPUs seriously. So, Microsoft had to just rely on mobile based processor with their Windows RT. The problem with Microsoft was they always focused on software and never on hardware which is why still to this date we see struggling Windows.

The X Elite is HUGE investment (literally billions) from Qualcomm in WoA. Qualcomm must finally be confident that Microsoft is finally taking WoA and getting it to a stage where it can be viable alternative for most users. I've said it before many many times, Microsoft was always the problem with WoA, hence why no other SoC Vendors were interested either (same as Google being the main issue holding back Wear OS)

So you won't be using any mainstream apps or office products and won't be gaming properly or doing video editing or anything useful to anyone who wants to do real work or anyone who has a job... Linux has always been a decade or 2 behind windows and Mac and half the hardware doesn't work or doesn't have supported drivers, same with software. It's more of a play thing for bored tech people who want to put in extra effort just trying to get a mouse to work, or their video card... I know you've got to keep it simple for the UKposts audience, but it's notable that Apple has been much more invested in the RISC architecture than has Microsoft. Mac OS was primarily RISC-oriented from v7.x all the way up to v10.x (or "OSX"). And iOS was always designed for ARM, so Apple has been primarily RISC focused from around 1991 until now, only deviating to x86 for a relatively short intermission. Microsoft has also had RISC based offerings pretty much continuously since 1993 (Windows NT v3.1 - v4.0, Windows CE, and now Windows NT v10) but they have always played second fiddle to the x86 implementations.

@andyH_England
@andyH_England 11 днів тому
Tablets and mobiles are ARM, and nobody complains? Could you ask yourself why? The reason is when they came out, the tech had moved on, and there was zero need for upgradeable RAM, storage and wifi cards. Having soldered parts is beneficial to speed, latency, size, and cost. The legacy modular complaints are because people are stuck in the Intel world, that were stuck in time for years. No one expects mobile to have modularity, and the OEMs that tried this, notably LG, though not internal modularity, failed. Your view is old, although I agree that desktop PCs should still have modularity, not ultrabooks. This is 2024, and complaints like yours are now old news.

Are you for real!!! What is the significant performance improvement that ARM chips are bringing. Most of the performance to efficiency comparisons online are done against Intel who are really bad at power consumption. Try comparing them with some good AMD u-series chips and their performance to efficiency would not look less spectacular. Even the mighty Apple M series chips are just average when they have to do general processing, which is why their paid reviewers only show tasks like Video editing where M series uses dedicated accelerators to significantly boost performance. X elite too isn't going to be any more significant, with performance around AMD's u-Series and 15-20% better battery life in general processing. While being better at some tasks like NPU. Every user has different priorities, you might prioritize that extra battery life for the freedom to upgrade and change OS. I'll prefer upgradability. My 7th gen i7 laptop from 2017 still gets the work done. With upgraded storage and RAM, it has no problem running most tasks. Even though Microsoft locked it out of Windows 11 upgrade officially but can be easily done with a simple workaround if needed. But when the Windows 10's EOL deadline reaches next year, I'll just install Linux on it and give it to my daughter. And buy a Zen 5/6 or Intel 15/16th gen based laptop. If you really think thisnis true, i hope you still use a HDD and you never ever touched those more expensive and less max capacity SSD just because it's faster... or you don't even understand the difference? For example even the cheapest Macbook have 100GB/s transfer speed memory, what is required at least 2channel DDR5 and also required a PCIe 6.0 x16 slot for the GPU, and this is the lowest priced Macbook.. the high end M3 Max with 400GB/s required a laptop motherboard with 8 RAM slots and PCIe 8.0 x16 slot for GPU.. unless you use that Windows laptop, you only compare the HDD against the SSD and complains about the price different... i mean 32GB/s limit for the PCIe 4.0 x16 GPU and also about 40-50GB/s if you only have one RAM modul is 8-13x slower like the 400GB/s..

@@TamasKiss-yk4st That's a really stupid analogy, ARM chips won't even offer 30% performance benifits that SSDs offered over HDDs. In my view, Microsoft REALLY NEEDS TO FULLY REBUILD Windows (maybe a 'New' Win12? version) that is smooth, responsive/snappy, powerful, stylish, AND VITALLY... WITH NONE OF THE ANALYTICS BLOAT BULLSH!TE !!! But... I guess, as usual, Microsoft WON'T learn by their mistakes... 😒 😎🇬🇧

ARM means advanced RISC machines, basically a processor that uses less energy, low in cost, less heat generation for light weight lasks basically used in smartphones, lablets and now basic laptops.

It’s an Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). It’s the part of your computer that runs your programs. X86 is a different ISA, that currently is in most PC’s. The advantage of Arm is lower power consumption which leads to longer battery life.

"The question is, is Microsoft going to make Windows on ARM better." then mentions how Google Chrome was ported to ARM only recently. Oh yeah. Basically, by far, the LAST major browser to support Windows on Arm; even though Microsoft have helped made Chromium compatible with Arm long ago. Let's not forget that this is Google. UKposts & Gsuite was quietly slowed down on Edge when it wasn't Chromium. There's the whole saga of stomping Windows Phone & blocking UKposts apps. The constant nagging to get Chrome long since the debut of Edge, and more. History has shown that Google & Microsoft has a big rivalry. They will try their best to hinder competitor's efforts. Not releasing Arm version of Chrome is a part of it. Since everyone uses Chrome, Google was trying to make Windows on Arm feels slow. So customers either have to choose between Arm (slow) or x86 (battery draining) Windows laptop... or they can get a fast & power efficient Chromebook. It's just that these new Qualcomm chips will likely be the turning point making Windows on Arm a real option for big part of the market, so Google have no choice but to comply. Otherwise, people might just switch to browser that supports Windows on Arm - which is every other browser, even Firefox supports it day-one.

The claim that “hardware is not the problem, but software is” is a load of bull. The reason for slow adoption of ARM on windows is all about hardware. Even on Mac, with M1, it took nearly 2 years for many creative suites to have M-native builds. The reason developers committed on putting ARM on their roadmap for M1 is b/c M1 was genuinely more powerful in every way and the benefits for spending money had big payout. On Windows, ARM offering was a poor hardware that couldn’t even compete with the low-end Intel on both performance and cost perspective. With this new offering, it will change, assuming the chips are decently powerful enough and cost-effective to target average users. You need to more research before making videos like these. “Microsoft needs to answer”, “Microsoft needs to make Windows better” is all bullshit. The third party developers like Google, Adobe has to see a hardware platform in demand before they can prioritize the work. “Windows” doesn’t need to be better. Windows on ARM already is pretty neat for developers to build cross-platform solutions. But the whole laptop-world has to push forward. This is what made all the difference for Apple.

Shame it’s not really anywhere near the Apple chips in terms of efficiency. It draws around the same as the M3 Max at ~70% of the CPU performance but nowhere near the NPU or GPU performance. Not to mention M4 is on the horizon. Good first effort, not great.

X86 has ALWAYS been faster than Apple M, their best has always lost to x86 best, but they compare it against midland x86 so they look good, Apple M needs exponentially fewer transistors to still lose. Most using laptops get them plugged in 90% of the time, longer battery life is nice, but most of us need more power when plugged in For instance, Apples BEST cpu is the DESKTOP m2ultra, with 100 billlion transistors, it loses to the amd hx, a LAPTOP cpu that only has 10 billion transistors. The xelite is crap, loses to 1 year old x86 and is only 10 percent more efficient, the xelite needs a MORE powerful ARM, not one crippled, and it needs to come in UNDER 1k, for anyone with knowledge to buy it I just ordered a faster cpu, (7940) with 40 gigs ram, 1tb SSD, $900, there's no way someone with knowledge is buying an xelite for more than that unless it has more ram and double SSD Right now, ARM is pure false marketing, it's NOT the future, an underperforming choice, not close to being performance alternative. By the way, there's x86 emulation that doesn't lose much in performance, anyone can run a normal windows on their PC arm hardware,

You buy a laptop for portability and not bringing a brick to charge plus you don't get 100% performance without plugging it in is ironic

@MrPerrisC 11 днів тому
Ken I think you missed the part where xelite is only 10 percent more efficient than the higer performing, year old x86? AND you don't know, run your laptop off the wall so you' don't burn through charge cycles? with my use I'd need an M battrey every year, on the wall whenever I can,, once in three On equal performance, out of a ten hour battery x elite gets 11. ya, that's groundbreaking, right? BTW, by the time xelite is actually available, so will zen 5 or 6 on more efficient NM than now, making it even more performant and efficient, I mean xelite loses already, imagine when it faces equally current x86 And I suppose carrying a gan charger is tough on some, it's nothing to most, I add a battery to facilitate even longer life, this is somehow not portable for arm promoters I guess Thanks for the discussion and this is the last of my contributions. I'm just adding balance to the "exaggerated, (false) marketing of both arm and xelite, so peeps don't buy the hype blinded, just wait till it's actually released, to find out if it does what the marketing claims (it won't unless what they release is better than the current samples demonstrate) Cheers

Ehh, no, because you seem to be comparing max performance vs max performance, which isn't the goal, it's max performance efficiency tradeoff. Try finding a Windows laptop that uses x86 chips with the same performance and battery life as an M3 Max Macbook Pro. Good luck

Pro tip, dispense with the kid stuff if trying to make a valid point it's more inducive to intelligent conversation rather than digressing into insults hardly anyone needs a laptop more than a few hours off grid, those that do, ya, go ahead and get that second rate cpu, it's best for you. I get best for me, which (happens to be) best performance, I get my tablet when I need battery life btw, NOBODY should have their laptop unplugged when a plug is there, unless of course they like paying for new batteries Thanks for the discussion, I'm out
