The Raspberry Pi Zero and the new Raspberry Pi Zero W are amazing little microcomputers that come at a rock bottom price - 5 dollars for a Pi Zero and 10 bucks for the WiFi & Bluetooth equipped Pi Zero W. But one of the things that both of these little miracles lack is a 40-pin GPIO header.
If you're going to add a Raspberry Pi HAT to your Pi Zero or Pi Zero W then you’ll need to solder in a GPIO Header yourself. It’s a pretty simple job, the hardest part is getting the header in straight and supporting the whole assembly while you make the 40 solder connections.
That’s where this Quick Tip comes in. I’ll show you a way to hold the header and the Pi in place while you solder the whole thing together. Unlike some other instructions, I DO NOT recommend using a solderless breadboard to hold the header, for reasons that I explain in the video. The method I’ll show you is quick and efficient and will ensure that your Pi Zero GPIO is installed correctly every time.
So warm up your soldering iron, get out your Pi Zero and a header strip, and follow along!

When doubling up single row headers, be aware that sometimes they can be 'keyed'. The black plastic piece that holds the pins can be convex on one side and concave on the other. This allows them to kind of snap together. Orienting them incorrectly can spread apart the rows to and cause them to be misaligned.

Fantastic! I'm waiting on a Pi Zero and my soldering skills are mediocre at best, thanks for the reassuring video and the great tip!

I thought this was a really good video. But my main takeaway which is probably lesser than the whole -> I will forever be calling my fan a fume extractor from this point forward. OB PROTIP: You also might want to use shims to ensure you got the pins laying flat in the short (width) direction as well. You don't always need it, but if the zero lays exactly right on one axis, but off on the other, you end up with things being less than square. Shims are good for avoiding that.

This is exactly what I needed to see to add the GPIO header to my raspi zero w. Thank you!

Brilliant!!! Fixturing is what divides the fabricator from the guy assembling stuff. I swear, if I watch enough of these vids, one of you guys is gonna tell me how to build a working time machine that generates winning Powerball numbers...

I think a Time Machine is a bit too much for an Arduino - perhaps I'll use a Raspberry Pi!

I don't know if PIs are static sensitive but I think you are wise to use a wrist strap.

Why the soldering iron doesn't burn the Raspberry Pi Zero circuit board? It's very hot, isn't it?

What kind of solder and what temperature did you use? How was your header oriented (long pins up)? Just some questions that a total noob would watch this video for
@gsegallis
@gsegallis 3 роки тому
You should move the header closer to the edge of the perfboard so that the miniHDMI is out from under the perfboard. The mHDMI connector is taller than the plastic part of the header so the Pi will not be lying parallel to the perfboard and the header will be crooked if you have the perfboard extending out.

Dave, thanks, love your channel. I realize the age of this video based on your price references, but still relevant content. I have a couple of questions. Which side should the pins protrude for a hat? Does it matter? Would I be wrong to use an extra long female 40 pin facing the main side of the board and for versatility let the extra long male pins protrude out the bottom of the board? The next question is about solder paste, is it appropriate or adverse to use solder paste when securing the header pins? Sorry if these noob questions are elementary, but I trust your expertise and experience. Thank you Sir!

Andy Timmons the adafruit website it has all the pis and everything you will use with them for cheap. It's 5 dollars for the zero and 10 for the zero w

Andy 10 US dollars is the retail price of the Pi Zero. As Angry Piper mentioned you can find them at that price at Adafruit, also the Pi Hut has them as well. If you are outside of the US then try Pimoroni in the UK, that''s where I pick mine up.
