I know that's a smart observation, it reminds me of a play by Pirandello, School for Scandal .. satirical, intrigue with every one running in and off the stage, bumping into the perpetrators and pretending they had not been a part of the hatchlings of intrigue; making it confusing as the stage rotated at the same time... a sort of 18th century who dunnit.

Primary concern for group leaders is to keep their groups, to stay in power. These groups are not about politics as much as they are about just good old self-esteem. They like being in a group, carrying guns, etc... As soon as authorities start getting serious they stand down. The FBI going full out on arresting people, getting mountains video from years of them associating with different people is pretty scary to all these groups. That's going to make recruiting more difficult.
