I have an idea for true crime, whenever that will be again!! There was a guy named Joe Blackburn that lived near my county in Northern Wisconsin who was murdered (shot, I think) in 1897 on his doorstep, with absolutely no reason as to why. He lived way out in the country, and was well respected by the Ojibwe for his trading and kindness. The police only ever found one or two footpaths, but it led out to the middle of the frozen Totagatic River that was beginning to melt. Joe Blackburn was known to have a lot of cash hidden away somewhere on his property, and he was even dug up in the mid 40s because the people in his town were so sure of it (they found nothing). My great-grandpa was one of the men they hired to dig him up. Joe was also known for the way he buried his wife, Mary Lightbody Dingley, after she died. In Ojibwe culture, you bury them above ground and put a wooden little house over them, but Joe put it a few feet away from his house and he would cry and wail in front of it, kissing her face, and sleeping next to it for some nights. There’s so much to go on this cold case, I hope this might be considered someday!!
