Because he already knew from his experience it would be very hard to be a professional football player. Sonny really wanted to be one, so his father decided to help and support him. Go do your own thing based on your own culture. Korean culture like all other cultures is unique. This is not strict for Koreans. And Son might not be in current position without his support, living abroad alone in such a long time without any language and mental readiness at the beginning.
