I lived next to the Columbia River. It is beautiful but it can be wicked if your not careful. I'm sorry to hear about your father. But he went doing what he loved. I can remember fishing the Columbia from shore and watching an eagle take my catch. Loved it.

My wife caught alot of 9.5 inches in the third bay out near stow, Lyndhurst, Euclid, ec, Brunswick, and lake woods. You got to throw small ones away though. But I think her q cadtee had like 137 thousand 🦀. Then they came to cud and had like 4 or 5 in like three seconds off the algea grass with b and b . They didn't even charge but they had more work. "Drop pot in first, and then let the line out until the pot hits the bottom" - I though that this would work, but ofcourse i found out that current also needs to be accounted for. the current pushed my buoy over, so the line was going about a 45 degree angle up from the pot instead of straight up... since this distance to the surface was greater and also greater than my line, the buoy submerged by about 20 feet! i was able to recover it a few days later at low water slack. lesson learned!

Easy rule of thumb. Add 20’ to your line to account for current up to 100’ then adjust to 20% extra of depth to line ratio. high current areas use a double float and even up to 30% extra line. If the float goes under it will soak up water and compress and not come back up. Use two that way if on goes down you will still have a float at surface. Also crab move with water temp and food source. Weather makes dirty water, means camo for movement and brings in food particles. Also Dungy like sandy/mud bottom mix, prime habitat.

BlackRockBrewing - I hear you man.This is the first video by Fisherman's Life that I've ever seen, so I don't know the entirety, nor even from whence he hails, but I subscribed, so I'm sure I'll find out. He seems be following the rules and honestly, I didn't see him do too much stupid or anything illegal. I don't even know what the law is wherereverer, but non-commercially, crabbing for Blueclaw Crabs here in the Northeast, we always return the females, even when keeper size, as it just makes good business sense to do, for next year. He seems to always be wearing a life jacket and has a wrist band kill switch to his boat engine, so if for some reason he gets knocked overboard, hopefully he'll be able to swim back to his boat. The only thing that scared me was when he said he didn't have his knife. It's called a 'pocket' knife, for a reason. I keep two, one in either front pocket. One to use, one to loose, or one to quick hand a rookie, who didn't have his when asked, which was enough to get you fired, where I worked. One reminder to everyone, whenever you 'get into' anything, make sure you have your knife on the inside, of sleeping bags, tents. When in a Hazmat suit, Survival suit, Fire fighting gear or the like, you should always have one knife in the inside pocket, and one in the outside pocket. Don't forget either. There have been two times that I nearly died because I was stupid enough to forget one or the other. So far, I've never forgotten either again (and it's been about 20 years). As well, the overall production qualities of F'sL, being basically a One Man Band, in terms of actually recording anyway, is quite high. Clearly enjoyable. As a viewer, I feel as if I am a minor helper, just taking it all in, trying to be both helpful when needed, but out of the way when not; which is a rare talent that Captains often have, when serving as a deckhands, which they often do, to my surprise. I have always enjoyed the fact that I never (after that first time) had any desire to paint the town red. Saved me a lot of money and heartache compared to many my age. I'm now 73 and like you, crippled up. My heart Dr. told me not to expect to see 2018. It's now March 2022 so I must be living on borrowed time.
