England are third in the FIFA World Rankings, are the only team in the world to have reached the last eight at their last three major tournaments, and have arguably the best player in the Bundesliga, La Liga, and the Premier League this season.
So why aren't they universally considered one - if not the - best team in the world?
Well, in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the strength and depth at Gareth Southgate's disposal, their chances at Euro 2024, and the narrative at home and abroad which surrounds the England national team.

The 2018 World Cup was very different because people were humbler. No one expected us to do much in the tournament. The change from 2010 to 2018 was palpable - we learned a lot from Iceland, but in general our struggles had gone on for too long. Also we had some dross in that squad - Loftus-Cheek, Alli, Rose, Welbeck, Lingard, Delph, Ashley Young, Phil Jones (though I feel mean for saying him). Southgate deserves much more respect for that semi final alone.

I'll give credit to to Gaz where its due for his leadership in the 2018 campaign, especially after low expectations from absolute disappointment from 2014 and 2016, but I'll hold the Croatia match against him for as long as I live. Surely time will and has lightened the weight of contempt I hold against him, but it will be held in my heart regardless. Don't know what he was thinking in his right mind when he kept Sterling on to try and flop for a pen (like come on Southgate, you know he's not even going to try and get a shot off) when Vardy was clearly the hero England and English Football had called for in that moment. Unless by some circumstance only known to the squad where Vardy was not match fit for the day or the week, Jamie was clearly the fox to bust Croatia's box.

I call it toxic expectation. Expecting to win but then venomously scolding the players/manager when they don’t. This for me is the reason why we have failed to win anything yet. The English media exacerbate it, but a certain portion of England “fans” are to blame. Edit: I think part of the reason Southgate has done so well is because expectation dropped a lot after the dark days of Euro 2016 and because he came in as a temporary manager, his role carried much less pressure. Expectation is going to be sky high again this time because of the insane crop of talent we have. Let’s get behind our boys!!

The english calender with their 20 Team league, 2 Cup Competition and at least one team advancing to the Champions League Semi Final is still much harder, then the German 18 team 1 Cup with no rematches. And it is way too common sight, that the best players of the Premiere League have a disapointing tournament during the summer. The obvious example is Kevin de Bruyne, who scored a combined 3 goals in 22 World Cup and Euro games.

@@PassivesAbseits And? I never get these BS arguments, Arsenal have a 25 man squad, every single player is full international. They also have players like Tierney, Sambi Lokongo and Tavares out on loan, more internationals who are good enough to start for PL teams. Then they have players like Patino who is a first teamer in the championship on loan, then they have an under 21 squad, with another around 20 players and another like 10 players out on loan. They have one of the best youth academies in the country, if not the world, get hundreds of millions in TV money, champions league money, gate receipts to pay all these multiple talented players, they have people like Smith-Rowe barely getting a game and he'd be a key player for half the PL. and you are telling me they cant fucking field a decent team in OOOH two cup competitions without tiring their players? , MY HEART BLEEDS. It's complete nonsense, rotate and stop bloody complaining. Big clubs moaning about too many games is complete BS, they easily have huge squads with talented players in every position and academy graduates from good academies desperate to play and then they complain about the League Cup? it's hilarious. The reality is all these top managers just want to play their best teams every game and win every game easily. You get that Arsenal's budget is probably higher than half the Bundesligas COMBINED budget, the players in the top 6s U21 teams would be starting in most European top 5 league teams, some would probably start for the top teams in those league and they dont get a kick in PL teams.
@PassivesAbseits
@PassivesAbseits 2 місяці тому
@@tajj7 Well... the problem is, that Arsenal cant really afford to bench Saka. Here is the problem: You need at least 86 points to win the Premiere League. And that is the lowest estimated number, with the lone exception being Leicster. It is more likely, that 90 points won't be enough. So you can't really afford to leave any points at the table. A random tie at Bournmouth might cost you the title. Arsenal basically put themselves out of the title race by losing against Fulham and West Ham. They need to play a flawless rest of the season and even that might not be enough. The same goes for the Champions League Knock Out stage. And in the Group Stage or the Cup Competition, the managers rotate as much as they can. But it is an undeniable truth, that the competition in the Premiere League is tighter and harder, then in any other league. But even if I grant you your point, and the managers should rotate more. That doesn't fix the problem, Gareth Southgate will face, when the Managers refused to rotate. He will still pay the price for the Premiere League season.

Just thought id mention. Despite us having statistically more chances and possession than france in the 2022 world cup match. They looked a lot more threatening, confident and clinical going forward. They played with a calmness and confidence that we lacked, as we visibly rushed in possession and attack. Lack of mental strength and that innate drive to win is what crippled our previous teams. Although I have hope when I watch bellingham. He has a really elite mentality for his age, as he matures this will improve even more. I honestly love being a supporter of a smaller national team (Denmark). Because we are a small country with a relatively weak domestic league, the expectation is always to be an underdog, even with a pretty good squad. This means that whenever the team does well the entire country (even non-football fans) really get together, because we know that we are exceeding expectation. The problem people externally have with England fans is not that you are excited about the team being good. It is more so the ignorance and disinterest displayed towards other nations and leagues, and the feeling of entitlement towards winning the big trophies, without having any recent history to back it up. (Though there are of course also many very reflected and intelligent England fans)

The problem with the outside perception of England is that we’re not but many fans practically give fellatio to their team’s foreign players and that’s embarrassing. And it’s commonly dismissed that we take no interest in other leagues but that’s simply not true, think of how much this channel does and it’s English, Tifo do and they’re English, and there’s several like them. And it’s not aided by how anti English other nations are - one of the most anti English managers in the league (with no good reason) is Thomas Frank, a Dane.

I am from Georgia. After my country I am England and MU fan since 1997. This England looks best for me. Key factor is Declan Rice. Since Paul Ince England never had elite defensive midfielder (N6) and that created disbalance in their play. So called Golden Generation could never play dominant football against top teams due to mentioned reason. Both Gerard and Lampard played at N8 in their prime. Both of them had two elite holding midfielders behind them in the club (Alonzo-Mascerano in Liverpool and Makelele-Essien in Chelsea). Their duo was disaster as non of them were good in doing simple but very important things for build-up. Therefore, against top teams England typically would try to score goal and immediately give possession to the opponent. Remove Declan Rice from this squad and you will get good old England :)

Really interesting video, especially the part about fewer star players in modern teams. I'd argue it's not that teams back then were just generically better, rather that the way modern teams function leaves less room for players to show off. Everyone's a cog in the machine now, bought to fit a role pre-defined role in a unit. There are a couple of genetic freaks around like Haaland and Mbappe, but for the most part, defenses are better organised, the space is being constantly squeezed, and so many teams deploy low blocks that most games consist of pass-pass-pass-whip it in-head it out. So no wonder we point at attacking players no longer given space and time to perform and say they're worse. Equally, we look at defenders rarely forced to make desperate tackles out of position and say they're not as good as they used to be. And you very rarely see attackers shoot from miles out either anymore. They get it into the box, they pull it back, and someone gets an easy tap in.

And when you look at the important matches in this time there are always at least one or two players missing from injury or suspension. There was no adequate replacement for Rooney for example. Even with talent it’s hard to win. Think about teams with loads of talent that don’t accomplish much. For me, especially in international play, it comes down to how fast a “team” can become a Team. Meaning how quickly can they learn/relearn their game and position in relation to players and teams that they have little to no experience with. Argentina gelled at the right time and their star talents were able to shine. Like Alfie said paper teams don’t win championships, it’s their chemistry and luck because at this level we know they are all talented. Japan is/was in my opinion the best example of this. They played as a cohesive squad and we saw what “lower” quality players can achieve. Leave the egos, shield your players as best you can from the media I think England could do some real damage.

@HITCSevens I think your predicted Euros XI is very similar to what we will see next summer at Euro 2024. The keeper and the backline are spot-on. With regards to the three midfield spots, Rice and Bellingham are obviously nailed, but the remaining slot is very controversial. Alexander-Arnold is the most talented footballer but is it tournament-pragmatic, is he defensively good enough? Phillips' form just isn't good enough. Gallagher could be the guy Southgate ends up turning to. Upfront Kane and Saka are obviously nailed, but I definitely see Foden coming in for Rashford given their respective seasons. Foden, Bellingham, and Rice (whom i'm curious why you would not include lol) are amazing, but there is in my opinion barely anyone capable of backing them up to a reasonable level, besides in Foden's position, which isn't even very sustainable as overly aggressive football is very risky in international football - hence why he doesn't start much. Rice's best backup is Phillips, who rode bench for ages before being loaned out unceremoniously to West Ham, and while he can be good on a good day is nowhere near the same level; and the same is true for Bellingham's position, where the best backup is maybe Mount? Who has his own injury issues. 442 would be able to reduce our reliance on them specifically. Alternatively a 3-5-2 so we can ignore the fact that we have not got a single good LB lol.

Honestly the only real issue with England and Southgate in general is the insistence upon keeping Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson in the squad as starting options, and not giving Fikayo Tomori a real chance. I'm honestly surprised that many of of the young players (especially the attackers) with national team eligibility elsewhere don't make the switch. I'm just going to list U25 guys here. Players on the fringe with Senior Caps: -Eberechi Eze (Nigeria) -Jadon Sancho (Jamaica) -Tyrick Mitchell (Jamaica) -Callum Hudson-Odoi (Ghana) -Eddie Nketiah (Ghana) Uncapped at Senior Level who could feasibly switch if a federation makes a strong push: -Kobbie Mainoo (Ghana) -Anthony Gordon (Scotland) -Noni Madueke (Nigeria & the Netherlands) -Morgan Gibbs-White (Jamaica) -Tino Livramento (Scotland & Portugal) -Angel Gomes (Portugal) -Stephy Mavididi (DR Congo) -Cameron Archer (Jamaica) -Max Aarons (Jamaica) -Archie Gray (Scotland) -Divin Mubama (DR Congo) -Jarell Quansah (Scotland, Ghana & Barbados) -Ethan Nwaneri (Nigeria) -Micah Hamilton (Jamaica) -Dane Scarlett (Jamaica) -Carney Chukwumenka (Austria & Nigeria) -Omari Forson (Ghana) -Samuel Edozie (Nigeria) -Liam Delap (Ireland) -CJ Egan-Riley (Ireland) -Archie Brown (Jamaica) -Dennis Cirkin (Ireland) -Jesurun Rak-Sakyi (Ghana) -Shola Shoretire (Nigeria) -Djed Spence (Jamaica) -Josef Bursik (Czechia) -Teden Mengi (Angola) -Hayden Hackney (Scotland) -Ben Wilmot (Ireland) -Josh DaSilva (Angola) -Malcolm Ebiowei (the Netherlands) -Ethan Laird (Jamaica) Like Jamaica could be completely demoting Mexico into the mid tier of CONCACAF if they were able get just 50% of the english players with Jamaican ancestry to switch. Scotland would be a surprisingly deep squad with a real future. Ireland would get some much needed depth and the biggest nations in Africa (DRC, Nigeria, Ghana) would gain some quality depth and some hot prospects.

A lot of those guys have a chance to go on to play for England, a lot of them are like in their teens or early 20s, like I think Livramento is good enough to play for England even though lots of competition at right back, Liam Delap is only 21, he could easily follow a path like Kane or say Toney, start banging some goals in the championship, get the right move to a PL club and he could be an England regular at like 25 say. Once Kane goes the striker spots are more open as well so lots of chance for a young striker to breakthrough over the next 4-5 years as Kane ages out of the team. Left back and centre back spots are up in the air. You are more looking at guys that are already like 24-25, in positions crowded with good players, like yeh Hudson-Odoi can;t see him playing for England again though I think he turned down Ghana to go to the World Cup IIRC. I suppose at the end of the day a lot of these guys are born in England, brought up in England, speak English, and probably grew up supporting England and idolising England players as kids, so to suddenly switch to a country they might only have a loose connection with through grandparents or one parent etc. might not sit well with them mentally. I mean are some of these players who switch not just really playing international for the sake of it? rather than being passionate about it and desperately wanting to give their all to their country, because it is not really their country, I don't know. I think personally if I was a pro footballer I'd struggle to be that motivated to go play for Ireland or Scotland or something, I'd probably just prefer to have summers off and support England in tournaments.

@@gyorkshire257 Penalty xG is so extreme and comes from sufficiently rare events that including it makes it a much worse indicator of dominance. It's the correct metric for measuring finishing/ignoring shooting randomness, but non-penalty xG gives a far better sense of which team threatened more. To illustrate, I'm going to show how even a team with ideal conditions (massive dominance and lots of pens) would still have their xG fail to accurately reflect their dominance as well when pens are included. This is a bit long, I tried to be as clear as possible which led to a lot of detail. Also I was having fun writing about it lol. Man City won the most penalties in the Prem last year, 10. Assuming this is equal to their expected number of penalties (it's most likely a mild overcount, because topping a leaderboard for a volatile stat usually means positive variance, even when they should be expected to have the most based on quality) then at 0.8 xG per pen, that's 8 xG total, or around 0.22 per match. Their dominance is at least roughly similar throughout most of their matches, and so would predict a narrow range of penalty xG that's "deserved" in each match, when we only consider dominance rather than specific incidents: I'd guess there wasn't a match all season where that value would be above 0.35. As a result, in any match in which they do get a penalty, their xG would be overstating their dominance by at least 0.4, and most of the time it would be substantially more. On top of that, non-penalty xG includes a huge chunk of the signal from winning penalties, because better teams are both more likely to win penalties and more likely to have more non-penalty xG. With enough data, you could run a regression on this, and I think you would get a ridiculously high correlation between the two - winning penalties is a distinct skill, but not typically a particularly extreme one afaik. (The corollary of City's - or another top team's - dominance being the least over-measured when they get penalties is, of course, that it's the most under-measured is when they don't, but this has a smaller maximum effect on a given match, because penalties occur less frequently than once every two games: if City play four games and get one pen the value is .2 too low 3 times and .6 too high once, while for a 1 penalty per 10 games team it would be .08 too low 9 times and .72 too high once. Obviously the gap could be greater with multiple penalties in a match, but it would still be lower for a better team than for a worse one awarded the same number)

Bearing in mind the limited amount of games in International competitions, Southgate’s final picks has to be risk averse. Great video, and you make some excellent points. But you said it best when you mentioned how it's Southgate's job to find how to put his best players on the pitch. Foden is clearly an elite level world talent and although it's fair to say Bellingham is the 8 he would play, with a little bit of technical nouse, a system can be created that provides that balance. Southgate, taking a page from Pep's book, could make a system with two 8s, and two wingers. It would require a bit more defensive fragility, and likely Alexander Arnold, Kyle Walker, Chillwell, or Shaw would have to give up their spot for a someone who might not be as good (Tomori or Colwill) but will be able to play both down in the full back position but also centrally. Hence why a lot of people thank Southgate for what he is done, but call for him to be removed for a manager with better tactical accumen.

The sheer depth they have at their disposal almost makes Southgate return to his trusted XI each time, because the factors for error are much less likely. As much as I think the likes of Gomez, Guehi, Branthwaite, and others deserve to be ahead of Maguire, Maguire is an experienced and trusted lever in Southgate’s machine. I think the problem for England is that while Southgate can elevate your floor, he does have a ceiling when it comes to international football. And you simply can’t afford a margin like that to creep in when you’re up against the most stacked national team of all time like France, a tenacious Croatia, and up against a tactically comfortable Italy. Yes, England have been knocked out by the top teams of most tournaments, but I feel like England’s setup hasn’t aided either. Again, while you rarely get embarrassed by Southgate, he lacks the tactical nous to outplay a Deschamps or a Mancini. If I were England I’d think of asking Howe if he has any plans after Newcastle.

Very well put. He's got us out of our rut. I even think in general the media (myself and my boys which is anecdotal) are much more behind the team than we used to be. We had to strong arm him into bellingham, Abrahams & Sancho (who was top tier at the time). One thing other nations have over us is playing in multiple nations. For us to win he really needs to be a bit more of a maverick and bring players like tomori (and maybe even RLC) in. The reliance on Kalvin Phillips, Maguire & Mount will be to our detriment once it gets to knock out phase

Maguire is a better player than every single one listed. Only Branthwaite looks like he could one day be as good. That’s more a compliment to Maguire - against unprecedented hate, he’s consistently been a solid and at times excellent defender for United.

Howe is of more service to England managing Newcastle players week in week out than the England team.

I wouldn’t replace Southgate - and while your point is better explained than most, I can’t help but feel you’re riding the anti Southgate train rather than knowing we need to get rid. I view him as a valuable asset to the side.

Also Southgate is what we need - a coach not a manager. The best 2022 WC manager was Flick and 🇩🇪 went out in the group while 🇦🇷 coach had never managed before.
