Kuzhi Paniyaram is a round dumpling from south India made with a spiced fermented rice and urad dal batter. It is a common breakfast item made with leftover idli/dosa batter mixed with cooked onions, whole spices and aromatics. It is perfect as a snack or a meal served with a spicy chutney, such as kaara chutney.

i cant get over all the people defending this dude and being like "why do you have to make everything about race? You cant expect everyone to like indian food." its not that he didnt like it, but its that he didnt even try it. He's allowed to have his own tastes, but to not even try it after his daughter went thru the effort of learning the recepie and making it for him is just sad.
@Acesspaded
@Acesspaded 11 місяців тому
I didn’t get that really from actual criticism that was giving. People are more put off by the fact this was turned into a race thing. Like the poster legit turned it into a race thing when she didn’t want to. Like she said he wanted something European and how he probably didn’t like it soley based off it being Indian food. What if there was another reason why he didn’t want to eat it. There’s a difference between being a dick about food types, and then there’s picky eaters. He’s still a jerk for not atleast trying to make it. But she should have also given a heads up just in case he wouldn’t like it.

Freaked out, really? Sounds like the food version of OCD. Im being serious, sometimes trauma or certain events from our childhood can make us attach ourselves to a certain food. And other times, we're just picky, lol. I'd hope in either situation, (especially a special event like this short, visiting a child you havent seen in a while & the meal has already been cooked in your honor) the person could attempt to try maybe 1 new food a year. And I mean try, like tasting a few bites to be polite. It sucks to say you won't try a food based purely off its appearance or an aversion to another culture.

I've taken the time to learn so many Indian dishes, and my in-laws will barely touch a mashed potato, salmon, or other typically western food. I finally had to tell her it really hurts my feelings if she takes a meal I cooked for them and literally re-cook it differently in the South Indian way right in front of me. She stopped doing that, but they won't try a lot of western dishes so I have to stick to more Indian recipes. People like what they like. She should have also cooked something European as a backup. I am sure he would have eaten some cheap sandwich than the questionable looking concoction in front of him. Remember she is not feeding a new variation of a food they already know, she is straight up hitting at the maximum with an entirely new dish with a completely different flavor profiles and culture. While I agree, southeast Asian food is amazing, not everything is meant to be racist or degrading, even if he could have used better words to describe the food When I moved from my home country to a European country, I absolutely hated the food. I thought it looked ugly and refused to eat it. It took me years to get used to eating soup and the new flavour combinations and styles. Now that I have moved again, I miss that food. Because of this experience, I am a lot more open to trying new foods and flavours. If you grew up with certain foods it's hard to try or get used to new flavours, especially if the person isn't young anymore. While they should learn to choose their words better, it's not always meant as bad. Okay two things: You're totally right, I love Indian food it's so frickin good, literally one of my favorites. I'm white, but I really appreciate diverse types of food because I grew up in a very passionate cook's house who loves to make a diversity of foods from all sorts of places. #2, if something doesn't look appetizing to you, there's nothing wrong with that. I doubt he knew that the food was specifically Indian and was being racist. Some people haven't had the exposure to other types of foods and it's not inherently their fault if, because of that lack of exposure, it doesn't look appetizing. It's annoying when people refuse to try things, but at the end of the day you're not a bad person if a foreign food looks weird to you. Everyone grows up having different levels of diversity and different cultures. People preferences are shaped around what they're used to, and it's completely human to feel more comfortable with things you're familiar with.

My husband is from Bangladesh and when we visited, his aunt cooked for us every day. Even though the food was a little above my spice tolerance I loved getting to try new fish and expand my knowledge of Indian/desi cuisine. It was a huge privilege to have home cooked meals and be looked after that way.

It’s so sad when people are so full of pre assumptions that they miss out on delicious foods. I still remember the first time I ate Nepalese food (palak paneer to be exact) and I loved it so much. Nowadays it’s a monthly treat for myself that I go and order from my favorite Indian restaurant

I as Bengali have been dying to try South Indian food. Especially the rice based dishes. Anything with coconut in it. Some of it looks like why Bengalis but more colorful.

Indian food is so underrated. It's so good and diverse. Lots of flavor with something for everyone. Curry and Tikka Masala are my favorites. But this looks great.

People have their food preference. I personally don't like Indian food (more specificly I don't like cumin and turmeric and it is hard to find an Indian dish without them, when I was on the look for it Reddit said I should just give it up), it not gonna make a bad person out of anybody tho. You can still appreciate and love other cultures and it not gonna make the food bad, simply you just don't like it.

You can try sweets and desserts. They don't have cumin or turmeric. Jalebi, gulab jamun, kulfi , ras malai are just yummy

Honestly all food can be adjusted to your taste. You don't have to follow the recipe exactly. Do you know the number of varieties of sambar there are?

I haven’t had the pleasure of trying South Indian food yet but it always looks so flavorful! Unfortunately (I love them but) my family are very picky and not very explorative when it comes to any foods that aren’t the typical American/European or Latino dishes so I understand your friend lol
