Those arms, they got to have so much trust in their ability to aim that bad boy on the way down. A couple inches to a foot one way or the other, and it seems like it’ll be a rapid disassembly of both rocket and catcher

Considering that the ultimate goal is to be as reusable as your common jumbo jet, even at this early date trying to re-use SN15 definitely is a huge step in the right direction. Get your engineers to crawl all over the sucker, make sure you get every last bit of data from it's onboard equipment, tighten all bolts, and send her up again and see just what parts still perform fantastic and which ones might need more engineering to handle the kinda cadence SpaceX ultimately wants outta these things. Like all the other prototypes, even if she fails on the second flight, she'll succeed...since it'll give all sorts of data to make things even better next go around.

I think the key to reuseability is reliable engines they are not there yet, but then it is early in this design cycle.

One of my favorite concepts for a SS mission is an Expendable Deep Space Variant that's packed with 100t+ of instrumentation and landers as an exploration probe platform to basically carpet bomb an object of interest like Titan or Europa with landers to do decades worth of rover missions concurrently paired with the most scientifically dense orbiter we've ever seen.

can't see them on time. new gse tanks needed aren't ready and look weeks out. the olp table isn't finished, and when are the prefabs for the tower going to be stacked up? all the new hardware needs to be tested and certified, which also adds days. launch around wintertime seems more realistic, in light of severe summer storm season, and tourist season. oh, and where are the raptors they need for orbital flight? too much infrastructure to finish first. sure, refly 15 (and 16) at least once, but 20 (with full stack) will need more time and build out.

I'm really excited to see how robust their heat tile design ends up being. Running stainless steel means they don't need to provide quite as complete of protection as the aluminum space shuttle. Stainless is so much more robust.

Is it possible the booster will actually land on a drone ship/oil rig in the ocean? The filing specifically says “Starship splashdown” for starship but “Booster touchdown” for SH. Could OCISLY or JRTI support a SH?

considering this is still prototyping and nothing is certain, just for safety might be best if they both splash down. At least for the first orbital flight ( and first flight of the Booster segment no less. ), I mean consider how far spread and hard to clean up SN11 has been, then imagine something even bigger and more energetic and high enough to cover a more populated area! Better safe than sorry in these early stages than not, cause I can only imagine the kind of red tape ( justified and otherwise ) that SpaceX might get drowned in otherwise.

@@WTC2014 there were MK1-4. MK1 was the starship in the starship presentation in 2019, and it was destroyed during a cryo test. MK2 was being constructed in Cocoa, Florida, but it got scrapped. MK3 was SN1. MK4 was also being constructed in Cocoa, Florida, but it got scrapped.

@@johnlinneman2779 Yeah, that was my point. You remember, New Shepard made its first flight, above the Karman Line, and landing, a few weeks before the first successful landing of Falcon 9. Jeff tweeted out to Elon, "Welcome to the club," when the Falcon 9 landed, as though the two events were particularly comparable. I think nit would be very fine for Elon, who has launched three crews into orbit to the ISS, and has contracts for four more, plus two tourist flights, one to the ISS one for an independent orbital mission, to say the same to Jeff when he finally manages a manned *sub* orbital flight. But I'm just mean that way.
