Dive with a sperm whale and join the hunt for the giant squid. This amazing experience is based on real scientific data taken from digital tags (D-tags) placed on sperm whales. From Search and Destroy, Whales Tohora exhibition

Man, I can't imagine what life as a sea creature is like. I see open water and I'd be terrified to be in it. Being unable to see the bottom, just the black abyss, absolutely chilling to behold. It's not really even what lives down there that scares me. I guess you'd have to be the biggest animal on Earth to be brave enough to hunt in the black depths.

It is called sperm whale because the sticky white substance in its 'melon', the fatty tissue that makes up its forehead, was originally mistaken for sperm. More info on how they use their melon for echolocation can be found on the Whales Tohora exhibition website.

It is called echolocation. Toothed whales can use echolocation to hunt their prey. They send out high frequency clicks then listen for their echo as they bounce back from objects. You'll find more information about it on the Whales Tohora website, in the Whale sounds page.

@BLUEBOYISLEDGE I know a bit about Liopleurodon, but what I find indicates that he maxed out at about 40 feet and 25 tons, about as much as a Sperm whale cow. A modern Sperm whale bull can get up to about 67 feet, and there is evidence that the biggest bulls in the 19th and early 20th centuries could get up to over 80 feet. A little digging around reveals that the icthyosaur named Shastasaurus got up to 75 feet, which would decisively make it the largest known predator of all time.

Hi, The "lasers" are just a graphic representation of the echolocation mechanism. They are sound waves and are invisible in real life. If they hit a prey, they will bounce off, return to the whale, which will detect that there's food to hunt down there. You'll find more explanations in the Whale lab section of the Whales Tohorā website. Florence, web admin at Te Papa
@kendallsievert8228

This was a terrible show, Giant squid are much better than whales! And to think of that poor squids life being lost, It brock my heart. It got ate its only life being lost forever by a whale! whales should just eat fish! The reason I say this is because fish have no idea of what goes on around them. And to prove this my own teacher said that gold fish have a memory span of 3 seconds then anything in there tiny brains gets tossed into there fish trash can. So if u haven't gotten the point that whales should just eat fish think about it now.

prettyflower75919 actually gold fish have been taught to ring a bell for food in a fish tank when ever they get hungry and even in my own fish tank goldfish learn which part of the tank the food is dropped from and they would still remember this for weeks. Besides whales eating squid is as natural as rain and snow
@emem7242
@emem7242 9 років тому
._. ok pretty flower what you just said made absolutely no sense, if you feel bad about that squid being eaten (not ate) it was only an animation of the real thing and thousands of animals (at the least) get killed every day. Even if it "brock" your heart deal with it, it's nature.

Hi GeeWedKay, This is an answer from Steve O'Shea, the expert on squid: The average depth of capture (in New Zealand waters) of adults is ~ 500 metres (498 in fact), with the most shallow trawled at 275 m and deepest (one only) ~ 1000 m (taken in an orange roughy trawl, a non-closing net, and likely caught somewhere during trawl deployment or retrieval.
