Honestly when I think about it, Squidward and Squilliam do seem like ex lovers or former close friends. Whenever Squilliam would talk to Squidward, it kind of sounded like he was flirting with him. I know he was ridiculing Squidward, but it didn’t even come across as that harsh (at least to me) it was more like….light teasing. And Squidward would be shaking in his boots and stumbling over his words whenever Squilliam was around. Not to mention the nickname “Squiddy”.

Fun Fact: My biology teacher made us take a test on the “Band Geeks” episode. He just played the episode for us and would pause it when a character was on screen that he wanted us to classify. It was a lot of fun and an easy A.

I guess the reason Squilliam is going to such lengths to impress Squidward is because he is jealous of Squidward’d tenacity. I saw another theory that Squidward isn't even bad at the clarinet. In the first episodes, he played well. This is an incredible theory that I’d totally buy into, but I have a nitpick over the ending. Whenever Squidward romantically fantasizes about a relationship, it’s always himself with a female (e.g: him dancing with a lady on a magazine, his dream of marrying a Krabby Patty and having a kid, etc.). So, while it isn’t impossible for Squidward to be in a gay relationship, I have another theory to pose: Squidward and Squilliam were in love and feuding over the same girl in high school. A classic rivalry as old as time, Squidward won the affection of a girl whom Squilliam wanted as well and would go to the nail to humiliate Squidward for it. Perhaps this hypothetical lady knew Squidward was more talented than he seemed and knew Squilliam was a fraud hiding behind his money. Now to explain the robe: in Squilliam’s attempts to win the girl over, he gifted a robe to her. However, she continued to adore Squidward more and ended up leaving it with him, further infuriating Squilliam.

Said ward IS a good artist, the whole point of his character is that his hubris and pride gets in the way. Because when he doesn’t care about his art, he does extremely well.
