A talk based on Joan’s book “Standing at the Edge”. The book weaves together scientific research she will share with us and her own powerful personal experiences as a social activist and humanitarian to show how we can transform our biggest challenges with compassion and wisdom. Joan’s teachings will benefit Googlers as we take on big challenges that respect the opportunities before us. Her talk will demonstrate how to do this while still maintaining respect for each other through compassion.
About Joan:
Joan Halifax, American Zen Buddhist teacher, anthropologist, ecologist, civil rights activist, hospice caregiver, and the author of several books on Buddhism and spirituality. She received her Ph.D. in medical anthropology and received a National Science Foundation Fellowship in Visual Anthropology, was an Honorary Research Fellow in Medical Ethnobotany at Harvard University, and was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the Library of Congress. She is a thought leader with respect to well-being and compassion. She is a highly sought after speaker widely known and respected in many of our internal communities.

I’m 85 yrs old and have been working on my “spiritual dimension” intentionally for over the past 42 yrs. And Joan Halifax just described what I’ve recently learned….that love via compassion ,as she finished her talk.is a resilient, infinite possibility. So grateful for this talk,so timely ,validation, such is synchronicity.Such is being truly alive. In gratitude.❣️Rachel

This is a must-watch for all who consider themselves EMPATHS! It made so much sense to me and has helped me to find grounding in these chaotic times. The distinction between compassion fatigue and empathetic distress is PRICELESS!

That is so good that she clarified that there is no such thing as "compassion fatigue." I agree that it is an unhelpful term. I will use the term "empathic distress" to clarify for others now too.

Thank you Joan for the distinction between compassion and empathetic distress. And also to remind us by coming into the body (finding your feet) and allowing a new way of perception you were able to reconnect wtih compassion. Thank you! And thank you for all of your work......much gratitude and appreciation.

So happy to hear her asking to get rid of the awful term "compassion fatigue" - compassion isn't the cause of distress, it's the answer

Yes! I failed an essay some years ago for saying that I didn't believe there could be such a thing as compassion fatigue, as compassion is restorative not draining. So glad to hear this sentiment affirmed by Roshi Joan.

Joan Halifax quote highlights from this video: “Compassion is the most important human quality that we are invited to actualize today.” “There's a kind of deficit of compassion in our culture today that is affecting everyone.” “It's difficult to actually train people in compassion-not as an acquired skill, but to actually create the conditions where compassion is an emergent process in our subjectivity.” “Compassion is not possible without attentional balance. Our capacity to actually look deeply into what is happening in the present moment necessitates that we are able to be very grounded and not divided in our attention, not dispersed in our attention, nor distracted.” “Open up to the world in a way where we're in this beneficial, non-separate, non-objectifying relationship with so-called ‘others.’” “Understand that all beings are really aspiring to be happy, even the most deluded ones and the most politically confused ones.” “Our realization in meditation practice, the sort of sign of it, is that we recognize that we're deeply interconnected with all beings and things.” “Beneath the narrative, beneath the actions of any one of those individuals, was a human being.” “Respect is about holding all beings and things, including all species on this earth, in equal regard.” “The most important thing that we can do is to actualize compassion, because compassion gives you the attentional balance, emotional balance, and insight that allows you to transform even the experiences that have caused us distress, have caused us the most suffering, into qualities of strength.” “There's no such thing as compassion fatigue.” “Compassion actually enhances resilience, enhances immune response, enhances longevity, and it’s morally elevating.”
