SpaceX tested another Starship prototype, SN10, to an altitude of 10 km in order to practice its daring belly flop to tail down landing maneuver. This time the flip was successful utilizing 3 raptor engines, then shutting two down for the final landing exactly as planned. Unfortunately 3 of the 6 landing legs didn't successfully deployed (as you can see in our footage), alongside a fairly high landing velocity, resulting in an explosion 8 minutes after touching down.

This flight was the best so far with the one engine issue, being the only problem before the flip maneuver. You can see the flame color difference in some of the closeups. However, there was definitely a fire as the two engines shutdown before SN10 landed. This indicates a leak, stuck valve or other problem before touchdown. And, touchdown was at too high of a velocity, which caused (significant) damage. Power could have been lost in the one lit engine, due to the leak or several other things could have led to the hard landing. The most amazing thing is that it made it as far as it did, it proved the concept of the flip maneuver landing and it changed rocketry forever.
@paulround8501
@paulround8501 3 роки тому
Elon already tweeted out that the single engine was supposed throttle up close to touchdown but for some reason failed to. The hard landing likely broke something plumbing leading to cryogenic fuel and oxidised leaking out over the pad, It was only a matter of time before the hot engines ignited it. Still It was a good flight from a test perspective showing that the whole flight profile is achievable. In another couple of flights I think they will have this completely sorted out.

@bazoo513
@bazoo513 3 роки тому
A few observations: - There was unusually strong venting of something during most of the flight - Judging by the color of exhaust, at least one engine ran too fuel-rich - Half (or so) of the legs failed to lock in extended position - The touch-down was at a rather high velocity, and the craft was not decelerating at all during the final few dozen meters - The craft visibly bounced on touchdown - The final explosion was actually pretty small, and most of destruction was caused by rupturing tanks, so only indirectly caused by the explosion itself. All in all, it seems that they licked the belly flop itself and the transition into and out of it. Engines obviously need more work. While these prototypes (or, more accurately, test articles) _are_ expendable, I suppose SpaceX would not mind demonstrating they can already re-fly one. So, the rest of landing sequence and gear also needs improvement. "Good enough" is indeed enough, but not less than that.
@antoniomaglione4101
@antoniomaglione4101 3 роки тому
It is possible that the fuel / oxydiser ratio is varied to control the specific impulse of the Raptor. My impression is, while the controls of the Raptor are excellent, they are not good enough yet for a perfectly smooth landing. They are trying something never attempted before. Re-lighting a full-flow engine is a complex task in itself, and doing it at the level of precision required for a smooth powered landing requires a software miracle before it is perfected. Surprises generally arise from the too many nested control loops, and therefore structural changes to the software are required - even for limited modifications to the behaviour of the control systems. SpaceX has the best coders - and they will invent the right solutions reasonably quick.
@bazoo513

@Marc83Aus
@Marc83Aus 3 роки тому
Extra oxidizer is vented throughout the flight,something like 20 tons are vented to help the weight distribution and to lighten the vehicle for landing. There was a scrub 3 hours earlier due to an engine generating too much thrust, they just reset the abort system and let that engine do its thing, hence more carbon rich exhaust. The legs were the biggest problem, it also was still tilted slightly so its likely its whole weight came down on a single leg, initially anyway. Touchdown speed would have probably been fine if every leg had deployed properly That bounce was crazy, shows how durable the tanks and welds are that they could absorb and return that much energy without major failure. FInal explosion was probably caused by a combination of the oxygen tank leaking due to the bounce, as well as the fire that was going on after engine shutdowns. Something was leaking methane.
@bazoo513
@bazoo513 3 роки тому
@@Marc83Aus Ah, I forgot about that first abort and "Nah, that's OK!" solution (it _was_ OK, after all.) So, extra O2 was, in this test, essentially ballast? Interesting... I agree that this test was a success (as were the previous two, actually.) SpaceX has demonstrated amply that they know their propulsive landing - the point now is belly flop, Raptors and the construction of the vehicle itself. It would seem that we will see a thinner-skinned flying test article before long. Or, perhaps not, given recent Musk's announcement of '23 timeframe for "Dear Moon". Thanks!
@Marc83Aus
@Marc83Aus 3 роки тому
@@bazoo513 2023 is looking pretty optimistic, the raptors are still having quite a lot of problems. But I'm reminded that the F1 engines of Saturn 5 required thousands of tests and iterative development before they finally got everything working properly, mostly it was the injector combustion instability, but i'm sure the sheer power and complexity of the design also contributed. And after all that the F1 never had any issues in flight. Raptors being the most complicated engines ever designed and using a lot of new technology they still have much work before they become reliable. But thats what's happening in boca chica, running engines under non ideal conditions really does help find out problems .
