It's been two years since the release of Steam Deck! The most innovative gaming device of the last decade that changed the way how we perceive PC Gaming. Steam Deck transformed the landscape of gaming on Linux and affected the way I play videogames.

I think the Steam Deck is the greatest gaming device 🐐 I’ve ever purchased in my entire life and I’ve owned like 20+ different home consoles mixed with handhelds before. Steam Deck is not my personal favorite, but it’s the greatest gaming device I’ve ever bought. I believe in time, it can be my favorite. I’ve owned the Vita for nearly 7 years and I don’t ever recall gaming on it much as my Steam Deck during the last 12 days I’ve owned it. Same applies to my Switch Lite. I bring my Steam Deck with me all the time. It’s usually placed in the back of my car and when I have downtime since I’m a delivery driver, I’ll play it. And I don’t just play like 10-15 minutes spurts. I’m talking about using the entire battery life. That’s usually about 3 hours if all my games are set to 30 fps. Understand that I haven’t really gamed much since the mid 00s. I became more of a casual gamer. I missed out on the PS3 and Xbox 360 during their heyday. During Gen 6, I was working and dated someone. Didn’t have much time to game from 2003-2006. Then when I got a PS4 slim in May 2017, I had games for it but I mostly used it for Netflix and watching videos from an external hard drive. It wasn’t until I bought a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 did I get back into emulation after my modded first gen iPod touch and PSP phat ran ROMs from 2008-2010. I discovered by Sept 2021 that PSP and Dreamcast emulation became excellent and GameCube and PS2 improved immensely as long as I had a powerful chip like the maligned Snapdragon 888. Steam Deck is basically taking my PS4 everywhere with me. I know it’s probably closer to an Xbox One but you can still play God of War (2018), Uncharted 4, Spider-Man, and The Last of Us on it. You can play Metal Gear Solid 5 and the FF7 Remake. Each time I turn it off after a gaming session, I tell myself how awesome it is. Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t wait to open your presents on Christmas? That’s the same feeling I get when playing my Steam Deck. It’s a godsend to middle aged guys like me (Xennial) and new daddies who want to play a quick game of GTA5 while trying to put the baby to sleep. I don’t plan to own a lot of games for my Steam Deck. I notice when I bombard any handheld with so many games, I tend to play less of it. It’s because there are so many options. My ADHD will prevent me from finishing a game because I’ll keep changing the game I want to play. That’s why I uninstalled EmuDeck. If I’m going to do that, I’d rather do that on my Flip3 or get an Odin 2. I’ll use my iPhone SE 2022 and Vita for mostly indies. I’ll use my Switch for Nintendo exclusives. Only AAA titles released during the last 15 years will be on my Steam Deck and it’s usually an IP I’m familiar with like Final Fantasy, Uncharted, God of War, and Metal Gear Solid. I’m not familiar with Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Starfield. I’m not even into the GTA but I’m hearing GTA6 will save this gen. I know the Steam Deck isn’t perfect. Compared to a ROG Ally and Legion Go with the Z1 Extreme, it’s not as powerful as those two. Then sometimes the games won’t launch because those games were originally developed to work on Windows. But I love mines! It’s so nice to game on it and without weaker graphics that the Switch will have. I don’t believe the Switch 2 will be that much more powerful than it when it arrives in 2025. Steam Deck is surprisingly comfortable to game on. Inexpensive. Easy to repair. Great software and community support. I think Steam Deck will reign supreme until the Deck 2 comes out. It’s become my PlayStation for PC games since Sony isn’t part of the handheld wars anymore and the PS Portal doesn’t count as a handheld. I do think the Deck is expendable. Once another new form factor or the successor arrives, there is no point keeping your old Deck. No worries of backwards compatibility. Same applies to the Switch if the successor is backwards compatible. It’s not like the Vita which never had a successor. So you never really get sentimentally attached because a newer one will completely replace the older one. Let’s say a Steam Deck Lite comes out, I’d sell my current one without hesitation. I can praise my current one now as I’m still in my honeymoon phase with it, but I know I can never get emotionally attached because it’s easily replaceable. I may sell my LCD one once the used OLEDs go down to $350. Sell my LCD for $250 and add another $100 to get the OLED. But it most likely happens when Deck 2 is out. Rather have beefier newer hardware than a more comfortable footprint but still has the same old chip. Steam Deck is already pretty comfortable as is. Ranking My Gaming Devices Favorites - 1. PS Vita 2. Switch Lite 3. Steam Deck 4. PSP 5. PS1 6. Dreamcast 7. PS2 8. Super NES 9. GameCube 10. Genesis 11. NES 12. PS4 13. PS3 14. Xbox 15. N64 16. Wii 17. Game Boy 18. Game Gear 19. DS Lite 20. Saturn 21. GBA SP 22. Jaguar Steam Deck could already be the GOAT by next week. It’s a complete godsend to gamers everywhere and who want that portability. I’m going to be on Team Gabe/Valve for a while unless Sony finally returns to the handheld race.

I read this whole thing with the fattest smile on my face. ( also I agree that portal thing Sony released is a complete joke) As someone whose job is about to return to in person, you've reminded me that maybe it won't be so bad anymore. Highly recommend you do what i did and pick up a DS and mod it, super easy and worked for me for a loooooong time.

I don't want to imagine what the PC market would be without Valve. By the way, i used to use Linux as a curiosity with a dual boot partition, I've been using it as my main system for 2 years now and with the Windows partition removed.

Bit inaccurate, Ayaneo and Onexplayer had semi-ok handhelds out before Steamdeck. The joy of the steamdeck, is an OS that isn’t utterly garbage. 👍

I'll say it again, but Valve has done more for Linux and open source software in general than any other organization. They've had more of an influence and a more positive influence than GNU or the FSF ever had, bar none. If you want people to adopt a given system, put games on it.

Red Hat, Canonical. Also check list kernel developer employers - Intel, Google, AMD, NVIDIA etc. Linux distributions started with GNU user space, still ships it.
@anon_y_mousse
@anon_y_mousse 6 днів тому
@@sergeykish Not how I meant it, but okay, none of the companies that helped develop it were GNU. The kernel isn't GNU and Linus himself avoided 3 for a reason. However, hardly any real gains from the notoriety of Red Hat and Canonical, and certainly Google, nor any of the hardware manufacturers you list, promoted Linux, especially towards end users. Most people don't know or care that Android is a Linux distro, and certainly wouldn't use it on the desktop, either as Android or any other distro. More people are learning what Linux is now because of Valve and the Steam Deck than for any other driving force.

@@anon_y_mousse Canonical has not "promoted Linux, especially towards end users"? Red Hat employees support Linux infrastructure. Red Hat employees started projects like systemd, Wayland, PipeWire. Linux lives because companies like Red Hat used it to replac UNIX on servers. GNU is gcc, bash, make etc etc. Linux kernel was possible because of GNU. NVIDIA, AMD, Intel made drivers. Google, Oracle etc improved kernel. Google sponsored Mozilla, made Chrome. Browsers have broken Windows monopoly. Sun made MySQL, OpenOffice. Apache, MySQL, PHP made working on Linux stack lucrative. Linux already has great desktop experience. Statcounter reports 15% Linux desktop share in India, do you think that's because of Steam Deck?
