Valve has launched Steam Deck, a handheld gaming device with an AMD processor, RDNA 2 graphics, and a 7 inch touch screen. It is basically a handheld PC. Which OS does it run? Linux of course!

I'm really interested in the next release with more than 8cu. 16 would allow for a 1080p screen which brings me to my next thought.. why don't they make an apu with 4channel ram since they're doing soldered custom ram anyway.. that level is mobile gaming is what I'm after.

@@ElPolloRojo VR gaming is definitely out of the question but who knows, it may be a possibility in the next iteration of the Deck (providing Valve doesn’t get bored and abandon it like their previous hardware). Proton would probably be more mature by then as well especially if Valve decides to push out a new VR Headset with a standalone linux based system like the Deck... They also claim to be working with developers of EAC and BattleEye for workarounds with anti-cheat software as well and are actually advocating devs to drop DRM (check their DEV FAQ page for this). Who knows what the future would bring. This could be Valve testing the waters for something bigger later down the line.
@aaronace1997
@aaronace1997 2 роки тому
@@FedJimSmith Valve claims to be working on this and intends to make every game under the steam library work. Considering the Deck will be a make or break device as they are most likely selling it at a lost they’ll probably depend on software sales on their platform to make a profit (like Sony and Msoft usually does with every new console generation). As such getting things to work flawlessly will be a major priority and more than likely Linux will become the defacto OS for running Steam games. Other stores are mediocre imo anyway. And if all else fails the option to install Windows is always there (providing there isn’t any compatibility issues between the Deck hardware and Windows)

The 8CU GPU in this AMD SoC could be the same as one going into Exynos. 1:30 The Exynos version though, is actually 6 core according to gizchina leaks. I’m not sure what the division of compute units is there between GPU cores though, that’s why. While the spec sheet says 1.6TFLOPS, it’s actually closer to the A14’s 1.3TFLOPS GPU than the M1’s 2.6TFLOPS GPU in FP32. That’s why I want to know a real comparison.

@@DrAdityaReddy Remember three more things : 1. Exynos version is reportedly a 6 core variant (I guess it’s just 6 compute units, they must’ve botched up the translation on compute unit and core). 1.6TFLOPS is for this 8CU GPU. By unitary method, it will still be 1.2TFLOPS for 6CU GPU. 2. A14 is 1.3TFLOPS. A15 is coming. It will be at least 15-20% faster like each year, which would actually make it faster than Exynos in this case, at 1.5TFLOPS. 3. The max tdp of the SoC in Steam deck is 15W, same as M1. That’s too much for a phone. Maybe the ARM CPU cores will result in some efficiency over the X86 Zen2 cores in AMD cpu, but still, it is 10W easily. That’s still a lot for a phone. A14 for comparison, draws only about 5-6W. ----------------------- One Ray of hope for Exynos could be the fact that it will be on 5nm process node whereas AMD chips right now are on 7nm, but still, there’s not much to gain when it’s so much higher than a mobile SoC tdp. That’s why I wanted a comparison. The numbers are too much to wrap heads around. Even with a 5nm process and ARM CPU cores, it’s not possible to practically cut the TDP of the chip in half.

I'd imagine they need a newer kernel since the drivers have likely only been written for this thing within the past year. If you need basically the latest kernel, that leaves you with Arch, Fedora, or openSUSE really (you could maintain a custom Debian unstable, but that can be a significant hassle). Alpine would have been a very interesting contender if it wasn't for having to jump through hoops around glibc. But if you're looking for the easiest base to build a distro around your very specific needs, I'd reach for Arch in this case as well.

@@LordSoulSicarious If you do the maths you'll see that even if you compare the US prices they showed, after you add the sales tax of any state (highest tax being around 10% from what I've found) that price should still be lower than the European price. It's not that big of a difference when you include US sale but yes, it's still cheaper. Haven't compared these 2 with UK prices but those are clearly on par with Europe or even more expensive than that.

@@ElPolloRojo In my circle of friends, no one uses Linux and I don't want to be the guy that can't play or has constant problems because of it. Like, someone finds a new fun game, we buy it and we play it. No fiddling around. Currently my regularly played games are: Apex Legends, Deep Rock Galactic, Vermintide 2, League of Legends, Starcraft 2, Overwatch. I think half of these use anticheat... Some require other launchers (Origin, Battlenet). Also I never have the latest hardware, I'm on a Ryzen 3100 and RX460 2gb with 16GB RAM right now and the next thing I will change is the GPU when I get something that is at least double the speed, 8GB Vram and under 200€, preferrably under 100€ (maybe used). I tried Ubuntu like 10 years ago when Wine was the hot shit and it was a pain in the ass. It took me days to even install radeon drivers and when I finally got a game running the performance was terrible. Like unplayable. I've read most of this got much better now but not on a level where you can do what I described above: Just download and play any game like on windows. Most non-gaming software I use either has Linux versions or good alternatives but if I have to reboot into windows to play even once a week I will just stick to windows. Yes, I'm lazy ;)

I'm intrigued by one of your Twitter comments: how Android SOC manufacturers and phone OEMs feel 2 Cortex X2 cores would be too much on the battery. And yet Apple with its far more performant big cores on its A series SOCs have been using 2 of those big cores in phones with as small a form factor as the iphone mini. Seems like a lazy excuse on part of the OEMs and SOC manufacturers. In general I feel that it's only Apple that is actually willing to push the envelope, while others are too content to coast along.
@GaryExplains
@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
No, it has nothing to do with laziness. That really is an unfair comment. Engineering is never about laziness. The engineers at Apple, Arm, Qualcomn, whoever work very hard and are all dedicated to their jobs. The simple fact of the matter is that Apple's big cores offers a better power/performance ratio. Having said that, it is worth noting that Apple can *only* include two big cores and whereas Arm's design includes four big cores in the same power budget ,either 4x Cortex-A710 or 1x X2 + 3x A710. That is why Apple doesn't use octa-core processors for its phones but does for bigger devices.
@siddestroyer
@siddestroyer 2 роки тому
@@GaryExplains The Cortex X1 was in the ballpark of the A12 Vortex big core performance (not too certain efficiency wise, but should be in same ballpark) so I feel SOC manufacturers like Qualcomm could have pushed the envelope more if they wanted to.

Finally, Valve did a great move in my humble opinion, Debian as a base for SteamOS was really a bad option, really obsolete software, Arch is nicer for this. Plus my beloved and always used KDE Plasma as the Desktop, BEST CHOICE for me, without doubt :). I'm seriously thinking about buying/pre-order the medium or most expensive Steam Deck. I'm now able to play my beloved F2P Warframe without leaving my beloved and only OS GNU/Linux, thanks to Valve's efforts and money invested/spent on this, through Proton, employing some devs to improve Wayland development, drivers for AMD, (Vulkan drivers I mean). I really think, hope and really desire that Valve triumphs greatly with this Steam Deck, because it could be a serious game changer, Gabe Newell already expressed his thoughts about Linux commanding the gaming, a few years ago, they failed miserably with the first try, Steam Machines, but I really think this Steam Deck could be the way, the start of the path, at least. Thank you very much as always for your great content, you really help me to understand a few things and love to see your videos covering this kind of news about Linux gaming space :). Receive a huge, sincere, refreshing (as we now need it) & virtual hug, as well as my best desires Gary ^^.
