Spion Kop has nothing to do with Liverpool. Lots of football grounds that were built at the turn of the 20th century (including Anfield) had a stand named Spion Kop because the steep hill was reminiscent of the Spion Kop (hill) in South Africa where a battle was fought during the Boer War.

The amount of miss information in the original video and in the comments is mental. - The Wednesday cricket club formed in 1820 - named after the day of which the founding members had a half day at work in which they could play. In 1867 the club decided to create a football club to keep the team fit during the winter months. The cricket side of the club ceased to exist after 1925. The football club eventually added Sheffield to their name in 1920. - The Spion kop is a name in reference to a battle in the boer war - fought on a steep hill. Many old English grounds have a stand with the same name. Absolutely nothing to do with the Hillsborough disaster or Liverpool. - Plus the disaster was at the opposite end, leppings lane. - Wednesday are nicknamed the Owls after dropping their original club nickname “The Blades” - later taken by their city rivals. - The Owls nickname is due to a former player presenting the club with an Owl mascot during the 1910’s. Plus there probably is significance in the area of Sheffield the stadium is located being in Owlerton. The stadium capacity is technically around 38,000, due to safety concerns the uncovered corner stand has been condemned, plus the club now no longer sells any severely restricted view seats. reducing the capacity to 34,500 - I do like the original posters vids usually but I’d much prefer any facts about clubs / grounds to be accurate. - If you’re a Liverpool, why didn’t you visit the Hillsborough memorial at the side of the south stand?

Great video. The derby record is actually 46-42 overall though for competitive fixtures including cup games. In the league it is SUFC 43 SWFC 36.

Looking at both grounds and you can tell that Sheffield United is such a beautiful ground over Sheffield Wednesday and I'm a Man City fan. I have been to both. It just seems that Sheffield Wednesday has never had a make over sadly.

Hillsborough has that traditional football ground feel about it. Even though Hillsborough has hosted many many FA Cup semi finals and several World Cup finals games in 1966, only Bramall Lane of the two, has hosted the FA Cup final.

Having read through some of the comments on here it's amazing how many people can't get their facts right. Firstly Bramall Lane was a cricket ground used by quite a few local cricket clubs back in the mid to late 1800's, Sheffield United was an amalgamation of some of those cricket clubs, the Sheffield United football club was formed to use the Bramall Lane ground in the winter months and generate more revenue. Sheffield Wednesday were formed by members of The Wednesday Cricket Club in 1867, again to keep things going in the winter months, many played both cricket and football, and the cricket club played matches at Darnall, Hyde Park and of course Bramall Lane. The football club also played matches at Bramall Lane as well as Sheaf House on Bramall Lane amongst others before moving to Olive Grove at Heeley and then up to Hillsborough which was initially called The Wednesday Ground. Sir Charles Clegg was president at Wednesday having played for both them and Sheffield FC and was a significant person in the forming of Sheffield United and was on the boards of both football clubs. The (former) Adelphi Hotel in Sheffield which was demolished to make way for The Crucible Theatre was a notable venue where decisions were made to form Wednesday, United and Yorkshire Cricket Club. Unitedites are traditionally bitter about Wednesday being 'bigger and better' even though there is not much between them in terms of success or the lack of it, United have been the more prevalent as a club in the last twenty years since Wednesday's decline from the Premier League and have been in the Premier League twice themselves in that period, although historically Wednesday are still recognised as being the better supported club, sitting 11th place in overall English club attendance rankings, having had more consistently higher attendances than United, that may change in the future with the decline of the club under it's present ownership of Mr Chansiri.

I remember us playing at Wembley in the fa cup semi final the atmosphere was insane the derby is one of the biggest rivalries out there.

I went to Bramhall Lane in the 70s when the cricket ground was still part of the stadium, the football club had just 3 stands, with a cricket pavilion at one end, which was far away from the pitch. I went to see Sheffield utd v Manchester City.

That stand you were looking at at the start has just had the black painted on in the last year, which is why it looks so clean. It used to just be sort of concrete coloured but they decided to change it to black. I think it looks much better now tbf. Also, the ‘Spion Kop’ at Hillsborough has nothing to do with the Hillsborough disaster. A Spion Kop (or Kop) is just the name for a big single tier stand behind the goal. Also, your info about the origins of Wednesdays name is slightly wrong. Wednesday got their name from the cricket club ‘The Wednesday’ founded in 1820, who got their name because they played on Wednesdays. Also, seeing as you did Sheffield FC, Sheff United and Wednesday, you should’ve stopped by Sandygate Road (home of Hallam FC), it’s the oldest football ground in the world and home to the second oldest football club in the world. Plus, you wouldn’t have needed permission, you could just walked through the door on carsick hill road which I don’t think they lock. If not there’s other areas where you can easily get in, the walls not too high to climb. There is a lot more things you could have covered. So much interesting history in both Sheffield United and Wednesday. Enjoyed the video though!

Very enjoyable visit to both clubs, shame you couldn't get in at Hillsborough - I thought it was actually going to happen this time ! lol ... I went in the early 90s but didn't take any photos (phones with cameras hadn't been invented then !) and would love to go back to the city. I believe there's a hill in a country park from where you can get a great shot looking down at Sheff Wed's stadium ....

I'm impressed by both clubs in Sheffield, the history of football in this city and the beauty of these two classic stadiums full of character which stands are still covered by some of these lovely looking gable roofs. There was also a Sheffield Thursday. The original ground was a cricket ground in Attercliffe and Sheffield Wednesday at that time was a cricket team, There were a lot of clubs playing on same ground. The ground is now a graveyard.

The ground is actually in Owlerton, Hillsborough is the larger area though Plus as many have mentioned Kop has nothing to do with the disaster but it seemed like that was guess work as you were walking past looking at the sign No big deal

the reason why it is called sheffield wednesday is because in the 1800s the sheffield workers would finish early a couple of them formed a cricket club called the wednesday cricket club who played in owlerton but they had nothing to do so in 1867 some people met at a hotel and formed the wednesday football club until 1929 when owlerton became part of the sheffield they became sheffield wednesday. we are also called the owls because we play in a part of sheffield called owlerton

The name Wednesday comes from a cricket club that consisted of shop workers, Wednesday was the only day they could play (Sunday was the sabbath) as on Wednesday afternoons they had half day closing. Wanting to keep together for social and fitness reasons during the winter months they started a football club as the game was becoming ever more popular. Although often being referred to as SHEFFIELD Wednesday they didn't officially adopt this name until 1929, before that their official name was 'The Wednesday Football Club.

Derek Dooley also played for Sheffield Wednesday, he then had his leg amputated due to gangrene at war. Derek Dooley way is named after him and so is a lounge at hillsbrough

I know it was a quick tour, but needed more on Dooleys importance to both clubs, a trip to Sandygate, plus the fact Wednesday used to play at Bramall Lane and were called the blades at one point! If you come back there's Stocksbridge Park Steels fc and Handsworth fc on the non league scene too.

Willie Henderson just looked at him & sead I have played in Old Firm games so I dont think so & tooked at The Sheffield Wednesday Manger like he was stupid this would of been 1972. It is sad that Wednesday is no longer a fan driven club. It started going downhill with Dave Allen, who then went on to ruin Chesterfield FC. Under Mandaric there were good signs that fans mattered again and then Chansiri came in with zero clue on how to run a football club and ramping up prices across the board whilst still managing to fail the FFP rules. I've lived round the corner for 13 years and know lots of die-hard old-school fans that simply have given up on the club at this stage. No surprise considering the price of tickets! Sheffield FC and Hallam FC Is where it is at; honest, down to earth clubs that still care about their supporters.

Think you have a couple of facts about Wednesday slightly wrong. Called Wednesday as that was the day any of the steel works closed early (For maintenance) and they set up sports clubs for the afternoon including cricket, hence the Wednesday cricket club in 1820. In 1867 they decided to form a football club for the members to have an activity during the winter months. 2 Theories why they are called the Owls. First as the stadium was in Owlerton (which is actually pronounced Ollerton). And secondly a club captain in the early 1900s had a pet owl that he brought to the games as a lucky mascot and the club went on a good run of results and the nickname stuck.
