Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”
“For more than three decades, Jon Stewart has brightened our lives and challenged our minds as he delivers current events and social satire with his trademark wit and wisdom. For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth”
- Deborah F. Rutter, Kennedy Center President
The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.
As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.
Capital One® is the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor as part of the bank’s three-year, $3 million gift to fund Comedy at the Kennedy Center, a signature program at the Center focused on elevating comedy as an art form and uniting the community through laughter.
The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.
The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

Man this makes me miss them all together, as a team. Absolutely brilliant together. I remember the post 9/11 show. That was a terrible time in NY, & the country. We were all so young back then. What happened after 9/11 to the first responders, who spent weeks going through the toxic pile of rubble, was criminal. The head of the EPA came up to Ground Zero, & told them.. & the public, that the air was safe to breathe. It wasn’t. I know why Jon advocates for 9/11 First Responders, & veterans suffering from exposure to the toxic burnpits. I saw it all too bc I lived it w/ him. I’ve great admiration for him in many ways, most especially bc he’s such a good human being. I love that the main cast of the Daily Show w/ Jon are all still good friends, doing what they love. Sadly that is just a time period thing, toxic burnpits were the last thing on peoples minds and they didn't know any better when breathing it in. A whole city fell to pieces, saving lives and rebuilding was more important to those people in that moment. Today they would over protect you because children grow up coddled and can't be bothered to make any type of sacrifice big or small in order to help a neighbor. And hindsight us 20/20, Wearing a mask was not as acceptable or as common as it is today.

Yep, that's our Gov't, they tell you lies or nothing at all when they are placing your life/safety in danger. Over 34 yrs ago the USN did not think asbestos was a big deal to us and now we are paying for it. 4 yrs after I got out they demolished the base, which was built during WW2. Asbestos was used greatly during that period. Asbestos ran rapid all over the base. I just wonder how many people suffered, perished behind this, and the Navy knew all along. I'm glad JS has been a voice for the first responders and the military, I'm glad he cares.

So funny! 😂👍 All these comedians paying homage to one. It's like a roast, but more 'respectful' so to speak. It's great to have a good laugh at the end of a horrid week 😝

A well deserved speech for a great man. His show surely took immense daily efforts from him, which certainly ended up being too heavy of a burden, but was so precious to us all, and is deeply missed. Live long, Mr. Stewart !

I love how there is such a “farm system” in comedy. You see guys like Steve at the peak of their game talk about being writers and starting out on other shows. This industry is far richer because of that network.

I like watching these tributes because they are often hillarious, and a surprising number of my favorites are by Steve Carell (for Steve Martin, Tina Fey, etc). This speaks to what a kind friend he is and the kind of comedic talents he does not spare. Also, always the bridesmaid, right? ;)

I think it says a lot about the people that worked under Stewart. Carrell, Colbert and John Oliver were all under his tree and they are now all just as prominent as Stewart. How many people working on the Ellen show or any other show have held any prominence after they left that organization (other than SNL). Greatness breeds greatness.
