Stone preservation across Capitol Hill is a top priority for the Architect of the Capitol, as nearly every building is enveloped in stone, and all have problems.
Weather, age and deferred maintenance are destroying many of the finer details of these awe-inspiring stone edifices and causing safety concerns. Addressing this problem across the Capitol campus takes a team of historic preservationists, structural engineers and stonemasons. Numerous projects are underway, or planned, to restore and preserve these historic buildings.

I was fortunate to work in the Capitol, Library of Congress and several of the House and Senate buildings during my career with elevators . The Capitol is by far the grandest and biggest and my personal favorite. The art work alone puts most individual museums to shame in quality and quantity of the items when compared side by side. We should move the actual government to the middle of the nation where it is possible to have real security and space to protect all involved. Take all of those grand buildings and keep them as museums.

A full length documentary would be awesome, tell us what kind of stones need treatment, and how do you treat them, and what are the processes involved - like 3D scanning, printing? Pre-cast plaster?

One of my profs form way back said parts of the capitol were built out of sandstone from near Fredericksburg, VA which is a very soft sandstone and that’s why the building is painted to prevent weathering. Is this true?

A lot of the cathedrals, especially here in the U.K., have undergone massive work to the stonework. A lot of this due to acid rain caused by industrialisation. I know that the job of historical stonemason has become never ending!
