My wife speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. she said the same thing, they do not use a "Yes" or "No"...for yes, they say things like correct, or want. For no it's more like saying "no want" or "not correct". I am realizing how complicated English really is for people to learn it and how complicated it is for us English speakers to learn a more simplified language. When I write Gaelic, I want to write like I am writing in English, and it gets very wordy lol.

I think as native English speakers we just want to make a simple language like Gàidhlig more complicated because our language is complicated.

It takes a bit to wrap your head around this at first, but the beauty of Gàidhlig forcing this type of response it it removes ambiguity and greatly reduces miscommunication. The questioner will know very quickly if you understood the question, especially if you use the long method that answers by reiterating the question, starting with the negative verb form they used to ask. If I ask you "A bheil?" And you answer with " Cha robh", I already know there was a problem understanding the question, and the rest of your answer will tell me what needs fixing. So worth it in the long run to learn, and a feature of the language I absolutely love.

Thank you Jason. Very clearly explained and the hints are so helpful. 👏👏 Like Eric, I find it difficult to get my head around not translating directly from English. It’s a puzzler!

Most of the time in Japanese hair and iie are translated to yes or no but like in Scottish/Irish most of the time you will reword tge question to mean yes and now whereas hai is used like you said in the video but iie is more like an acual 'no' form. / inform. Yes: はい hai /うん un No: いいえ iie/うんん unn

Is there a distinction between the phonemes of "Tha" and "Cha"? The only difference, to me, is in the written form.
@bjornthorsson4921
@bjornthorsson4921 Рік тому
The distinction is that "tha" is pronounced with a voiceless glottal fricative, which is the phonetic name for the "h" sound in "hot" for instance. "Cha" is pronounced with a voiceless velar fricative, which does not exist in English per se, at least phonemically, but is the sound you have in the word "Loch" for instance, like Loch Ness, though you can pronounce it as Lock, the most correct and native pronunciation of the word according to Gaelic, would be with this "ch" sound which in the phonetic alphabet is transcribed with an "x". So in short terms, "tha" is made like an "h" while "cha" is made by placing your tongue where you would pronounce a "k" and then doing a "h" type aspirated sound. Though hearing the distinction is tricky indeed giving their closeness in the mouth/throat.

@@bjornthorsson4921 this is incredibly well thought out. I seriously appreciate the effort you put in. I'll be sure to listen for the distinction there. Mile taing!
