I'm in this same situation! He's so unhappy without his outside time relative to other cats but just hangs around my yard to make sure he can get back in :p

We acquired Major Tom this way. First, we bought him an outside shelter, but he started venturing inside until, one day, he turned up limping and in obvious pain. The vet advised he was very old and had arthritis. Tom took his meds, ate, slept a lot inside, but always wanted to roam during the day. The old boy passed away quietly, being cuddled, at his last visit to the vets (he was not euthanised) aged, it was thought, around 23.

@@clogs4956 Major Tom! We had a stray turned inside cat that we named the same name! This is the first I've ever seen another cat with that name. He was a bit odd, but all of our cats are. I'm not sure what that says about us.

Yep. Unlike dogs, cats have never been domesticated and are still wild on their own. For us, as pets, they choose to be tame. Abuse/neglectthem, and if they can leave, they will, unlike dogs. i think that may be why a cat license is not required. Cats are so cool.

Cats just know. I’ve had my tuxedo for 12 years now. Back in 2022 I had a huge legal mess I ended up in. I was a mess but to his credit he just wouldn’t leave me alone. Stayed right there with me. Covid 19 wasn’t much better when I got it. He stayed right there with me. When it was at its worst he didn’t quit. I think he just knew he was going to be in the right place and time when I adopted him ( technically my step sister gave him to me but I’m very sure that he did adopt me xmas of 2012 when we first met)

Yeah, always be cautious when a "stray cat" shows up who is well fed and groomed. Chances are, it's just a friendly outdoor cat

@@Windmelodie There are nasty people who treat pets like throwaways. There was this black and white feline that used to come to my door, dirty, with burrs in his fur and hungry. I fed him, but he wouldn't come inside. After a few days, he brought me a dead mouse as a thank you gift. My friend noticed that he had a collar around his neck with the name of his vet, so I was told I had to call the vet and find out who owned this sad little feline. She said that she hadn't seen Sam for quite awhile and I reluctantly gave him back to his owner. Those people just tossed him out into the world like rubbish and I really didn't want to return the cat to that man. My instincts were right because they had the poor little guy euthanized because they couldn't get rid of his fleas, if you can believe that. I was so upset that my roommate said I could get my own cat at the Humane Society and it was the best decision I ever made. Julius had been there longer than any other animal and the staff were desperate to get him a loving home. He chose me by coming to the front of the cage and meowing a "hello, Mommy." That cat was so spiritual, loving and loyal and he stayed with me right up until his death. So, in esence, Sam died so I could save Julius.

She was chipped, so she definitely had an owner at some point.

Either they left her behind willingly or were forced to because they couldn't find her at the time of moving. Outdoor cats are hard to track (putting cameras on their collars is a bad idea since the collars can pop off the cat's neck in case they get stuck in a bush or something) and keeping up with their chip registry is very expensive nowadays. If the cat picks you, sure, but if they're chipped, gotta find the owner or it's considered stealing, regardless if the registry is expired or not. It's just the right thing to do but people are selfish. Pets are a luxury, not a necessity, and with how things are currently going many people are picking necessity.

I had a next door neighbor who left a cat behind without telling the neighbors. I eventually rescued her when she wandered into my yard. There was a Dodo video (posted twice) about this problem where an owner abandoned a cat. The message of the video is clear. If a person is moving, they almost always will know that weeks ahead of time. If a person can’t take their cat, plan ahead to save the cat with many possible options including; 1. Tell your friends and family and ask if any of them can take the cat. 2. Let the neighbors know either by going door to door or putting up a sign offering the cat for adoption. 3. Contact a local shelter and place the cat there. * Bottom line; don’t abandon your cat. It is part of your family. You owe them a good home.

I think it's awesome that they have those rules in your state. This story may not be as wholesome as everyone believes and she may have stolen someone else's beloved cat. Just because chip information wasn't renewed annually and she wasn't wearing a collar doesn't mean she didn't already have a loving home because I'm sure most people don't know you have to renew chip registration and many people don't put collars on their cats (I'm one of them).

I had no idea you had to renew. I thought you only change it if you move.
