Somehow Succession has become today's poster child for "quiet luxury" and the "old money" aesthetic. But anyone who paid attention to the show would know that Logan Roy was born poor and built his empire from nothing. First generation wealth. That is the definition of "new money."

Rich people with 'old money' don't tend to be flashy because they have no insecurity about wealth and nothing to prove. I've known very wealthy who think nothing of wearing shooting suits with holes in them.

Good to distinguish between old money and stealth wealth because Roy family was not old money. The man himself was new rich and the kids just the second generation.

It is true that films and TV shows will use clothing as a “language” to get across a certain feeling/vibe about a character. They have been doing this for a long time. A good costume designer will do this. Why he/she will need to know the scene. Is it a scene with tension? Comedy? Sadness? Violence? Etc. Also the color of that clothing plays a big part. Huge part. To help with the mood of that scene. Character.

You're right about the Scandinavian outfits not being too expensive... but they do carry legacy through brands. The Sweds are pretty proud of what they create and it shows

Showing no logos is the best thing. It’s opposite what the Chinese want. They are always wanting to show the logos so they can show off to their friends and family that they have some money. I lived in Asia and saw this constantly. I even saw one guy still wearing a stitched on temp logo of a suit on the outside of his jacket sleeve. I told him that it should be cut off he immediately said “NO”. That he wanted his friends and relatives to see that. To give everyone the impression that he had some money. Even though it looked odd to leave it on the jacket sleeve. That’s why I think most people buy these expensive pieces so they can then show off that designer label. It’s ALL about the label. The name. Crazy.

You could perceive the quality of the attire in almost every scene. The baseball cap thing is a bit weird, tho. Sadly they did not care much about the pens and stationery.

My own personal style has really evolved into the classic, yet rugged aesthetic when before it was a mess of streetwear and left of center elements

Great spotting! Although I disagree with what the 'old money' aesthetic stands for. I don't think it's about choosing what's the most expensive, but about willing to pay a lot for high-quality garments, cause that's the former definition of luxury garments. Succession's costume design is interesting tho.

I've not seen Succession, but I found the analysis linking elements of some of the characters' personal/professional life to the way they dressed particularly interesting. I have on the odd occasion found myself feeling intrigued by others' piece selections, wondering if there's a facet of their personality or backstory that's on show at that given time.

This is probably a dumb question, but is more expensive cashmere less itchy? I purchased a $120 cashmere sweater from Everlane in 2019 and I could barely stand to wear it. I even attempted wearing another blouse underneath it but my skin said "nope!" whenever the cashmere touched me, haha. I've had my eye on a couple Ralph Lauren cashmere pieces but am worried that I'll have the same reaction!

I think that high quality, well thought out and well fitting clothing is usually worth the money. No doubt about it. But at what point does a material turn from cotton to gold? lol

I mean there's a point to buying expensive clothes if you care about the quality and durability of the piece, but it's dumb to buy just for the looks when you can find very similar pieces that are way less expensive.

this "QUIET LUXURY" is such an idiotic term. The branded versions of all these brands are not even luxury by design. They use different quality fabrics and plant a huge logo for people to brag (aspirational market clients). LV or Dior have lines with literally no logo in sight. everybody talks abut Cucinelli, Zegna or Piana as this "quiet luxury" - but in fact most brands have exclusive lines or the haute couture - see Chanel. As for other brands such YSL, Celine, Hermes, Tom Ford, Bottega and so on have most of their products without a logo.

There’s a lot of wrong roads one can go down here. EG a Zegna blazer would not be better than a bespoke blazer for the same price or less in central london. Loro Piano is overpriced considering John Smedley and N Peal for light knitwear with heritage and quality.

…great insight on the Old Money aesthetic. Haven’t yet seen the series Succession but I luckily have been in the mix with these lot having been born and raised in Atherton, CA. Its influence on me has been significant yet since it is in the SF Bay Area, it isn’t as severe as in the East Coast. J. Crew, Club Monaco, RRL, Brooks Brothers, Banana Rep were some of the local staples. But the big difference is in the fit. I always take mine to our trusted tailor for a better fit. One I have inherited from my GrandMama. So find an excellent tailor near you, it’s worth it.

There is nothing really quite luxury about the Roys. They can spend $900 on Lanvin sneakers, buy a $2490 Ralph Lauren Sport Coat, live in a $60 million dollar apartment in Manhattan, and own multiple luxury homes in far-flung places in Europe, but the truth is that they do not have any long line of family wealth. That is why they feel the need to buy all these expensive clothes. I think this title is misleading and doesn't capture the way the Roys actually dress. They wear their wealth on their sleeves. Logan Roy married his first wife because of her relationship with royalty in England. He despises the Pierces and calls them "blue-blooded fucks" because they are the family that would look down on him. They still see him as the poor person scrounging around to find a few bucks in the mud. I think the real quiet luxury is not the Roy family at all. The quiet luxury set is truly the Pierce family. They have had generational wealth that goes back many generations. Their clothes are a reflection of that. While the Roys dress like they are going to board meetings or some hip billionaire tech mansion, they dress in relaxed clothing styles that are simple. They dress in simple outfits that aren't so pinned up and ostentations. They aren't the ones to wear their money on their sleeves. They have always had money and don't feel the need to spend $2k on a sports coat. They don't need to prove to anyone they can spend thousands on wardrobes. They are comfortable, and can comfortably walk away from the Roys' offer to merge with them. To them, it isn't a life-or-death decision like it was for Logan Roy. For them, their family will be just fine. Quite luxury is not the Roys buying $4k jackets, it is the Pierces spending money to gain two Ph.D.s or work at the Brookings Institute. The Pierces are just as evil as the Roys, as evidenced by how they treat their staff, and are outrageous gross snobs who look down on anybody who isn't them, but they are more quite luxury than the Roys ever were

Quiet luxury and stealth wealth ARE NOT the same thing. “Quite” luxury is repackaged minimalism and is accessible to a larger audience. Stealth wealth IS NOT accessible to a large audience. Stealth wealth is what very, very rich people use to downplay their wealth to the masses.

Ironically, men who know about true luxury would never buy Loro or Polo or Brunello. Instead, they would get a suit from, say, Huntsman, a coat from Liverano & Liverano, shirt from Ascot Chang, tie from E. Marinella, socks from Bresciani and shoes from John Lobb...all bespoke if available.

Why not just buy normal stuff instead of buying expensive sh*t that looks normal? Also it's incredibly sad to replicate these "looks" so you could be perceived as rich. I'm not saying people shouldn't buy nice things but to do it for others approval is just cringy.

This class of people have their own brands that we, working class people, do not even know they exist. These brands are toned down and not much advertised for the general public for the purpose of exclusively.
