Synopsis: Sujata (Nutan) gets adopted by the Chowdhury family, which consists of dad Upendranath (Tarun Bose); mom Charu (Sulochana Latkar); and a daughter, Rama (Shashikala), and is treated just like a daughter. Sujata grows up in this caring and nuturing household and leads a very comfortable life. Both Sujata and Rama are now of marriageable age. A young man, Adhir (Sunil Dutt), comes to the Chowdhury household with a view to marry. He meets Sujata and falls in love with her. When he informs his aunt (Lalita Pawar) of this decision, she is aghast, as she knows that Sujata is not only of a lower caste but also an untouchable, and she wants Adhir to marry Rama, or will not permit him to live with her. While at the Chowdhury household, Charu wants Sujata to leave the house immediately, as she will have nothing to do with her anymore. Will Adhir and Sujata be ever married or will they be two more victims to the caste system?

दिल को छू गई फिल्म...💕💕💕💕💕 काश! आज के समय में भी लोग इस बात को समझ पाते कि इंसान अपने कर्मों और संस्कारों से बडा होता है। ये जात - पात के चक्कर में आकर लोग भगवान की बनाई हुई रचना का कितना अपमान करते हैं। बहुत दुःख होता है ये देख कर...😥😥 😥😥😥 ये फिल्म हमारे समाज को आइना दिखाती है। फिल्म में सभी ने कमाल का अभिनय किया है। नूतन जी के अभिनय की तो जितनी तारीफ की जाए उतनी कम है।👏👏👏👏👏विमल दा जी का बहुत - बहुत धन्यवाद जो उन्होंने समाज के इतने गंभीर विषय पर इतनी खूबसूरत फिल्म बनाई। 🙏🙏🌷🌷

1959...आह! 9 साल का था, जब रेडियो सिलोन ,(जिसे बाद में श्रीलंका ब्राडकास्टिंग कारपोरेशन का नाम दिया गया ) पर इस प्यारी फ़िल्म के गीत गूंजा करते थे, और यह गीत आज भी मुझे विचारों की उन्हीं गालियों में थिरकने पर मजबूर कर देते हैं । सोचता हूँ, क्या मरने के बाद भी 1950 और 70 के दशकों के बीच की नायाब फिल्मों के लाजवाब गीतों जिन्हें मैं लोरियों का नाम देता हूँ, क्या इन सब की यादों को अपने साथ ले जा पाऊंगा ? काश मेरी यादों की बारात भी मेरे साथ चल पाती ।

I am a brahmin - I was told by my birth. Sujata told me I am a Human! Thank you for uploading the movie and watched it when I am in my fifties. No words but tears of Realism. Spell bound and lost. Never believed in any religion because living in New Zealand for 32 years and education already enlightened me before about this. The Movie just did a cherry on the top. Its 12.26am here and I do not know how to sleep tonight. So, sweet dreams to humanity. Gandhiji, Lord Budha, Swami Vivekanand never die and live after death in our thoughts and minds and will bestow upon us their divine teachings. Peace for Humanity.

आँखों से आंसू छलक आये । बहोत बहोत बहोत सुन्दर फिल्म है । जितनी भी तारीफ़ की जाए कम हीं होगी । बिमल रॉय जी की मास्टरपीस फिल्म। समाज को आईना दिखाती ये फिल्म । हमें सिख देती है की एक इंसान को दूसरे इंसानों की जात-पात, ऊँच-नीच कभी नहीं देखनी चाहिए । कोई इंसान अपने जाति या धर्म से नहीं बल्कि अपने संस्कारों और कर्मो से पहचाना जाता है । 20..... के दौर में कौन देख रहा है इस फिल्म को ??

This movie was really a blockbuster movie as it was continuously screened for 100 days in Mumbai. The theaters were not so small like today's. Bimal Roy celebrated the 100 days by a great firework on Shivaji Park. I was five years old then, but was taken to see the fire work.

Nutan is a tremendous actress, with a capacity to be a ravishing beauty, or a simple humble girl, not that these are necessarily mutually exclusive qualities. Looking at her as a sicial sophisticate in say, Anari, Dil Hi To Hai, Tere Ghar ke Samne, and her utter simplicity in Sujata and Bandini is amazing.

Late Nutan ji had done a lot of incredible female centric movies (in both mainstream commercial and parallel screen) like Sujata and Bandini that too at the time when no-one really cares much about giving women such pivotal roles. A legendary artist and one of the greatest of all time. 🌼 Always been a fan of her work. Rest in peace 🙏

ये फिल्म 72 में देखी थी जब मैं 11 साल का था तब इतनी समझ नहीं थी , आज इसे तकरीबन 52 साल बाद दुबारा देखा, देखते हुए कई बार आंखे नम हुई. इतने सालो बाद भी हालात कोई ज्यादा नहीं बदले.

Wow♥️ In love with the movie.... The acting, The Cinematography....so mesmerizingly done even in that era.. सच अब सुविधा होने के बावजूद इतनी ख़ूबसूरत फ़िल्में नहीं बनती और उस ज़माने में असुविधाओं में भी ऐसे masterpiece बनते थे ♥️🎉Kudos🙌

I have been fortunate to watch this film with English subtitles. Now subtitles do not work (for outside India?) Very disappointed! Surely you want to keep Indian culture vibrant in other countries, not just India. I actually learned some Hindi through watching these films. Please rectify. Thanks.

Without giving the English subtitles, it is mentioned Sujata 1959 B&W With Eng Subtitles. Please mention Sujata 1959 B&W. Please don't mislead the viewers.

यह फिल्म की सोच आज से 63 साल बाद पहले यानि 1959 की सोच के साथ विमल राय ने बनाई थी जिसमें संदेश साफ साफ दिया था कि इंसान केवल इंसान होता है, ना कोई ऊंचा ना कोई नीचा, भावनात्मक व्यवहार एक इंसान की ही होती है, जिसमें सभी कलाकारों ने अपने बेहतरीन अभिनय से हमें फिल्म देखने और रुलाने में मजबूर कर दिया, सच कहें तो हमें भी भावनात्मक रुप से इंसान बनने और सोचने पर की प्रश्नवाचक संभाल खड़े कर दिए हैं आज भी हम वहीं 2022 में आजादी के अमृत महोत्सव के 75 वे साल में खड़े हैं और हमने इतनी तरक्की के बाद भी और भी पीछे जाने के लिए लौट रहे हैं

निस्संदेह मूवी बहुत अच्छी है, पर दुख होता है देख कर के जब कन्या को ऊंचे तबके का दिखाना हो, हिरोइन को गोरा दर्शाया जाता है (जैसे पूरी फिल्म में शशिकला को गोरा दर्शाया गया है, पर scene 1:37:57 पर सांवला). आशा है के जैसे छूत अछूत खत्म हो गया है, गोरा काला भी खत्म हो जाए

what a direction; what an acting from Nutan; what a message conveyed from the movie! Especially, I was awestruck by the way Bimal Roy ji directed romantic clips between Sunil- Nutan, songs and music compatible to the clips and acting of Nutan at the same scenes.

Caste is merely one way of organizing a complex society. Every society needs some or other way of organization. Earlier caste was linked to the profession .A 21st century society is much complex than before. Secondly universalisation & internet has broken all barriers in education. The society has to help each individual discover & develop his own talent & provide a useful service to the rest of the society. Caste as rigid categorization will fall by the side.

Such a powerful movie. Bimal Roy made such beautiful movies in the hope of changing the mindset of people . Such noble thoughts but this class system is deeply entrenched in the minds of especially the older generation and most villagers. Thankfully the younger generation doesn’t care about caste,class,etc.

All of us had teary eyes watching such simple and hear-touching movie. Nutan acting was superb. One thing to notice is all family members were good at heart, but got swayed by societal pressure for a while.
