I grew up during this time, this footage is golden. In my mind these guys were gladiators! and Wide World of Sports provided unparalleled coverage. I miss those times badly. Although a few years ago Warren Johnson stopped to answer a question or two for me in the staging lanes. It was awesome... I still love the sport but its just not the same.

I once raced Prudhomme's The Snake NHRA AA/FC and beat it with my/our NHRA AA/FC. I/we sold it to Jim Liberman in 1974.

Loved Pro Stock.back then. Not the crap they have now.
@supertubr5 місяців тому
1970 was the first year for Pro Stock. Back when there was so much potential in stock factory horsepower, they literally had to call it something else.
@burningblue12545 місяців тому
@supertubr when stock.meant something. Now they look.like funny cars.

I was a pro stock fan also. So much so, that when I came back from Vietnam one of the first things I did was to purchase a brand new 1970 Plymouth Duster because I loved Sox & Martin's car.

Ah....the slingshots main enemy was clutch failures at this time and as catastrophic as Nicole's was, ironically it was the slingshot design that saved his life as being positioned between the two slicks cushioned his tumble's over the guard rail. R.I.P. Superman.....great video except sound engineers got things scewed up with the different class of cars. Don had a rough two years at Indy 69 and 70. Victorious both years but in 69 John Mulligan suffered a clutch explosions that caused shrapnel and a bolt to pierce the oil pan. The car didn't sever like Nicoll's but caused a catastrophic oil fire, he was behind a blow torch and burned severely enough that he died a few weeks later. He had set low E.T. in that run to I believe. It shook everyone to the core. Big accidently hit the kill switch in his car before the next run and McEwen abruptly dropped out to be at the hospital where they took Moe (Johns nickname). A beloved driver was gone. A clutch explosion also cost the life of Mike Sorokin at O.C.I R. a few years earlier. Just a kid at the time but I remember those days at the strip well amongst keeping up on the action with Drag News and numerous drag racing mags....great post and clear👍👍👍

Thanks for the commentary. 1969 was not a favorable year for the families of those lost for sure.. The 69 springnationals also had a fatality that Pat Foster was involved in.
@halseyknox3 дні тому
@@supertubrthat was Pat Foster in the red Mickey Thompson mustang funny involved with the ,"Ratty Kitty" funny car, a Chevy powered cougar. Can't think of the guys name but he was fatally injured....good call

My late wife and I saw Don Prudhomee and all the greats at New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire back in 1971 during the Grand Nationals. They also had the Chevy vs. Ford motorcycles.

courtesy Motortrend: Former Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock racer and race promoter Larry Huff died March 2, 2015. He was 73. Huff was best known for his Soapy Sales-sponsored Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars from the 1960s and the 1970s. His most memorable cars were the Soapy Sales Challenger and Duster Funny Cars in the 1970s, with Rich Guasco and Mike Fuller wrenching, and the likes of Steve Carbone, Dave Beebe, Pat Foster, Bill Dunlop and Richard Tharp doing the driving chores over the years.

My how far things have come, you can buy a Tesla Model S Plaid that would clean up in pro stock in those days. 11000 hp funny cars now vs 1500 hp then.
@supertubr2 місяці тому
Its more than just horsepower that keeps the old races appealing to certain fans. The cars back then were less safe, more volatile, harder to handle and requred more manual intervention. Those higher risk factors alone, plus the nostalgia, coupled with the fact that 1500 hp is still too much for the average motorist to handle, i would say modern day drag racing in the professional classes dont hold a candle to this old stuff.

I was at the winternationals 25 years ago and i was standing next to Don and said hi to him...he looked right past me. No recognition, no hi, nothing...i felt like a fool....he didnt have time for me.
@supertubr5 місяців тому
Dont feel bad, Ive had that happen to me at least 5 times in the mid 70's with Gordie Bonin, Terry Capp and later in the 80's with Dale Pulde. Truth is, when they do that, they are totally focused on one thing and thats what it takes to win. There are times for fans and not times for fans. It's nothing personal and I really believe that.

In 1979 at the winter nationals in Pomona Don just hit the guard R a I l and lost. My wife and I went to the pits to see the car. I asked D o n if he would take a picture with my wife So he put his arm around her and took the picture. Then another guy asked if he would take a picture with his wife, he just turned and walked Away to his car. I felt, Bad but my wife Looks like Farrah Fawcett. Exactly you can't tell them apart We still have the picture
