Surah/Quran Al-Isra (The Night Journey) (سورة الإسراء) - Beautiful Recitation That Soothes The Heart And Protects From Evil.
The title of the surah refers to the first verse which evokes the night journey made by the Prophet Mohammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him) from Mecca to the Al Aqsa Mosque (Al Isra wal Miraj). The 17th Surah of the Quran is also called Surah Banu Israil, the Children of Israel.
This sura is the fourth sura that requires prostration advised on the reading of the 107th verse. It is also the first of the seven suras which begin by glorifying Allah, "Glory to Him who by night caused His servant to be transported".
The surah addresses some legal precepts in Islam such as the prohibition to kill, the prohibition to violate the rights of orphans, the esteem of women as well as the laws of trade (no scams and no deception in products) , while setting out certain ethical values.
[Background of Surah Revelation]
Reading the first verse, we can deduce that the beginning of the surah was proclaimed on the occasion of the celestial ascension of the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him).
However, according to the hadiths reported by the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him), this event took place a year before the immigration of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of God be upon him) in Medina.
This suggests that this surah is one of the surahs proclaimed during the last phase of the prophecy of Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him) in Mecca.
[The theme of Sura The Night Journey]
The 17th Surah of the Quran is a marvelously balanced combination of exhortations, warnings and instructions. Indeed, Meccan polytheists have been sternly called upon to improve their conduct, citing the pitiful end of the Israelites. But still, according to scholars in Islam, the Israelites of Medina were also warned, as if to tell them,
it's your last chance don't behave like you did with Moses before".
The surah sets out the fundamental principles of civilization and the way of life of Muslims, like a manifesto of the Islamic state.
According to the hadiths of the prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him), it was during this nocturnal ascent that the 5 daily prayers were prescribed at very specific times.
