Few people know about the censorship battles that were fought around everyday Ukrainian children's books. For example, folk fairy tales could fall under the censorship ban. Only perfect [Soviet] pioneers were permitted to be protagonists in the books. However, authors and publishers still managed to circumvent censorship rules. The most popular Ukrainian children's book for half a century, Vsevolod Nestayko's trilogy "Toreadors from Vasyukivka", was published because the author added "Soviet ingredients”.
The documentary series "Between the Droplets" examines how the culture of Ukraine survived in the Soviet Union. In those dark times, a creative approach helped to circumvent and defeat censorship. Fortunately, not all pro-Ukrainian people were imprisoned in camps and mental institutions. In fact, there were many professionals working to study the rules of the game - and “between the droplets” - preserve Ukrainian culture.
