Mars 2020 AKA Perseverance arrived safely on Mars on Thursday afternoon and is in the process of transitioning to surface operations, preparing for years of exploration of Jezero crater - an ancient lake on Mars.
As of right now we're waiting for thousands of images to be downlinked from the descent and landing while the rover updates its software and deploys its instruments.
We're hoping for have some more substantial data on Monday.

I remember seeing an "artistic reenactment" animation (possibly a camera on a jig over a model terrain) of one of the Mars landers back in the 80s... at the time I thought it was real footage, and was amazed they got a little rocket powered flyer onto Mars. Later, when I grew up and searched for the footage, never found it, searching the old missions, saw it never happened, and was obviously just documentary images etc. So now they finally are doing real life flight on Mars, with video/photos is amazing!

If you went through this with Curiosity then some of the Press questions after landing were repeats from 2012 :). It's *impossible* to have enough images and videos for the media and public on landing day, yet most of those folks won't even look at the daily image dump a few weeks from now. Take a look at the Curiosity image archive; there are thousands of raw images that only a handful of the most dedicated eyeballs have even bothered to look at. As another commenter pointed out, we keep raising the bandwidth requirements of our rovers, but aren't really increasing the network bandwidth. HD video is painful to transfer from Mars and I can sympathize as I lived on a dial-up Internet connection from 1995 to 2021; until Starlink, there were zero broadband options at my home. With such slow, intermittent connections, you get it when you get it and priorities matter.

@extrastuff9463
@extrastuff9463 3 роки тому
@@zainiikhwan9405 Seems pretty daunting to me, in a hypothetical case for that to be re-usable you'd need a lot of infrastructure on or around Mars: 1. you'd want something roughly payload sized like it fits aerodynamically behind the rovers now (would limit/restrict future designs) 2. sky crane has to get back to orbit and attach itself to a new project 3. fuel for it has to be created there or brought along on the mission, refueling is yet another thing that can go wrong 4. a new heatshield needs to be brought in too, I wouldn't expect it to be viable after use and even if there's a chance good luck inspecting it and retrieving it to mars orbit 5. the quick fuel efficient route to Mars is only available for a limited time every few years (needs quick turnaround time), although I guess projects can be parked in Mars orbit for a while? It would take a lot to make that practically and financially viable, with our current frequency of Mars missions and how often there's an interval for quick trips to the place I don't think it's ideal. Doesn't seem viable to me unless there's some (semi-)automated or human inhabited funtional ground base on Mars somehow and ideally something in orbit as well, which their own even larger challenges.

It _is_ crazy, in a Rube Goldberg direction. I think airbags are crazy, but simple. In the 60's, if you had seen "Airbags in Your Steering Wheel!" on a Popular Science cover, you'd say "Oh great, another rotating piston engine, another Scissor-wing jet...". But "Dropping Planet Probes from Rocket-Packs!!"... no, the editors would squelch that. "That ain't gonna fly, c'mon..."

Amazingly, Perseverance’s RTG only generates 110 watts of power! Not enough to run a very good heater, unfortunately.
@KevinSmith-ys3mh
@KevinSmith-ys3mh 3 роки тому
Strictly speaking, the RTG is a constantly reliable heater, with electric benefits. It's constant 24/7 thermal & electric energy output makes a far superior power plant for Mars vs solar panels used before. That makes this generation of rovers immune to what killed the previous designs - long cold nights, dust storms, winter cold and frosts. The heat output alone is a huge functional life extension bonus, even if thermal junction generation has low efficiency, because heaters were a large part of previous rovers power budget and their final death blow. To Casey -for your problem, maybe an RTG's heat output could run an RV style heat absorption refrigerator, best case? Definitely not your home! 🙂

Thumbnail images are relayed first so they can the decide which images to download in higher resolution. The data stream is limited in time and speed . NASA is not "holding back" as stated but prioritizing the available bandwidth. The bandwidth is also needed for important data streams for initial system checks and later to upload the ground science roving package after offloading the EDL software.
