When you look at Cosworth and the technology there you get to realise why every Formula One team (bar Ferrari) build their engines in the UK. Most build their cars here as well. The UK has the skills and ingenuity. We just don't shout about it. That V12 is utterly exquisite!

So Cosworth are building the incredible T50 engine AND that Astons lump. And they were responsible for the engine in numerous fast Fords. And they also helped design Vauxhalls incredible C20XE Red Top (i used to own a Coscast GTE 16v) The T50 WILL be the greatest road car ever and the pinnacle of NA engine design. I LOVE the McLaren F1, my all time favourite car, but its so good that the T50 will be getting a British designed and built engine (and that engine is going to be so advanced and so light!) I can't wait to see a T50 being driven the way it should, hard.

Sweet engine. Visually, there are many shared details between this v12 engine, and the twin turbo v6 in the Acura/Honda NSX. The 2nd NSX engine is a joint venture between cosworth and Honda. Some of the shared technologies are the dry-sump oiling with an integrated bed plate (bed pan) with all of the main bearing journals machined out of one big piece of metal. Also the valve swing-arm cam followers are almost identical to the NSX V6, the only difference is the NSX has all 4 swing arms as an assembly, instead of just a pair on the v12.

What is the reason for the cavities on the underside of the intake section of the cylinder head? Is there a two stage intake or two stage injection? Or was it perhaps to allow better clearance for machining intake port geometries? You really have me interested :) Beautiful work!
@alphazuluz
@alphazuluz 2 роки тому
This is what I came to the comments to figure out! What the hell is that opening? I was thinking some sort of two stage intake, but you might be on to something with the idea of machining access. Maybe it gets blocked off somehow. Either way, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Actually, there's nothing too radical here that we can see, apart from the metallurgy and build quality. Old motorcyclists would recognise dry sumps, double valve springs and gear trains for the cams from the 1940s and 1950s. 4 valve heads were used by Rudge in the 1920s I think, and even Hillman Imps had slipper pistons. I can't quite understand the 'rocker' cam followers, but I'm sure there's a good reason. Anyway, I just know it's going to be an awesome car if Gordon's in charge.

Incredible, the dec height is so small, meaning the when the piston is a bottom dead centre it’s mostly within the diameter of the crankshaft, necessitating most of the piston sides are machined off, only having a very small crown and cylindrical aspect. This would normally result in piston slap, when cold. So possibly the engine has to be pre heated like F1, before it’s started, because the piston to wall clearance must be minimal?

I probably wouldn’t be asking the guy who builds them all the technical detail about the design of the bits, his expertise is getting the parts together repeatably and to a ridiculously high standard, making sure quality is good etc. he’ll be less involved in the ‘why’ of design choices and materials, coatings etc. Just ask him about the build, and then go and ask the engineer about the design.

The toyota 2zz-ge motor used in celica gts, lotus elise, matrix xr, Corolla S and some pontiac thing (vibe) from 2000- had metal matrix composite sleeves. It does help keep the weight down but it is also a huge pitfall of owning the engine. There are a few reasons we call it the glass engine and the metal matrix composite sleeves is one of them. The material is not so great in the long run.
