It seems, amazon stopped support for alexa gadgets on december 2021.. it would be really great, if somebody could tell me how to continue.

Hi, Can I use any gen of Alexa for this project? And Are there any limitations for use alexa commands or response?

Hi, here is the of supported Alexa devices: developer.amazon.com/en-US/docs/alexa/alexa-gadgets-toolkit/understand-alexa-gadgets-toolkit.html#devices Please note: Amazon has released this statement "On December 31, 2021, we paused support for third-party device makers working with Alexa Gadgets, while we work to create an even better developer and customer experience." Due to this we removed the Alexa Gadget sample in our latest SDK releases. If you want to test you'll have to use nRF Connect SDK v1.9.2: developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/1.9.2/nrf/index.html

What's the expected power consumption for this application?

We tested using an Echo Input, and the nRF Connect SDK sample on an nRF52840 DK. The Echo connects with a Bluetooth Low Energy connection interval of 7.5 ms, but increases this to 40 ms after the Handshake has completed. The following measurements are done at 40 ms connection interval, and with serial output on the sample being disabled (developer.nordicsemi.com/nRF_Connect_SDK/doc/latest/nrf/app_power_opt.html#disabling-serial-logging). Average current when connected, but no Directives or Events are receied/sent: ~105 uA. Average current when Alexa speaks and Speechmark Directives are continuously received: ~400 uA

Is there an NFC or RFID read feature in the echo hardwear?

We're not aware of any Echo device that supports these features.

Can I integrate with Alexa 4 Gen via BLE or Zigbee using a nRF52840 dongle?

Yes, you can use the Alexa as a hub for a Zigbee network with the nRF52840 Dongle, but we recommend using our DKs for development, as they are easier to do debugging on and interface with.

Hi, you mentioned the limitation that you cannot send an event outside a session. If I want to build a BLE push button (or doorbell) which triggers a skill, how can I do that? Is this even possible? Thanks!

Unfortunately a skill session cannot be triggered from the Gadget. The user needs to trigger it by speaking with Alexa, which means that use cases such as a doorbell is not currently possible within the Alexa Gadgets framework.

@@NordicSemi Thank you for your answer! I will try another solution like nrf -> rpi/esp32 bridge -> Alexa. But I'm not sure if this way will work or not.

@@adamhun994 You mean setting up a raspberry pi like described here? developer.amazon.com/en-US/docs/alexa/avs-device-sdk/raspberry-pi-script.html This might work as a proof-of-concept, but I'm not sure if it's suitable for an end product. There are other ways to connect to the Alexa ecosystem, but Nordic does not have any examples for this unfortunately. @@NordicSemi Not really, but I actually tried running AVS on a Pi a few years back. I have an Echo now and some wifi smart bulbs. I want to trigger them physically (with a button) and a battery powered nrf52 module would be the heart of this BLE push button. And I need a ble-wifi bridge which listens for the wake and signal of the nrf module and communicates the bulbs directly or maybe trigger Alexa routines somehow (via wifi?). When I first saw gadgets I thought I can skip this bridge and send BLE signal directly to my Echo, but I understand it's not possible.

@@adamhun994 Sadly we are not aware of any way of easily connecting an nRF52840 to the Echo directly. If you go with the Raspberry Pi route we suppose you may not need any AVS code running on the Pi, but have it talk to your own custom Alexa Skill. We are not an expert on Alexa Skills and don't know if there are inherent limitations here in the same way there is with Alexa Gadgets. Otherwise there are consumer products in the market now that may cover your need. There is the "Amazon Echo Button", and some others that may require an additional hub. If you have an ecosystem already, such as Hue, you might have the hub already and can add a button through this.
