It’s crazy how I first interpreted this song as the POV of a child growing up with an unstable parental figure. Just shows how her lyrics can touch so many souls

I have another interpretation for this song. This song in my opinion, talks to about two people, who were once in love. One started slipping beyond other's reach and the other, in their youth, feels guilty of leaving the person behind to move on for a better future. This idea mainly came from the second verse, where she says that the guy needed drugs more than her, which she couldn't watch so she left him behind and moved on. The drugs can be both literally or metaphorically, where she feels that either her priority in his life changed or he entered a phase she couldn't pull him out of. However, even decades from then, she still cant get over how she deserted him so she does anything to outrun that guilt. Thats why it would break her if he told her that he loved her, a love she doesn't feel worth of, seeing how she deserted him, when she saw him break apart. It wasnt anyone's fault, just two youth in love who were at the right place, wrong time and now simply wonder how the other is living their life without them.

I love how the tense and the perspective of the lyric “And I just watched it happen” changes 😢

I personally interpret this song as a person reminiscing on old friends they had in secondary school that they have drifted away from, but still follow on social media. The narrator watches their friend's life go by wondering what would have happened if something had changed. And while the narrator looks at their friend, the friend looks at the narrator thinking the same things. Ik it's probably not how the song was made to be interpreted, but I find it tragically beautiful

This song need to be getting a lot more attention. It’s a sleeper. It’s so freaking beautiful.

I hope Taylor can rest for awhile after her tour ends though she doesn't seem to rest very much. This album is sad and bleak and angry. Midnights was mostly sad, excepting "Bejeweled," It's been awhile since she sounded happy on an album. Fame and ambition are like a blinding light that draws you in, then burns you to a crisp. I used to dream of being a famous singer but now I realize I would never want her level of fame. There comes a point when it just seems to eat people alive.
